Abstract: the objectives of this work were to quantify and qualify the urban trees of rancho novo district and downtown area of nova igua?u city, state of rio de janeiro, brazil. through the total inventory, 560 individuals distributed in 46 species were found in rancho novo district, in contrast to 1,374 individuals and 59 species in downtown area. in both areas, about 91% of the plants are among the 20 most frequent species, with ficus benjamina and cassia siamea predominating in rancho novo (21,6%) and downtown (19,1 %), respectively. rancho novo district presented 18% of arboured public areas against 13,5% of downtown area. about 95% of the species were considered as small and medium sizes. the largest height averages were reached by cassia siamea, in rancho novo, and almond trees in downtown. the species located under electric lines represented 40% of the tree population, being 45% of those trees with evident conflicts. in the downtown area, 62% of the population needs pruning, with cleaning being the most important requirement, while in rancho novo district pruning is recommended for 50% of the population, mainly ficus benjamina (14,5%). cassia siamea is the most pruning demanding species in downtown, with 25,8% of the recommendations. large discrepancies were found for tree spacing, with average values of 56m in rancho novo district and 74 m in downtown area. the substitution of cassia siamea, amendoeira, flamboyant and sombreiro by more appropriate species of urban trees is recommended.
Initial growth of six forest tree species in differents spacing conditions

Abstract: This work veriflied the influence of planting spacing on the initial growth of six forest species, at the age of 22 months, in plantations of forest recomposition in the Guandu River Basin. The experiment was installed in the SFE - thermoelectric power plants Barbosa Lima Sobrinho, located in the City of Seropédica-RJ. Forty eight tree species were planted, using the spacings, 1.0 x 1.0, 1.5 x 1.5, 2.0 and 2.0 x 3.0 x 2.0 m, which are the study treatments. At 22 months after planting, it was evaluated the growth in height, diameter at ground level (DNS) and area of the canopy for the species, Anadenanthera macrocarpa Benth. Brenan (angico vermelho), Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi (aroeira pimenteira), Schizolobium parahyba Blake (guapuruvu) Chorisia speciosa St. Hill (paineira), Cordia sp. (babosa branca) and Inga marginata (ingá). It was found that the studied species behaved in a different way in the differents spacing of planting, and that the planting density significantly influenced on the initial growth of all the species. In general, in wider planting spacings, the plants had higher growth.
Regenera??o de raízes de mudas de eucalipto em recipientes e substratos

Abstract: the objective of this research was to determine the root potential regeneration (p.r.r.) and its effect on the field performance of eucalyptus camaldulensis and e. urophylla seedlings grown in tubes and pressed blocks, with the following substrates: 1) sugarcane bagasse + filter cake (3:2; v:v) + 0.6% n (urea), and 2) decomposed eucalyptus bark + vermiculite (7:3; v:v). after cutting the lateral roots 2 cm away from the tap-root, the p.r.r. was evaluated measuring some characteristics of the regenerated roots such as: number, length, dry weight, area, volume, and growth rhythm. in the field, the survival was evaluated in the first two months, height growth and diameter at the soil level every other month, and number of primary lateral roots and deformations in 10 month-old plants. compared to the seedlings grown in tubes, seedlings grown in pressed blocks showed higher values of the p.r.r., and a better growth in the field. in the nursery, decomposed eucalyptus bark + vermiculite was the best growing substrate. however, except for e. urophylla height, all other characteristics measured in the field, as well as for e. camaldulensis, did not differ among the studied substrata. the p.r.r. did not show linear correlation with seedling survival in the field, but it was positively correlated with height and diameter at the ground level, in the first months after planting.

Abstract: an experiment with saccharum spp. was carried out to develop a new methodology for plantlet production using pressed industrial residues as substrate. the proportions of sugar cane bagasse, sugar plant filter cake and coconut husk in the substrate composition were analyzed along with the advantages of the finland pressed block and the conventional systems used for plantlet production. the seedlings quality at the and of the plant propagation stage was evaluated through plantlet diameter and height, shoot and root, total dry weights, and performance at the twelfth month. selection for planting was based on stem length, diameter, quantity and weight . the three residues tested were suitable to be used in a mixture to prepare pressed blocks. imported blocks and the ones prepared with both, sugar cane bagasse and the sugar plant filter cake mixed, 70 and 30%, v v-1 respectively, were the most suitable. the average morphological parameters of the plantlets produced by the conventional system were classified among the lowest.

Abstract: the quality of pinus taeda seedlings, produced in different types of containers, was evaluated based on root regeneration potential (rrp), to obtain seedling production with high survival rates and initial growth after planting. the study was conducted under greenhouse conditions, using five treatments: a) pressed blocks with 10 cm; b) 7 cm pressed blocks; c) bare root; d) d48 tubes (lower density); and e) d96 tubes (higher density). rrp in aquariums and boxes, was evaluated using the following parameters: a) total number of roots regenerated in aquariums; b) total number of regenerated roots > 1 cm in aquariums; c) total length of roots regenerated in aquariums and boxes (cm). seedling survival and initial growth were evaluated by measuring height of the aerial part and stem diameter at ground level. rrp was found to be a reliable physiological parameter to determine the quality of pinus taeda seedling and to predict its performance in the field. total length and number of new roots > 1 cm showed significant correlations with the performance of the seedlings in the field. the pinus taeda seedlings showing better quality for all the studied parameters, and field performance 24 months after planting were produced in 10 cm pressed blocks. the lowest averages for all parameters evaluated were observed in seedlings produced in tubes.
Sistema de blocos prensados para produ??o de mudas de três espécies arbéreas nativas

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the feasibility of using pressed blocks as containers for the production of inga marginata, jacaranda puberula and zeyheria tuberculosa seedlings. the pressed block system (440 cm3) was compared to plastic bags (330 cm3) and circular section tubes (280 cm3). the substrate used was a mixture of organic matter, ground charcoal and clayish soil (6:2:2). after pressing, the size of the blocks was 60 x 40 x 12 cm (length, width and height). height and diameter of the seedlings were measured monthly, starting at 60 to 150 days after transplantation. the next step was to determine the dry matter weight of the aerial part and root system. to evaluate the behavior of the seedlings produced in the various treatments under field conditions, the survival rate at two months from planting was measured. the seedlings produced by the pressed block system showed a growth higher than or similar to those produced in plastic bags or tubes. under field conditions, no statistical differences were observed for survival rate and growth of the seedlings from the pressed blocks, plastic bags and tubes. the pressed block system was found to be technically feasible for the production of seedlings of the forest trees species studied.

Abstract: Avaliou-se a qualidade de mudas de Pinus taeda com base no estudo do potencial de regenera o de raízes (P.R.R.), visando alcan ar altas taxas de sobrevivência e crescimento inicial após o plantio. No viveiro, foram empregados cinco tratamentos: a) blocos prensados com 10 cm; b) blocos prensados com 7 cm; c) raiz nua; d) tubetes D48 (menor densidade); e) tubetes D96 (maior densidade). No laboratório avaliou-se o P.R.R. em aquários e caixas, por meio da determina o dos seguintes parametros: a) número total de raízes regeneradas em aquários; b) número total de raízes regeneradas maiores que 1 cm, em aquários; e c) comprimento total de raízes regeneradas em aquários e caixas (cm). No campo, foram avaliados a sobrevivência e o crescimento inicial através das medi es de altura da parte aérea e do diametro do caule ao nível do solo. O P.R.R. foi considerado um parametro fisiológico confiável na determina o da qualidade de mudas de Pinus taeda e na previs o de seu desempenho no campo. O comprimento total e o número de raízes novas maiores que 1 cm apresentaram correla es significativas com o desempenho das mudas no campo. As mudas de Pinus taeda de melhor padr o de qualidade, com altos valores de P.R.R. e melhor desempenho no campo 24 meses após o plantio, foram produzidas em blocos prensados com 10 cm. As médias mais baixas, para os parametros avaliados em laboratório e no campo, foram verificadas em mudas produzidas em tubetes.
Regenera o de raízes de mudas de eucalipto em recipientes e substratos

Abstract: O trabalho teve como objetivo verificar o potencial de regenera o de raízes (P.R.R.) e seu efeito sobre o desempenho após o plantio de mudas de Eucalyptus camaldulensis e E. urophylla, produzidas em tubetes e em blocos prensados, utilizando os seguintes substratos: 1) composto organico de baga o de cana-de-a úcar + torta de filtro de usina a ucareira (3:2; v:v) + 0,6% N (uréia) e 2) casca decomposta de eucalipto + vermiculita (7:3; v:v). O P.R.R. foi avaliado, após a poda das raízes laterais a 2 cm da raiz pivotante, através do número, comprimento, peso de matéria seca, área superficial, volume e ritmo de crescimento das raízes regeneradas. No campo, as mudas foram avaliadas quanto à sobrevivência, nos dois primeiros meses e quanto ao crescimento em altura e diametro ao nível do solo, até o décimo mês. As mudas produzidas em blocos prensados apresentaram maiores valores de P.R.R. e maior crescimento após o plantio. O substrato que conferiu melhores características às mudas foi a casca de eucalipto decomposta + vermiculita, mas essa diferen a n o foi mantida no campo, exceto para a altura do E. urophylla. O P.R.R. n o apresentou correla es lineares com a sobrevivência das mudas no campo, mas correlacionou-se positivamente com o crescimento em altura e diametro ao nível do solo, nos primeiros meses após o plantio.

Abstract: Um experimento com Saccharum spp. foi conduzido, tendo como objetivo desenvolver uma nova metodologia de produ o de mudas desta espécie, utilizando três resíduos agroindustriais prensados, como substrato. Foram estudadas diferentes propor es de baga o de cana-de-a úcar, torta de filtro de usina e casca de coco na composi o do substrato. O sistema de blocos prensados, de origem finlandesa, foi comparado ao sistema convencional. A qualidade das mudas, no final da rota o no viveiro, foi avaliada através do diametro de colo, número de perfilhos por planta, peso de matéria seca das partes aérea, radicular e total e o desempenho das mudas 12 meses após o plantio, através do comprimento, diametro, número de entrenós e peso dos colmos. Os três resíduos mostraram condi es de serem utilizados em mistura para o preparo de blocos prensados. Os blocos prensados de origem finlandesa e os preparados com baga o de cana-de-a úcar e torta de filtro de usina, misturados, respectivamente, nas propor es de 70 e 30 %, v v-1, foram os mais adequados para a produ o de mudas de Saccharum spp.. As médias dos parametros morfológicos das mudas produzidas pelo sistema utilizado pelosistema convencional foram classificadas entre as mais baixas do experimento.

Abstract: The seedlings were produced according to two methodologies: pressed blocks and stiff plastic tubes. A mixture of decomposed sugar-cane bagasse (60%) and industrial sugar-cane plant residues (40%) were used as substrate. The blocks were made by pressing the humid substrate in metallic moulds with the dimensions of 60 x 40 x 20 cm (lenght, width and height) and pressure of 10 kgf/cm2 for 15 minutes. Under this load the blocks height was reduced to 10 cm. They were placed in wooden boxes with screen bottom. The stiff plastic tubes had circular section 12 cm high, with volume capacity of 50 cm3. The seeds were sown in the blocks 5 cm apart, by means of a spatula. At the end of nursey phase, the seedlings were planted the field. After 2, 6 and 10 months of planting, the height and the diameter at the ground level were evaluated. At the age of 10 months it was also evaluated the number of laterals root and deformatiom cofficient the three plants for treatment. Two months after planting, the plants originated from the pressed blocks showed growth highly signifficant in relation to those of the stiff plastic tubes. At 10 months, of age only Eucalyptus grandis seedlings showed significant difference concerning to height and diameter at the ground level between plants produced by pressed blocks and stiff plastic tubes. For the three species, the pressed blocks seedling showed higher number of lateral roots and smaller number of root deformation coefficents in comparision to the plants from the stiff tubes.
