Abstract: evaluating learning is one of the aspects that require deeper modifications within the changes and transformations universities should be aware of in order to improve their educational process. since it is practiced by teachers through tests as the only information measuring element the student receives. a diagnose to determine current evaluative practices used by teachers to establish student performance was performed. the sample was made up out of 211 professors from different faculties at the university of los andes. a questionnaire was used for collecting information. from the diagnose, some considerations were generated supporting the final reflections in order to contribute to the student’s integral education; with the purpose of facing the challenges forced by the new millennium before globalization and the knowledge society.

Abstract: we present an evaluation of the image of the university of los andes with respect to the admission processes for undergraduate students in different majors. the evaluation is carried out taking into account the opinion of two types of population: the students at this university and the general public. we inquire about the level of acceptance of different policies related to admittance into this university and on the transparency and reliability of the administration of the admission instruments. also, we classify the level of the image of the different admission processes in each faculty on the mérida campus at the university of los andes.

Abstract: following nietzsche’s ideas, it can be stated that when facing education and schooling three attitudes corresponding to classifying author-described nihilism types can be assumed. on one hand, denying education and schooling’s crisis in modern times is acceptable, what is more, defending “old schooling principles and values” without recognizing such attitude (implicit nihilism). on the other hand, it is possible to assume a crisis-recognition attitude, but forsaking looking for an alternative (passive implicit nihilism). finally, the third choice, the active explicit nihilist one showed when being able to transform the “old schooling principles and values” for “new ones” by building new interpretations for education and schooling.

Abstract: this research tries to determine studentship acceptance on different policies related to the change in the study program in the systems engineering major, at the university of los andes, and its related transition regime. results show acceptance and rejection to different policies, and show dependency of students’ location in their careers and their major of choice. demand distribution of the three majors offered in this career after the curricular change is in progress is also determined.

Abstract: this article proposes a strategy for verifying the randomness of the distribution of right choices in the admission tests of universidad de los andes. this strategy is based on applying a set of statistic tests over the right answers sheet before each admission test is applied. for verifying the quality of this strategy, it is applied over five answers sheets of tests that were recently applied, as well as in simulated pseudo-random and random tests. results show, on one hand, that the strategy is valid and convenient, on the other hand, that some of the admission tests in universidad de los andes do not satisfy randomness criteria.

Abstract: a first follow-up is done three years after a first evaluation of the university of los andes?s image in relation to its admission processes for students in its several undergraduate programs. the evaluation is done taking into consideration the opinion of two population types: the university?s students and the general public. the acceptance level of some of its policies related to admission in this university is investigated and the transparency and reliability of the administration of the of the admission instruments. just as well, the image level of the admission processes of each faculty in the university of los andes?s mérida campus is classified.

Abstract: the validity of the new constitution and election of new state authorities should lead to the definitive closure of a long period of political instability in ecuador. the strong support received by president correa during his administration and his reelection in the first round could be interpreted as positive signs for achieving those goals. however, three aspects appear to be obstacles to the fully establishment of a new order able to ensure good govenance and stability, in a context where progress has been made as to popular representation and participation. first, the permanence of negative aspects of institutional design that were not made part of the constitutional reform. second, hegemonic leadership by the president, which serves as an obstacle to the institutionalization of the process. third, the notion of the process as a revolution, which encourages polarization and feeds a game of absolute winners and losers.

Abstract: denis diderot?s and edmund burke?s ideas on what beauty is exemplify the dispute of subjectivity that took place during the 18th century in europe, when the arrival of aesthetics determined the ultimate separation of the semantically related concepts of beautiful and good. their philosophical research on beauty showed some common points that will be exposed briefly. it is striking to find a classical view in a revolutionary thinker like diderot, and a speculative character in the aesthetics of a conservative like burke; these last, according to some specialists, have given him more recognition than his keen and insightful political statements.

Abstract: there have been recollected in this paper some observations related to the referential nature of symbolism, according to cassirer and gadamer?s considerations. the issue is to determine if abstraction takes off art?s mimetic character and, therefore, its symbolic nature; in view of that the symbol has being assumed sometimes as an indicator of the known world.

Abstract: El presente artículo busca explicaciones para los derrocamientos de tres presidentes ecuatorianos, que han marcado los puntos culminantes de una década de inestabilidad. Lo hace indagando en el campo de las movilizaciones sociales que precedieron a cada uno de esos hechos, con especial referencia a su composición social y a los objetivos de sus integrantes. En la parte final se proponen algunas hipótesis acerca de la movilización en contra del gobierno de Gutiérrez. Sugiere que no son válidas las explicaciones de racismo y de temor clasista. Enlaza la explicación al surgimiento de reivindicaciones democráticas originadas tanto en los bajos rendimientos del sistema político como en el carácter dictatorial que iba tomando el último gobierno.
