Malformations of cortical development: current concepts and advanced neuroimaging review
Andrade, Celi Santos;Leite, Claudia da Costa;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2011000100024
Abstract: malformations of cortical development (mcd) result from disruptions in the complex process of the human brain cortex formation and are highly associated to severe epilepsy, neurodevelopmental delay and motor dysfunction. nowadays, magnetic resonance imaging (mri) is the cornerstone of the work-up of patients with epilepsy and modern advanced imaging techniques have improved not only our ability to detect and characterize cortical malformations, but also in identifying associated functional abnormalities that are far beyond the structural visualized lesions. herein, we address the most currently used classifications of mcd and make a concise review of the embryological process of cortical development. our main goal is to summarize recent advances and new trends in diagnostic imaging techniques concerning mcd. thereafter, follows a brief discussion of specific disorders and their radiological features.

Radiologia Brasileira , 2001,
Ganglioneuroblastoma of the cerebellum: neuroimaging and pathological features of a case
Gasparetto, Emerson L.;Rosemberg, Sérgio;Matushita, Hamilton;Leite, Claudia da Costa;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2007000200029
Abstract: objective: to report a case of ganglioneuroblastoma of cerebellum, with emphasis to the neuroimaging and pathological findings. case report: a one year and eight-month-old girl presented with a two-month history of hypoactivity and tremor in the legs. the mri showed an enhancing cerebellar mass hypointense on t1 and hyperintense on t2-weighted images. the patient underwent a craniotomy with resection of the lesion. the histological and immunohistochemical studies defined the diagnosis of ganglioneuroblastoma. conclusion: the mri findings of our case showed no features which could help in the differentiation between ganglioneuroblastoma and the other common types of posterior fossa neoplasms in the pediatric population.
Pharyngeal dimensions in healthy men and women
Daniel, Mauro Miguel;Lorenzi, Maria Cecília;Leite, Claudia da Costa;Lorenzi-Filho, Geraldo;
Clinics , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1807-59322007000100002
Abstract: introduction: epidemiological studies reveal a high male prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. a possible explanation for this male predominance is the existence of anatomical differences in the upper airway between men and women. methods: the upper airways of 10 male and 10 female healthy volunteers were prospectively evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging. anatomical pharyngeal and column cross-sectional linear measurements were made in sagittal t1 and axial t1 and t2 weighted fast spin-echo images. results: men had significantly greater mean sagittal pharyngeal structural dimensions compared to women for all structures with the exception of the craniocaudal length of the soft palate and the thickness of the submentonian fat. in contrast, cross-sectional linear dimensions were similar in men and women with the exception of the laterolateral tongue length, which was greater in men. all mean linear measurements of the pharyngeal air column were similar in men and women at all studied levels. conclusions: men and women present pharyngeal air columns with similar dimensions, but in women this column is surrounded by smaller structures, which might imply a smaller effort to keep its patency. our data suggest the existence of an anatomical protective factor in women against the upper airway collapse.
Comparison between digital subtraction angiography and magnetic resonance angiography in investigation of nonlacunar ischemic stroke in young patients: preliminary results
Conforto, Adriana Bastos;Fregni, Felipe;Puglia Jr., Paulo;Leite, Claudia da Costa;Yamamoto, Fabio Iuji;Coracini, Karen F.;Scaff, Milberto;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2006000300001
Abstract: purpose: we preliminarily investigated the relevance of performing digital subtraction angiography (dsa) in addition to magnetic resonance angiography (mra) in definition of ischemic stroke etiology in young patients. method: dsas and mras from 17 young patients with nonlacunar ischemic stroke were blindly analyzed and their impact on stroke management was evaluated. results: etiologies were the same considering results of either dsa or mra in 12/17 cases. in 15/17 patients no changes would have been made in treatment, regardless of the modality of angiography considered. conclusion: these preliminary results suggest that dsa may be redundant in two thirds of ischemic strokes in young patients. further larger prospective studies are necessary to determine indications of dsa in this age group.
Cerebral microbleeds and intravenous thrombolysis: case report
Conforto, Adriana Bastos;Lucato, Leandro Tavares;Leite, Claudia da Costa;Evaristo, Eli Faria;Yamamoto, Fábio Iuji;Scaff, Milberto;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2006000500027
Abstract: intravenous thrombolysis is an important procedure that has significant impact on ischemic stroke prognosis. however, intracranial hemorrhage (ich) is a feared complication of this procedure. it has been suggested that cerebral microbleeds (cmbs) may increase the risk of ich after thrombolysis. we report on a 69 years-old woman with multiple cmbs submitted to intravenous thrombolysis without complications.
