Abstract: the ensemble weather forecast approach represents an attempt to extend the predictability of the dynamic atmospheric models. a simple away to produce ensemble weather prediction is to run the weather model starting from a set of slightly perturbed initial conditions. the objective of the present study is to present a methodology to determine the minimum and maximum surface temperatures using the grid history of the ensemble forecasts over brazil available at the center for weather forecasting and climate studies (cptec). the results indicated that forecasts of minimum (maximum) temperatures from the cptec general circulation model exhibit systematically higher (lower) temperatures than observed. a statistical correction based on the bias of the fifteenth earlier forecasts was used to improve the ensemble predictions. such corrections enhance the performance of the forecasts as measured by statistical indexes as rms, bias and anomaly correlation coefficient.

Abstract: this work aimed to evaluate the effect of the factors sex and different slaughter weight ranges (30-40kg, 40-50kg, 50-60kg) on the lipid content and fatty acids profiles of capybara meat. the samples were constituted of the cranial portion of the longissimus dorsi muscle of 28 capybaras (16 males and 12 females), from the same farm. the analyses were carried out at the meats and derived quality certification laboratory of the food technology institute - ital, in sp. the lipids were extracted using chloroform/ methanol (2:1 (v/v) mixture), following the methodology of folch et al. (1957), and the composition of fatty acids analysed by gas chromatography (bragagnolo, 1997). the raw loin of capybara presented 0,82% of lipids. there was significant difference (p <0,05) among the lipid content of males (0,65%) and females (1,09%). the fatty acids found in larger proportion were c18:2w6 (18,78%), c16:0 (16,38%), c18:0 (11,13%), c18:1w9 (10,91%), c20:0 (8,43%) and c20:4w6 (6,66%). there was no significant difference (p>0,05) among the contents of these fatty acids in males and females, and in the different slaughter weight ranges. a few significant differences between the factors sex and slaughter weight ranges were noticed in minor fatty acids. comparing to the domestic species, the capybara meat analyzed in this work presented low total lipid content and high percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Abstract: thirty-six whole male lambs were used, being twenty-four of santa inês breed and twelve of bergamácia breed, which weighed 15kg at the very beginning of the experiment, and were randomized allocated into slaughtering weight groups (swg) of 15, 25, 35 and 45kg. the objective of this work was to evaluate the ph post-mortem decline, color (ciel* a* b*), cooking weight loss (cwl) and shearing force (sf) in the longissimus dorsi (ld) and semimembranosus (sm) muscles. the examined parameters were submitted to a regression analysis. the value of ph for both muscles was expressed by regression equation of exponential type, presenting a fast fall in the first hours, followed by stabilization. the ld muscle glycolisis rate was found to develop more quickly with an increase in weight. the analysis for color components for both examined muscles presented the same behavior. the breed bergamacia presented larger index lightness (l*), that is to say, larger brilliance. the value of l* decreased, the red content (a*) increased and the yellow content (b*) linearly decreased as the weight increased. the general analysis for color components had indicated that lamb becomes darker with weight increase. the results of cwl and sf analyses were similar in both breeds and swg, the values for cwl were 28.0±2.5% (ld) and 30.5±4.1% (sm) and for sf 2.6±0.6kg (ld) and 2.8±0.7kg.

Abstract: ticks were obtained from dogs from february to september of 1999 at weekly intervals, in the county of piraí, state of rio de janeiro. four hundred seventy four ixodids were taxonomically identified, 103 amblyomma cajennense, seven amblyomma ovale, 209 rhipicephalus sanguineus, and 155 amblyomma sp. an hemolymph test associated with giemsa's stain revealed two specimens in 163 ticks tested (r. sanguineus and amblyomma sp), containing rickettsia-like organisms. direct immunofluorescence verified the presence of spotted fever group rickettsia in one specimen of r. sanguineus. considering the limited information on rickettsiosis in brazil, principally in relation to the vectors involved in perpetuating it in foci, these preliminary results give us an idea on the importance of infection in ticks, allowing to expand our knowledge on this zoonosis.
