Abstract: Introduction: The urinary incontinence (UI) occurs among 30 and 60% of women during menopause. It generates a negative impact interfering in aspects such as physical, psychological and social women daily routine, affecting their quality of life. Considering these implications and, based on the consideration that every woman experience this problem in a unique way, an integrated approach is required, anchored in humanized precepts. Objective: To report the implementation of a women′s group focused in the health education, urinary incontinence prevention and treatment in a Basic Health Unit in the city of Porto Alegre. Description of the experience: The work was based in an open group dynamic, focused on achievement and learning of kinesiotherapeutic techniques to reeducate the pelvic floor function, along with the promotion of a support program to exchange urinary incontinence related information and experiences. The meetings were held weekly and divided into two parts: open dialogue and, after, the kinesiotherapy program. Conclusion: The activities encouraged the exchange of experiences and knowledge construction in the aspects related to UI. The group work showed to be viable and inexpensive, allowing easy access to information about UI to a greater number of women. The group implementation, with an interdisciplinary focus, contributed to expand the health vision in order to an integral and humanized assistance in urinary incontinence related aspects. BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders , 2011, DOI: 10.1186/1471-2474-12-133
Abstract: We screened http://ClinicalTrials.gov webcite, Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, PsycINFO and SCOPUS (through December 2010). (Quasi-) randomized controlled trials (CTs) comparing H/GI with controls were analyzed. Outcomes were pain, sleep, fatigue, depressed mood and health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Effects were summarized using standardized mean differences (SMD).Six CTs with 239 subjects with a median of 9 (range 7-12) H/GI-sessions were analysed. The median number of patients in the H/GI groups was 20 (range 8-26). Three studies performed follow-ups. H/GI reduced pain compared to controls at final treatment (SMD -1.17 [95% CI -2.21, -0.13]; p = 0.03). H/GI did not reduce limitations of HRQOL at final treatment (SMD -0.90 [95% CI -2.55, 0.76]; p = 0.29) compared to controls. Effect sizes on fatigue, sleep and depressed mood at final treatment and follow-up and on pain and HRQOL at follow-up were not calculated because of limited data available. The significant effect on pain at final treatment was associated with low methodological and low treatment quality.Further studies with better treatment quality and adequate methodological quality assessing all key domains of FMS are necessary to clarify the efficacy of H/GI in FMS.The key symptoms of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) are chronic widespread pain, fatigue (physical exhaustion and cognitive disturbances) and non-restorative sleep [1]. Besides these symptoms global multidimensional function ( = health related quality of life [HRQOL]) and tenderness are regarded to be the key domains of therapeutic trials in FMS [2].Patients with FMS use a lot of pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies resulting in high costs of health services [3]. Pharmacological and physical therapies are more frequently used than psychological treatments. Although hypnotic pain relief is among the oldest treatments for pain, interest in hypnotic treatments for chronic pain appears to rise only in the last decade [4]. In an internet sur
Short Note: A new still for the prevention of mercury poisoning in small-scale gold mining by amalgam extraction
J. M. Pinzón,R. Contreras,C. Bernardy
Geofísica internacional , 2003,
Abstract: A system for the recovery of mercury in small-scale gold mining in Colombia has been designed and tested. Distillation of up to 300 g of gold amalgam takes ten to 20 minutes, and more than 90% of the mercury formerly lost in the atmosphere is recovered for recycling. The equipment pays for itself and may be locally built using available materials. It has been widely accepted by miners because of the improved safety to miners and their families. The furnace can be fueled either with gasoline or LP gas. It may also be used for smelting small amounts of gold, thus getting rid of the sponginess which detracts from marketability. The new system is popular in Colombia because of the improved safety to mine operators.

Abstract: A region has phenomena that are individuals in function of his territorial, space, cultural, social and economical configuration. In this context, this research was focused on analyzing the demographic variation, of the twenty counties that make part of the Association of the Counties of the West of Santa Catarina (Amosc), in the period from 1991 to 2010, on basis of the data of the demographic censuses, of the IBGE and his impacts in the municipal development. Also, there were analysed the rates and variations of the rural, urban, and total population espatialized through thematic maps. As results, was observed that the population variations were expressive, both negative and positive, which shows that the Amosc has a tendency to decrease (depletion of peripheral counties) and concentration (in medium-sized city like Chapecó and next to the road). The knowledges of this research guide to public strategic policies aimed to the economic and social development of their respective municipalities, with different configurations regarding the mobility of their populations.
Guest Editorial: 2010 VA/DOD Clinical Practice Guideline for Management of Post-Traumatic Stress: How busy clinicians can best adopt updated recommendations

Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Development , 2012,
Abstract: The continued wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have brought an increased focus on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and have made PTSD a part of a national conversation. Since the first edition of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)/Department of Defense (DOD) Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) for PTSD was issued in 2004 at the beginning of these conflicts, more than 750,000 returning new Veterans have sought mental health care in the VA. It is anticipated that this number will climb dramatically as more than 1 million Veterans will leave the military in the next 5 years. This makes it all the more important that VA and DOD healthcare providers have clear guidance on best management practices for PTSD and an understanding of how they can best use the revised VA/DOD Clinical Practice Guideline for Management of Post-Traumatic Stress issued in the fall of 2010. As coeditors, our goal with the production of this special issue of JRRD is to publish a series of articles that go beyond the recommendations in the new CPG by providing, in addition to a comprehensive overview of the latest scientific evidence, practical guidance for busy clinicians who wish to adopt the CPG recommendations within their various clinical settings.

International Journal on Working Conditions , 2012,
