N-derivations for finitely generated graded Lie algebras

Abstract: $N$-derivation is the natural generalization of derivation and triple derivation. Let ${\cal L}$ be a finitely generated Lie algebra graded by a finite dimensional Cartan subalgebra. In this paper, a sufficient condition for Lie $N$-derivation algebra of ${\cal L}$ coinciding with Lie derivation algebra of ${\cal L}$ is given. As applications, any $N$-derivation of Schr\"{o}dinger-Virasoro algebra, generalized Witt algebras, Kac-Moody algebras and their Borel subalgebras, is a derivation.
Immobilization of Cross-Linked Phenylalanine Ammonia Lyase Aggregates in Microporous Silica Gel

Abstract: A separable and highly-stable enzyme system was developed by adsorption of phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) from Rhodotorula glutinis in amino-functionalized macroporous silica gel and subsequent enzyme crosslinking. This resulted in the formation of cross-linked enzyme aggregates (PAL-CLEAs) into macroporous silica gel (MSG-CLEAs). The effect of adsorptive conditions, type of aggregating agent, its concentration as well as that of cross-linking agent was studied. MSG-CLEAs production was most effective using ammonium sulfate (40%-saturation), followed by cross-linking for 1 h with 1.5% (v/v) glutaraldehyde. The resulting MSG-CLEAs extended the optimal temperature and pH range compared to free PAL and PAL-CLEAs. Moreover, MSG-CLEAs exhibited the excellent stability of the enzyme against various deactivating conditions such as temperature and denaturants, and showed higher storage stability compared to the free PAL and the conventional PAL-CLEAs. Such as, after 6 h incubation at 60°C, the MSG-CLEAs still retained more than 47% of the initial activity whereas PAL-CLEAs only retained 7% of the initial activity. Especially, the MSG-CLEAs exhibited good reusability due to its suitable size and active properties. These results indicated that PAL-CLEAs on MSG might be used as a feasible and efficient solution for improving properties of immobilized enzyme in industrial application.
Finger-vein image recognition combining modified hausdorff distance with minutiae feature matching  [PDF]

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a novel method for finger-vein recognition. We extract the features of the vein patterns for recognition. Then, the minutiae features included bifurcation points and ending points are extracted from these vein patterns. These feature points are used as a geometric representation of the vein patterns shape. Finally, the modified Hausdorff distance algorithm is provided to evaluate the identifica-tion ability among all possible relative positions of the vein patterns shape. This algorithm has been widely used for comparing point sets or edge maps since it does not require point cor-respondence. Experimental results show these minutiae feature points can be used to perform personal verification tasks as a geometric rep-resentation of the vein patterns shape. Fur-thermore, in this developed method. we can achieve robust image matching under different lighting conditions.

Abstract: Using the generalized Ginzburg-Landau-Devonshire theory, the characteristics of phase transformation of a ferroelectric thin film with surface layers are investigated. We study the effect of the surface layer on the properties (coercive field, critical thickness) of a ferroelectric thin film. Our theoretical results show that the surface layer is likely to answer for the emergence of phase transformation.

Speed up linear scan in high-dimensions by sorting one-dimensional projections

Abstract: High-dimensional indexing is a pervasive challenge faced in multimedia retrieval. Existing indexing methods applying linear scan strategy, such as VA-file and its variations, are still efficient when the dimensionality is high. In this paper, we propose a new access idea implemented on linear scan based methods to speed up the nearest-neighbor queries. The idea is to map high-dimensional points into two kinds of one-dimensional values using projection and distance computation. The projection values on the line determined by the first Principal Component are sorted and indexed using a B+-tree, and the distances of each point to a reference point are also embedded into leaf node of the B+-tree. When performing nearest neighbor search, the Partial Distortion Searching and triangular inequality are employed to prune search space. In the new search algorithm, only a small portion of data points need to be linearly accessed by computing the bounded distance on the one-dimensional line, which can reduce the I/O and processor time dramatically. Experiment results on large image databases show that the new access method provides a faster search speed than existing high-dimensional index methods.

Abstract: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder strongly associated with hepatic glucose intolerance and insulin resistance. The trefoil peptides are a family of small regulatory proteins and Tff3 is widely expressed in multiple tissues including liver. But the roles of Tff3 in regulation of glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity in liver remain unclear. Here we show that the hepatic Tff3 expression levels were decreased in ob/ob and high-fat diet-induced obese mice. Overexpression of Tff3 in primary mouse hepatocytes inhibited the expression of gluconeogenic genes, including G6pc, PEPCK and PGC-1α, subsequently decreasing cellular glucose output. GTT and ITT experiments revealed that adenovirus-mediated overexpression of Tff3 in diabetic or obese mice improved glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity. Collectively, our results indicated that Tff3 peptides are involved in glucose homeostasis and insulin sensitivity, providing a promising peptide on new therapies against the metabolic disorders associated with T2DM.

Abstract: The direct asymmetric three-component reaction of an aromatic (or cinnamic) aldehyde, an amine and a phosphite was investigated by employing chiral Br nsted acid. In general, modest to good enantioselectivities (31%–87% ee) could be obtained in acceptable isolated yields (61%–91%) for a series of substrates.
