Occupational stress and work capacity of nurses of a hospital group

Abstract: the study aimed to evaluate the relationship between occupational stress and the work capacity index of 368 nurses (82.1% of the population) of a hospital group. a questionnaire with socio-occupational questions was used as well as two scales: the job stress scale and the work capacity index. the group of nurses was predominantly female (93.2%), worked in care activities (63.9%), had undertaken at least one postgraduate course (76%) and were satisfied with the unit where they worked (70.5%). occupational stress was present in 23.6% of the nurses, of these 15.2% presented high strain work and 8.4% passive work. social support exercised a significant positive influence on all groups - exposed or not to occupational stress. regarding the work capacity, this was moderate (28-36 points) for 51.4% of the nurses and good (37-43 points) for 47.4%. there was no correlation between stress and work capacity.
Estratégias de enfrentamento do adoecimento: um estudo sobre o trabalho da enfermagem

Abstract: objective: to identify the strategies that nursing staff from an emergency department use to prevent illnesses. methods: a descriptive qualitative study was used to collect data from nursing staff working in a major public hospital in rio grande do sul, brazil. data collection involved the retrieval of information from documents of the institution, observations of nursing work dynamics, and semi-structured interviews. the data were analyzed through content analysis. results: the findings suggest that the nursing staff faces harmful health conditions in the work environment. nursing staff showed indifference toward death, coldness toward patients' needs in the overcrowded waiting room areas, and undesirable attitudes and humor in the work environment. conclusion: the nursing staff behaviors suggest protective strategies, which warrant the development of interventions that address those behaviors and that promote health in the nursing work environment.

Abstract: this study approached the workplace of nursing workers who work in embracement with risk classification in a public emergency service in porto alegre, rio grande do sul, with the objective of learning their experiences about this technology for the emergency care. it is a qualitative research that utilized as information source institutional records, attendance scenes that were observed and registered in a diary field, and semi-structured interviews with the nursing professionals. the information was submitted to content analysis and the results reveal the characteristics of the service and the feelings of the nursing staff that point out the presence of pain at the work when perceiving that their speech is "empty" and void of meaning. the findings evidence the need of giving attention to the workers in order to protect them from sickness deriving from the suffering experience in the work and invite them to comanagement of this technology.

Abstract: a descriptive case study carried out with nurses. its main purpose is getting to know the physical and administrative structure of the hospitals in this area, as well as their averal policy regarding the nurses' action in the prevention ans control of hospital infection. twenty-eight nurses participated . data was collected through the observation of the physical area of the hospitals, the reading of the evaluation and inspection documents from the health surveillance department from the 12th crs and through interviews conducted with the nurses. final analysis showed the need of a deep reassessment of the daily actions for the prevention and control of hospital infections in these hospitals so as to promote health, reduce the hazards to inpatients and guarantee safety for both health professionals and patients.

Abstract: this experience report describes the humanized support given by the nurse in the attendance to patients in eminently critical health situation in the emergency hospital of porto alegre (brasil). the proposal was based on jean watson theory. the experience gave moments for personal and professional self-knowledge, and thoughts concerning the possibilities of construction of interpersonal humanist process in the emergency environment as well. yet, it was possible to identify some limitations of the theory options referent to its practical applicability.

Abstract: this paper describes a teaching experience aimed at providing interactivity to the technique of field diary by using a virtual learning environment. the educational proposal derives from the federal university of rio grande do sul (ufrgs)'s teaching training program of the stricto sensu post-graduation program in nursing, in which the author, a master's degree candidate, oriented by her advisor, proposed forming virtual discussion groups in order to write the field diary for an undergraduate discipline in nursing, with the aim of providing an opportunity for a joint discussion of academic experiences in the realm of practice. the instructors of the discipline in which the proposal was developed also participated in the activities. the virtual technology gave new dynamism to the technique of field diary, making possible an exchange of experiences among the students, the instructor and the author, as well as moments of reflection and discussion regarding the themes faced in the nursing practice.
Work under urgency and emergency and its relation with the health of nursing professionals

Abstract: the study aimed at understanding work under urgent and emergency conditions and its connection with the health of nursing professionals, who work at an urgency and emergency state service. descriptive qualitative case study carried out at a state service in porto alegre, rs. the collection of data included the analysis of documents from the institution, the observation of the work dynamics, and the performance of semi-structured interviews with the nursing professionals. the data were submitted to content analysis. one could understand that the health of the nursing professionals is constituted from a working dynamics which is sometimes harmful because it results from an organizational context that carries marks of a state health system with many gaps, however, that allows the meaning of work to be an essential element for the ability to keep the balance and not getting sick in view of the work demands.

Abstract: the objective of this study is to identify occupational factors associated with the three components of burnout syndrome among nursing workers who work in hospital care. it is a cross-sectional study carried out in a hospital located in the serra gaucha, rs, brazil. analytical statistics were applied to a sample of 164 nursing personnel. the results indicate that burnout syndrome components showed statistically significant associations (p<0.05) with the following occupational characteristics: work overload, lack of work motivation, conflicts of personal versus institutional values, lack of opportunity for reward, having the same task in different institutions, and the difficulty in conciliating different jobs. we conclude that maintaining adverse work conditions generates stress, forcing the employee to develop adaptive mechanisms which sometimes are not effective. together, these factors lead to the development of burnout syndrome.
