Ciencias marinas , 2012,
Abstract: this study examines the abundance and distribution of panama brief squid (lolliguncula panamensis) caught during 15 fishery surveys in the gulf of california in 2003-2006 and 2008. a total of 2460 individuals were captured in 66 positive squid trawls. based on the seasonal sea surface temperature pattern, captured individuals were grouped into two periods: cold (<22 °c: december, january, february, march, and april 2003-2006 and 2008) and warm (≥ 22 °c: may, june, july, august, september, october, and november 2003-2006 and 2008). during the cold period, 1579 organisms were sampled, and during the warm period, 881. abundance by sex showed that females were more abundant during both periods (62% cold, 57% warm) than males (17% cold, 12% warm). during both periods, females (99.6% cold, 91.0% warm) as well as males (99.3% cold, 95.3% warm) presented reproductive activity (maturing and mature stages), and they were captured at depths between 7 and 40 m. the highest abundances occurred in diurnal trawls at an average depth of 40 m during the cold period and 24 m during the warm period.
Ecocardiografía en la valvulopatía mitral
Rodríguez, Leonardo;
Archivos de cardiología de México , 2005,
Abstract: echocardiography has become the premier method for the evaluation of valvular heart disease. in mitral valve disease, echo provides detailed anatomic and functional information. using echo has allowed us to increase our understanding of the mechanisms that play a role in mitral regurgitation. echocardiography not-only detects the presence of mitral regurgitation (mr) but also allows quantification of its severity. the importance of quantitative data forthe prognosis of patients with mr has been shown recently. intraoperative echo has been very helpful in guiding surgical repair and improving its results. the new techniques for percutaneous treatment of mitral regurgitation strongly rely on echo for on-line monitoring of device deployment and immediate results. Fibrilación atrial: control del ritmo vs control de la frecuencia
Rivera Rodríguez, Leonardo;
Archivos de cardiología de México , 2006,
Abstract: the atrial fibrillation treatment has been controversial since almost a century. several studies have been done and there is not a clear therapeutic strategy despite the new technological advances. the disyuntive persist between sinus rhythm control vs ventricular rate control. the main studies like affirm, race, piaf, paf2 and staf have not shown a definitive strategy treatment. recently, several subgroups have been stablished and variables like life quality and functional state have been included. new therapeutic strategies have resulted. heart rate control is recommendable for asymptomatic 65 years old patients and older, whereas rhythm control is better for patients with severe symptoms.

Abstract: this is a review on some biological and ecological characteristics of the early life stages of myctophids that exemplify their adaptations to coastal upwelling zones and oceanic nearby areas. the approach has been, however, not to make an exhaustive list of all possible research subjects but, in a more pragmatic way, a) to identify relevant aspects that can be approached with currently available methods in the region and, b) through examples of studies published nationally and regionally, to stimulate future research in larval ecology in the humboldt current. three major themes were assessed: taxonomy and systematics, population ecology and reproductive strategies and, ecophysiology of the early life stages. among the former, we detected a lack of information and descriptions, especially on the egg stage. we also document how differences occur in widely distributed species at the inter-population level. the development of new molecular techniques are expected to produce an increase in studies about inter- and intraspecific relationships at a regional level. on population biology studies, the relatively scarce information available from upwelling areas suggests that some species have the capacity to modify their reproductive strategies according to the oceanographic conditions, as it has also being documented for invertebrates. however, there is a shortage of information as a result of the lack of adequate sampling techniques to determine efficiently the changes in distribution, in particular in the vertical domain. the purchasing of equipment in several research centers of the region is expected to solve these limitations and to incentive the studies in this research line. finally, in relation with studies on ecophysiology, we also detected a shortage of information even in very traditional topics such as on feeding and vertical migrations. interestingly, however, we noticed that some research lines and methods currently very popular in the international literature
Diagnóstico de las taquiarritmias en el paciente pediátrico
Rivera-Rodríguez, Leonardo;
Archivos de cardiología de México , 2009,
Abstract: arrythmias in the pediatric patient usually are considered rare; nonetheless, their number is increasing. the paroxistic supraventricular tachycardia is the most frequent symptomatic arrhythmia. the diagnosis is based on electrocardiographic register. there are few diagnostic tools including the holter monitoring and loop recorders. once the tachychardia is detected, a deductive electrocardiographic diagnosis and specific treatment are established.

Interestingly, however, we noticed that some research lines and methods currently very popular in the international literature (age and growth of larval fish utilizing otoliths), are also being utilized for larval fish studies of the Humboldt Current.
