Cystic Fibrosis: Brazilian ENT Experience
Tania Sih,Ricardo Godinho,Leticia Paiva Franco,Otávio Piltcher
International Journal of Otolaryngology , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/204696
Abstract: Most published studies about Cystic Fibrosis (CF) are European or North American. There are still few publications about the characteristics of fibrocystic populations in developing countries. The incidence of cystic fibrosis (CF) in Brazil varies among different regions (1 : 10,000 in Minas Gerais, 1 : 9,500 in Paraná, 1 : 8,700 in Santa Catarina, and 1 : 1600 in Rio Grande do Sul). The prevalence of the DF508 mutation also varies according to population: 33% in Sao Paulo, 49% in Rio Grande do Sul, 27% in Santa Catarina, and 52% in Minas Gerais. Cough and nasal obstruction are the most common symptoms. The variation in nasal polyposis prevalence may be explained by population genotypic characteristics in a country that spans a continent. Findings on nasal endoscopy and computed tomography (CT) have better correlation than do this information compared with surgical and clinical history. Microbiologic studies suggest a high level of early contamination of the airways. Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) occurs in these patients as a result of ototoxic antibiotics. The data compiled in this paper is useful, but also lead to the general agreement that more research would be welcome due to the unique characteristics of this country.

Introduction Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common inherited autosomal recessive disease among Caucasians [1–6]. It has a frequency of 1?:?2.000 to 1?:?6.000 in the Caucasian population of developed countries [1, 3, 4, 6–9], being rare in populations with African (1?:?30.000) and Asian (1?:?90.000) origins [10, 11]. In Brazil, the incidence is 1?:?9.500 in Paraná [12] and 1?:?8.700 in Santa Catarina [13] and 1?:?10.000 in Minas Gerais [14]. The disease is caused by mutations in the gene encoding the cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator protein (CFTR), mapped in the human chromosome at 7q31. This gene, described in 1989 [15–17], encodes a protein that acts as a chloride channel, and its dysfunction results in an abnormal transport of sodium and chloride through the apical membrane of epithelial cells of the upper aerodigestive tract and exocrine glands. Abnormal flow of salt and water leads to dehydration of fluids of the exocrine glands and a change in the viscoelastic properties of mucins [5, 6, 18, 19]. Changing the composition and viscosity of mucus leads to dysfunctional mucociliary clearance and to obstruction of the paranasal sinus ostia, predisposing to local inflammation with consequent hypoxia and increased partial pressure of carbon dioxide. This results in mucosal edema and greater compromising of ciliary

Understanding digital natives' learning experiences
Franco, Claudio de Paiva;
Revista Brasileira de Linguística Aplicada , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1984-63982013005000001
Abstract: this paper aims to provide a better understanding of digital natives' perspectives on english learning. the present case study analyzes data from a group of brazilian learners of english who study at a federal, public high school in rio de janeiro, brazil. data collection includes: (a) a questionnaire to examine the profile of the participants and (b) learner narratives. this study privileges an interpretive approach based on complexity theory in an attempt to understand participants' learning experiences from a more holistic, whole-systems approach. results indicate that the complex adaptive learning system of digital natives is self-organizing and chaotic. moreover, the final remarks stress a pressing concern regarding english teaching in brazil and suggest that the current pedagogical practices no longer serve the needs of the digital generation.

USING WIKI-BASED PEER-CORRECTION TO DEVELOP WRITING SKILLS OF BRAZILIAN EFL LEARNERS
Claudio de Paiva FRANCO
Novitas-ROYAL , 2008,
Abstract: This paper focuses on a creative way of enabling learners to profit from writing, which is peer-correction through wikis. Learners are empowered with technological tools as a means of promoting a student-centred approach, which contributes to their being less dependent of the teacher, fostering an autonomous learning. Data was collected and analyzed by means of qualitative and quantitative methods. The aim of these analyses is primarily to determine whether students’ writing skill will be improved if collaborative learning strategies are applied into the digital context, namely through wikis. Findings show that an increasing interest in belonging to an online community emerges from students altogether with higher degrees of motivation. Apart from maximizing opportunities related to writing, learners accurately developed their social skills in the sense that they cooperated instead of competing. The results also suggest that wikis provide learners with many benefits in developing their writing skills.

Abstract: this work estimates the import substitution process in brazilian industrial sectors in a recent period and evaluates whether it is occurring naturally or is in part induced by some kind of external commercial policy. an index to measure import substitution was calculated for forty nine sectors of industry. a regression analysis with this index against effective tariffs and real effective exchange rate, during the period 1995-2000, shows that these variables (effective tariffs and real effective exchange rates) did affect the substitution index. from 1999 on, the influence of the exchange rate over the import substitution index was greater than the influence of the effective tariff, suggesting that the process of import substitution post the brazilian currency depreciation occurred in 1999 contains elements that characterizes it as a "natural" process.

As folhas apresentam epiderme uniestratificada e mesofilo dorsiventral. Em folhas oriundas do cultivo in vitro, a cutícula e o esclerênquima s o ausentes. Considering the importance of knowledge of anatomical structures in the protocol definition for the micropropagation of the ipê-branco, this study compared the in vitro and ex vitro internal structure of leaves. For anatomical evaluations, the first leaf in vitro with 30 days of growth and adult plants were used. The anatomical study of leaves was based on microscope examination from cross-sectional and paradermic sections from the leaf blade. The leaf structures from plants ex vitro show uniseriate skin, and mesophyll with dorsiventral organization. They are hipostomatics and trichome is present in all faces. Leaves ex vitro was thicker that culture in vitro in limb, central nervure, epidermis and palisade and spongious parenchyma. In leaves in vitro, cuticle and sclerenchyma are absent. Leaves of ex vitro presented minor numbers of stomata and greater number of trichromes when compared with culture in vitro. Stomata of in vitro are larger than stomata ex vitro.
