Julieta Ramos-Loyo,Leonor Mora-Reynoso,Luis Miguel Sánchez-Loyo,Virginia Medina-Hernández
Schizophrenia Research and Treatment , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/584725
Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to determine sex differences in facial, prosodic, and social context emotional recognition in schizophrenia (SCH). Thirty-eight patients (SCH, 20 females) and 38 healthy controls (CON, 20 females) participated in the study. Clinical scales (BPRS and PANSS) and an Affective States Scale were applied, as well as tasks to evaluate facial, prosodic, and within a social context emotional recognition. SCH showed lower accuracy and longer response times than CON, but no significant sex differences were observed in either facial or prosody recognition. In social context emotions, however, females showed higher empathy than males with respect to happiness in both groups. SCH reported being more identified with sad films than CON and females more with fear than males. The results of this study confirm the deficits of emotional recognition in male and female patients with schizophrenia compared to healthy subjects. Sex differences were detected in relation to social context emotions and facial and prosodic recognition depending on age.

Introduction Sex differences in schizophrenia regarding to clinical, neuroanatomical, cognitive, emotional and social domains have been reported (i.e.,[1–6]). With respect to psychopathological characteristics, male patients suffer more acute symptoms than females, with higher prevalence of paranoid symptoms, aggression, and antisocial behavior [7]. The latter, on the other hand, show more affective disorders, such as anxiety and depression [8], as well as sudden changes in appetite, weight, and sexual activity [9]. Schizophrenic females also show a less deteriorative course during the illness [10], a better premorbid adjustment in the social, sexual, and marital domains, and improved outcomes with a higher index of spontaneous remissions and better treatment response than males, probably due to the protector effects of sexual hormones [11–13]. Other authors have pointed out that females are more capable of living independently, while male patients are more used to living in sheltered houses [13]. Furthermore, males present a higher number of hospitalizations and greater deterioration; thus, their outcomes and social reintegration tend to be unfavourable [7]. Some studies have reported sex differences in cognitive functions in schizophrenia [3, 14–16]. Results of these studies suggest that females perform better than males in executive functions, visual working memory, verbal memory, and learning. In this regard, schizophrenic females may be less vulnerable to cognitive deficits than their
Die Bedeutung von "Familie": Erz hlungen aus drei Generationen The Sense of Family: A Narrative of Three Generations El sentido de la familia: una construcción con las tramas de vida de tres generaciones

Forum : Qualitative Social Research , 2008,
Abstract: Gegenstand meines Beitrages ist die Frage, wie Familien Sinn und Bedeutung des Begriffes "Familie" konstruieren. URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs080237 The purpose of the present study was to explore how families construct the significance of the word "family." This article develops a theory derived from an analysis of four previous qualitative studies that included individual interviews with members of 14 families in Caracas, Venezuela, from different socioeconomic strata. In each case interviews were conducted with members from three different generations. The narratives included references to other family members. The results showed the importance of family in the participants' discourse and that its meaning is related to the origin and structure of this institution: middle class families believe that family structure plays a core function in the children's education and in social stability. For lower class families, tradition and experiences within generations are important. However members of second and third generations attempt to distance themselves from many of the first generation’s traditions and experiences as their lifestyles are so different. URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs080237 La finalidad del estudio fue construir un sentido de familia con los significados que dan hombres y mujeres de tres generaciones y condiciones socioeconómicas diferentes. The family in today′s society: the experience of the Venezuelan middle class

Athenea Digital , 2007,
Abstract: The present study investigates how the Venezuelan middle class understands the family, and identifies the origin of meanings shared among family members. Individual interviews were conducted with members of five middle class families. In telling of their family experiences, and their relationship with the public sphere, interviewees intertwined the narrative of their life with that of other family members. They intimately connected their lifestyles to the customs and traditions of their childhood and their current family. This study shows that people try to adapt family life to current contingencies, without compromising their convictions and principles. This will guarantee the family's stable survival over time. Keywords: family and society, middle class families, family life, meanings.

Abstract: one of the aims of gender studies is to invite women and young people to talk about their life experiences. another purpose is to decipher gender appropriate behavioral patterns that men and women learn, express, and above all carry over into action. the object of the present study is to analyze narratives by men and women that belong to an extended, modified family. the members of this family live in a disadvantaged area of caracas. the constant comparisons method has been used. the themes and emergent categories of this analysis are indicative of the meanings adscribed to the notion of unfaithfulness within the social structure of this family. the women seem to show a hidden tolerance of infidelity and to associate it with the difficult conditions in which they live.

Abstract: from the perspective of human development psychology, we aim to contribute to the discussion as to the social significance of the relationship between the catholic school and low-income families, its impact on the way such families function and on the development of the human beings involved. we have been guided by the following questions: - what does it mean for the members of low-income families to belong to a catholic school? what are the consequences of the entry and permanence of their children in a catholic school for the psycho-social development of such families? using a qualitative methodology, we carried out in depth-interviews with fourteen members of ten families belonging to the cfcd school and to inhabitants of the la vega district in caracas. the information was analyzed using the constant comparative method. results indicate that the significance that parents place on the school is closely connected to the immediate benefits associated with belonging to such institutions, namely: safety and good habits, discipline and a help for the parents, as well as the pertinence and social utility that such institutions have for the community. during their education, students acquire a set of values that allow them to visualize for themselves and their families a distinct future. one important consequence of the educational experience in the school is that parents and children make formation and professionalism a joint project in which they invest a great deal of effort and generate targets

One of the aims of gender studies is to invite women and young people to talk about their life experiences.

Abstract: an epidemiological and molecular study on e. histolytica and e. dispar was carried out in 428 patients with gastrointestinal symptomatology of diarrhea from different health centers in cumana, sucre state. the samples were processed through: direct examination with 0.85% physiological saline solution, temporal lugol staining, trichromic staining and the ritchie method of concentration; a sucrose gradient was used for cyst isolation. the small subunit of the 16s rna was amplified by nested, multiplex pcr for the molecular detection. the e. histolytica/e. dispar prevalences according to the direct, ritchie and trichromic staining methods were 20.09, 13.79 and 12.15%, respectively; while prevalences according to pcr for e. histolytica and e. dispar were 6.31% and 4.44%, respectively, also detecting four cases of mixed infection. sequencing of the amplified fragments of e. histolytica showed 100% homology with the sequences with strains from merida (venezuela), usa, brazil, mexico and genbank. the infections by e. histolytica and e. dispar were statistically associated with age but not with sex. the presence of mucus, blood and abdominal pain were only associated to e. histolytica infection. the moderate prevalence of e. histolytica shows the endemic status of this population and warns about the potential problem as a morbidity and mortality in sucre state. the frequency of e. dispar in this population suggests the existence of an overestimation problem in the diagnosis of amoebiasis with its clinical and epidemiological implications, and shows the poor knowledge about the true prevalences of this protozoan. the pcr allowed for the differential identification of e. histolytica and e. dispar, as well as the presence of mixed infections, making a great tool for epidemiological amoebiasis studies.

Abstract: entamoeba histolytica is considered a public health problem due to its high prevalence and its consequences for the affected individuals, and especially in children where it can cause death. few studies of the prevalence of this parasite have been carried out in northeastern venezuela, and for this reason feces samples from 400 patients with gastrointestinal symptoms of diarrhea, of all ages and both sexes were studied, in order to determine the prevalence of complex entamoeba histolytica/entamoeba dispar and its association with other parasites. samples were analyzed copro-parasitologically using 0.85% saline physiological and lugol solution, trichromic staining, hidden blood tests and concentration tests elaborated by ritchie. an interview was made with each participant in order to register epidemiological and clinical data. a prevalence of 16.0% (n=64) for complex entamoeba histolytica/entamoeba dispar was found. other frequently observed parasites were blastocystis hominis 19.3% (n=77), entamoeba coli 9.3% (n=37), endolimax nana 8.0% (n=32), giardia lamblia 5.8% (n=23), trichuris trichiura 4.0% (n=16), ascaris lumbricoides 3.8% (n=15). about 15.5% of the patients showed multiparasitic infections and 37% presented only one parasite. blastocystis hominis was the species most frequently associated with complex entamoeba histolytica/entamoeba dispar 10.9% (n=7). symptoms were variable, including vomiting (26.6%), nausea (39.1%), abdominal pain (68.8%), fever (28.1%) and flatulence (65.6%). the presence of amoebas was not statistically associated with sex (χ2=0.46, p>0.05), but it was related to age (χ2=16.63, p<0.05), and the age group from 10-19 years old was the most affected. the prevalence of intestinal parasites, especially for complex entamoeba histolytica/entamoeba dispar, indicated that this is an important problem which needs to be addressed by sanitation authorities.
