Advances in Anthropology (AA) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/aa.2015.53015
Abstract: This study presents a compilation of results obtained by several research groups on the mutational analysis of β thalassemia in Portugal and in Morocco, and compares the mutation/haplotype associations in both countries. We use the β thal mutations and haplotypes as genetic markers to address the question of gene flows through the Mediterranean basin area into the Iberian Peninsula and Portugal since the Phoenician trade up to recent times.

Advances in Physical Education (APE) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ape.2014.41004

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the anaerobic power of amateur futsal and handball players utilizing the Wingate Test. Material and Methods: Twenty-two athletes between the ages of 18 to 21, who agreed to participate in the research after reading and signing the Terms of Free and Clarified Consent, took part in the Wingate Test using 7.5% of their total body mass. The relative and absolute Maximum Power (MP); relative and absolute Average Power (Ap) and Fatigue Rate (FR) were compared. The statistical method used was the non-paired t-student test with a significance level of P < 5%. Results: Handball players presented higher values of absolute MP (879.45 ± 182.22 W) and Ap (671.91 ± 109.37) when compared to the values of MP (749.00 ± 71.94) and Ap (600.42 ± 52.72) of futsal players. However, there was no significant difference when the variables studied were relative to the MP and Ap and Fatigue Rate. Conclusions: Based on these results, it can be concluded that handball presents greater alactic anaerobic power compared to futsal where, most likely, the importance of certain characteristics and specific training contributes to the determination of the predominant metabolic medium during sport practice.

Abstract: in tropical forests, the environmental heterogeneity can provide niche partitioning at local scales and determine the diversity and plant species distribution. thus, this study aimed to investigate the variations of tree species structure and distribution in response to relief and soil profile features in a portion of the largest remnant of brazilian atlantic rain forest. all trees 3 5 cm diameter at breast height were recorded in two 0.99 ha plots. topographic survey and a soil characterization were accomplished in both plots. topsoil samples (0-20 cm) were taken from 88 quadrats and analyzed for chemical and particle size properties. differences for both diversity and tree density were identified among three kinds of soils. a canonical correspondence analysis (cca) indicated that the specific abundance varied among the three kinds of soils mapped: a shallow udept - orthent / aquent gradient, probably due to differences in soil drainage. nutrient content was less likely to affect tree species composition and distribution than relief, ph, al3+, and soil texture. some species were randomly distributed and did not show restriction to relief and soil properties. however, preferences in niche occupation detected in this study, derived from the catenary environments found, rise up as an important explanation for the high tree species diversity in tropical forests.
Life Values Inventory (LVI): Um estudo com mulheres portuguesas
Análise Psicológica , 2005,
Abstract: the present article focus on the evaluation of the values, central psychological dimension in the career development, namely with the presentation of the life values inventory, a new instrument which the original version was developed at the usa by crace and brown (1996). the portuguese adaptation of the life values inventory, were administered to 209 adult females belonging to different social-occupational groups. following a summary of the bibliography?s revision about the importance of the values in the career development in women, it is presented the analysis of the scores obtained with the life values inventory: means and standard deviations; internal consistence coefficients, by the l?alpha of cronbach method; factor analysis and groups differences analysis defined by occupational groups.

Abstract: it has been reported the existence of an association between chronic viral hepatitis c and type 2 diabetes mellitus, probably as a manifestation of the chronic hepatic disease and/or one of its extra-hepatic manifestations. recently, it has been reported the appearance of type 1 diabetes mellitus after treatment with interferon-alpha, associated with the appearance of anti-pancreatic antibodies or with an increase in their titration. we pretend to illustrate a severe case of new-onset type 1 diabetes mellitus, 5 months after combined treatment with interferon-alpha and ribavirin. our objective is to enhance the importance of evaluate the risk of developing diabetes mellitus with the treatment.

Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982007000300012
Abstract: the objective of this trial was to evaluate the effect of weaning age on growth and carcass characteristics of calves from primiparous bos indicus x bos taurus crossbred cows. heifers were divided in two groups according to the order of access to pasture and rotationally grazed pastures of ryegrass (lolium multiflorum lam) and arrowleaf clover (trifolium vesiculosum cv. yuchi) from weaning until their first mating season (two winter/spring seasons); animals were then transferred to native pasture in the following summer-autumn season. calves were randomly assigned, according to breed and heifers grazing group order, to one of two weaning ages: early weaning (ew) - 07 calves weaned at 70 days of age with an average body weight of 83.2 kg or conventional weaning (cw) -10 calves weaned at 180 days of age and with an average body weight of 152.0 kg in a completely randomized design. steers were slaughtered with two years of age. heifers grazing group did not affect calves performance. calves in the cw treatment were heavier (202.1 kg) at one year old than those on ew (183.0 kg), but no significant difference was observed when animals were slaughtered at two years of age (cw=408.5 kg vs. ew=411.2 kg). carcass traits such as fat thickness, conformation, "hilton quote" classification, and hot yield did not differ comparing ew with cw steers. therefore, early weaning did not affect performance and carcass characteristics of steers slaughtered at two years of age.

Angiologia e Cirurgia Vascular , 2012,
Abstract: renal artery aneurysms (raa) are rare, frequently asymptomatic, with variable etiology, frequently due to atherosclerosis and congenital anomalies. surgical treatment is indicated for raa with a diameter greater to 2 cm. surgical technique will depend on raa anatomic localization and complexity, as well as, predicted renal isquemic time. the authors report an auto-transplant for treatment of two complex raa.

Costa, Mirian Cristina Gomes;Almeida, Eurileny Lucas de;Ferreira, Tiago Osório;Oliveira, Daniel Pontes de;Romero, Ricardo Espíndola;
Revista Ciência Agron?mica , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1806-66902011000300001
Abstract: the aim of this research was to verify whether soil depth affects aspects of mineral nutrition and yield potential of irrigated banana plantations. the study was carried out at apodi plateau (ce), brazil, in an area characterized by soil depth variations. the treatments were sites in different microrelief classes (concave, convex and retilinea) with four different soil depths: a) 0.92 m; b) 0.77 m; c) 0.6 5m; d) 0.52 m. the following measures were done: high of mother plant (apm), high of daughter plant (apf), pseudosterm diameter of mother plant (dppm), weight of fresh (mff) and dry leaves (mfs), contents of phosphorus (p), potassium (k), calcium (ca), sulphur (s) and sodium (na) in plant tissue and bunch weight. data were submitted to anova and to least significant differences (lsd) with 5% of significance. apm and dppm were higher in a and c, while the lower values were found in the shallow soil (d). values of mff and mfs were higher in both sites a and d that also presented larger amount of nutrients in plant leaves. however, higher amount and adequate levels of p in plant leaves were observed in the site a, on which plants presented higher bunch weigth. it showed that effective soil depth and soil microrelief have influence in nutrients uptake, plants growth, and productive potential of banana plants irrigated at apodi plateau.
