Acute urinary retention as a late complication of subcutaneous liquid silicone injection: a case report
Leandro Luongo de Matos,Leonardo Seigra Lopes,Júlia Virgínia de Andrade Saggiomo,Eric Roger Wroclawski
Einstein (S?o Paulo) , 2009,
Abstract: Acute urinary retention is characterized by a sudden interruption of urinary output; urine is retained in the bladder due to either functional or obstructive anatomic factors, and cannot be voided. The main causes of acute urinary obstruction are benign prostatic hyperplasia, constipation, prostate adenocarcinoma, urethral stenosis, clot retention, neurological disorders, following surgery, calculi, drugs, or urinary tract infections. A transvestite patient, aged 55 years, described having had liquid silicone subcutaneously injected in various parts of the body, the last one four years ago. He complained of absent urinary output during the last 14 hours. The physical examination revealed skin deformation due to migration of implants; a hard nodule (characterized as a foreign body) was present in the preputium and a diagnosis of acute urinary retention was made; an unsuccessful attempt to exteriorize the glans for urinary catheterization, was followed by therapeutic cystostomy. Acute urinary retention has not been mentioned in the medical literature as a complication of liquid silicone subcutaneous injection.
Dieta e comportamento de forrageamento de Suiriri affinis e S. islerorum (Aves, Tyrannidae) em um cerrado do Brasil central
Lopes, Leonardo E.;
Iheringia. Série Zoologia , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0073-47212005000400001
Abstract: the foraging behavior of suiriri affinis (campo suiriri) and s. islerorum (chapada flycatcher), two sintopic tyrant flycatchers in the central brazilian cerrado (tropical savanna) was studied. during 2003, 188 feeding bouts of s. affinis and 150 of s. islerorum were registered. differences between the two species in the feeding height, foraging substrate, phytophysiognomy used, and foliage density at the point of foraging observation were found. the attack methods, attack direction, distance of flight, and plant species used did not differ between both species. the analysis of 26 stomach contents of members of this genus revealed only arthropods. the low percentage of feeding bouts directed to fruits (only 7% and 9%, respectively) confirmed the insectivorous character of this genus.
A ética e a moral nas rela es entre-humanos: resenha crítica do filme “A Ilha”
Leonardo Magela Lopes Matoso
Cárdenas, Leonardo Querido;Lopes, Fernando Dias;
Cadernos EBAPE.BR , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1679-39512006000200005
Abstract: the formation of strategic alliances is clearly evident on the current organizational setting. it's one of the main strategies used by organizations that want to remain competitive. in this sense, this article aims to explain what are strategic alliances and what are the reasons why contemporary organizations form this kind of cooperative set, demonstrating its main characteristics and the advantages that can be achieved by establishing such alliances. afterwards, an analysis on how the tendency of formation of strategic alliances can be understood is done according to two different theoretical approaches: the theory of resource dependency and the transaction costs theory. therefore, it is intended to contextualize how and why these alliances are formed, trying to understand these theoretical approaches with the objective of verifying how they interpret this organizational phenomenon. finally, this study tries to correlate how these approaches match in an attempt to clarify the reasons of forming cooperative sets.
Biologia reprodutiva de Suiriri affinis e S. islerorum (Aves: Tyrannidae) no cerrado do Brasil central
Lopes, Leonardo Esteves;Marini, Miguel ?ngelo;
Papéis Avulsos de Zoologia (S?o Paulo) , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0031-10492005001200001
Abstract: the breeding biology of suiriri affinis (campo suiriri) and s. islerorum (chapada flycatcher) is described for the first time. the nest of s. affinis is a basket constructed mainly with vegetable fibers and lined with a thick layer of silk cotton. all its exterior is ornamented with lichens and dry leaf fragments. all those layers are firmly attached to each other by a large amount of spider web. the nest is supported by its bottom and sides between two or more divergent branches. although superficially similar, the nest of s. islerorum present many differences, being shorter, shallower, and supported only by its sides between a forked branch. its interior is also lined by an additional layer of vegetable fibers over the silk cotton layer. the nest of both species is constructed exclusively by the females. the eggs of s. affinis (mean of 20.8 x 15.1 mm, 2.5 g) are pearl white, and those of s. islerorum (20.4 x 15.4 mm, 2.4 g) are light cream, presenting a wreath of small brown blotches around its thicker end. the fledglings of s. islerorum are very similar to the adults, while those of s. affinis present the head, back and wing coverts largely tipped white. the incubation is performed only by the female, lasting 15.2 days for both species. the nestling period of s. affinis and s. islerorum is of 18.9 and 18.3 days, respectively. some evidences suggests that s. affinis may be a cooperative breeder.

Bhering, Leonardo Lopes;Cruz, Cosme Dami?o;
Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-204X2008000300013
Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the optimum size of populations for the study of genetic mapping of full sibling families, through data simulation of genome and populations. parental genomes and population samples of full sibling families of both completely and non-completely informative types, were simulated. the generated samples had 100, 200, 400 and 600 individuals, with three linkage groups each, and 11 codominant multi-allelic molecular marks, spaced by ten centimorgans in each linkage group. one-hundred repetitions were accomplished by sample. in completely informative populations, the optimum size of 200 individuals is enough to rescue the original information, however, for the non-completely informative population, it is necessary a larger population, with 600 individuals.
Plantas medicinais: fatores de influência no conteúdo de metabólitos secundários
Gobbo-Neto, Leonardo;Lopes, Norberto P.;
Química Nova , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-40422007000200026
Abstract: since secondary metabolites represent a chemical interface between plants and surrounding environment, their syntheses are frequently affected by environmental conditions. thus, variations in the total content and/or of the relative proportions of secondary metabolites in plants can take place. we review the main environmental factors that can streamline or alter the production or concentration of secondary metabolites in plants. how seasonality, circadian rhythm, developmental stage and age, temperature, water availability, uv radiation, soil nutrients, altitude, atmospheric composition and tissue damage influence secondary metabolism are discussed.

Comportamento de forrageamento e dieta de Polystictus superciliaris (Aves, Tyrannidae) no sudeste do Brasil
Hoffmann, Diego;Vasconcelos, Marcelo F.;Lopes, Leonardo E.;Rodrigues, Marcos;
Iheringia. Série Zoologia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0073-47212007000300014
Abstract: the present article describes the foraging behavior and diet of polystictus superciliaris (wied, 1831), a poorly known species restricted to eastern brazilian mountains. the work was carried out from april to december 2005 in the serra do rola mo?a state park, nova lima, minas gerais (20°03's, 44°00'w). for each foraging bout we recorded the attack behavior, attack direction, substrate, height of foraging substrate, and habitat type where the attack occurred. the species diet was determined through direct field observations and by analyzing the stomach contents of 16 individuals. polystictus superciliaris uses mainly "canga coura?ada" (93.3%), and leaves (69.1%) of the most abundant plants of the area as substrate for the capture of preys. the species is generalist in relation to attack behavior. analysis of stomach contents revealed the exclusive presence of arthropods. field observations confirmed the exclusive insectivory of p. superciliaris, which was not observed consuming fruits or other vegetable matter.
Rela??o entre modifica??es cinemáticas da corrida e o tempo limite na vVO2máx
De Lucca, Leonardo;Melo, Sebasti?o Iberes Lopes;
Revista Brasileira de Cineantropometria & Desempenho Humano , 2012, DOI: 10.5007/1980-0037.2012v14n4p428
Abstract: exhaustive running at maximal oxygen uptake velocity (vvo2max) can alter running kinematic parameters and increase energy cost along the time. the aims of the present study were to compare characteristics of ankle and knee kinematics during running at vvo2max and to verify the relationship between changes in kinematic variables and time limit (tlim). eleven male volunteers, recreational players of team sports, performed an incremental running test until volitional exhaustion to determine vvo2max and a constant velocity test at vvo2max. subjects were filmed continuously from the left sagittal plane at 210 hz for further kinematic analysis. the maximal plantar flexion during swing (p<0.01) was the only variable that increased significantly from beginning to end of the run. increase in ankle angle at contact was the only variable related to tlim (r=0.64; p=0.035) and explained 34% of the performance in the test. these findings suggest that the individuals under study maintained a stable running style at vvo2max and that increase in plantar flexion explained the performance in this test when it was applied in non-runners.
