Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli categories among the traditional enteropathogenic E. coli O serogroups: a review
Campos, Leila C;Franzolin, Marcia R;Trabulsi, Luiz R;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762004000600001
Abstract: the socalled enteropathogenic escherichia coli (epec) o serogroups include typical and atypical epec, enterohaemorrragic e. coli, enterotoxigenic e. coli, and enteroaggregative e. coli. the aim of this article is to review the composition of each o serogroup and the major serotypes, clones, and additional virulence characteristics of each of these diarrheageniccategories. their adherence patterns and genetic relationships are also presented. the review is based on the study of 805 strains of serogroups o26, o55, o86, o111, o114, o119, o125, o126, o1127, o128, and o142 most of which isolated in s?o paulo from children with diarrhea between 1970 and 1990. since some o serogroups include more than one diarrheageniccategory o serogrouping only should be abandoned as a diagnostic method. however serotyping is a reliable method for those serotypes that correspond to clones.
Estratégias de referencia??o no discurso midiático: práticas ideológicas de inclus?o e exclus?o de dizeres no discurso sobre a guerra
Campos, Carla Leila Oliveira;
Linguagem em (Dis)curso , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1518-76322010000100003
Abstract: in this paper, we investigate the discursive role of referenciation as a discursive activity of introduction of referents. we examine the lexicalization process in the introduction of the referent "iraq war" in the brazilian magazine veja, working with theories that investigate the role of media in the production and dissemination of symbolic practices. these practices are essential for the construction of our view of the world, especially in the field of international relations. through the articulation of these studies and the critical discourse analysis developed by van dijk, we try to understand the discursive role of referenciation in the symbolic practices of the media. we conclude that referenciation is an important object of analysis that reveals the ideological positions of socio-culturally situated subjects and as such is a central element in the construction of our views of social events.
Colicinogeny in Salmonella serovars isolated in Brazil
Campos, Leila Carvalho;Hofer, Ernesto;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1988, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02761988000200007
Abstract: a study of colicinogeny was made in 748 strains of salmonella (97 serovars) isolated from different sources; human (291), animal (119), environmental (141), food (102) and animal feed (95). colicin production was detected in 64 strains (8.6%), particularly isolated from foods (30.4%). col. e1 (53) and ia (44) were the most frequently observed, especially in s. agona for environment and food sources. col v production was identified in 5 strains of s. typhimurium within 8 producer cultures isolated from humans. its relationship with the sources and serovars of salmonella are discussed.
Brazilian Propolis: Correlation between Chemical Composition and Antimicrobial Activity
Kelly Salom o,Paulo Roberto S. Pereira,Leila C. Campos,Cintia M. Borba,Pedro H. Cabello,Maria Cristina Marcucci,Solange L. de Castro
Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine , 2008, DOI: 10.1093/ecam/nem058
Abstract: The chemical composition of ethanol extracts from samples of Brazilian propolis (EEPs) determined by HPLC and their activity against Trypanosoma cruzi, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Klebisiella pneumoniae, Candida albicans, Sporothrix schenckii and Paracoccidioides brasiliensis were determined. Based on the predominant botanical origin in the region of samples' collection, the 10 extracts were separated into three groups: A (B. dracunculifolia + Auraucaria spp), B (B. dracunculifolia) and C (Araucaria spp). Analysis by the multiple regression of all the extracts together showed a positive correlation, higher concentrations leading to higher biological effect, of S. aureus with p-coumaric acid (PCUM) and 3-(4-hydroxy-3-(oxo-butenyl)-phenylacrylic acid (DHCA1) and of trypomastigotes of T. cruzi with 3,5-diprenyl-4-hydroxycinnamic acid derivative 4 (DHCA4) and 2,2-dimethyl-6-carboxyethenyl-2H-1-benzopyran (DCBEN). When the same approach was employed for each group, due to the small number of observations, the statistical test gave unreliable results. However, an overall analysis revealed for group A an association of S. aureus with caffeic acid (CAF) and dicaffeoylquinic acid 3 (CAFQ3), of S. pneumoniae with CAFQ3 and monocaffeoylquinic acid 2 (CAFQ2) and of T. cruzi also with CAFQ3. For group B, a higher activity against S. pneumoniae was associated DCBEN and for T. cruzi with CAF. For group C no association was observed between the anitmicrobial effect and any component of the extracts. The present study reinforces the relevance of PCUM and derivatives, especially prenylated ones and also of caffeolyquinic acids, on the biological activity of Brazilian propolis.

Ensaio: Avalia??o e Políticas Públicas em Educa??o , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-40362010000400009
Abstract: this paper presents an investigation on the profile of the graduated students of teachers training courses of the state university at ponta grossa (uepg). these graduated students had their curricula based on the new statements from the guidelines national curriculum for teachers' training for the basic education. this text is based on references to the critical theory and freire's theory to compose the literacy, understood as acquisition of knowledge to teach and the ability of applying it in school situations, in the context of world's reading. it uses qualitative and quantitative methodological procedures driven to teachers graduated in 2008. the analysis indicates an adaptive and conservative tendency of the respondents about the school context. it isn't possible to affirm that the changes on teachers' training curricula allowed making committed teachers, identified with the basic education, not even competent readers and dialoguers according with the school's reality.
Valor do esfrega?o no diagnóstico per-operatório dos tumores provenientes de neurocirurgias
Chimelli, Leila;Campos, Ivelise de Souza;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 1993, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X1993000200007
Abstract: the smear technique has been used for rapid diagnosis of tumors removed in neurosurgeries in many neuropathological centers. in order to> assess the diagnostic accuracy of this technique, we examined 137 smears and made a cytohistological correlation. our cases include 12 astrocytomas, 4 anaplastic astrocytomas, 26 glioblastomas, 7 oligodendrogliomas, 5 medulloblastomas, 8 schwannomas, 17 meningiomas, 13 pituitary adenomas, 20 metastatic tumors and 18 assorted tumors and non neoplastic lesions. the correct diagnosis was made in 91.2% of the cases which coincides to the literature. the knowledge of the localization and the characteristic morphologic features of some tumors were important for the diagnosis. the ability to recognize normal nervous tissue in smears was important even to help the surgeon to reach the tumor. we believe that the use of smears should be encouraged in our country in view of the simplicity of its preparation and accuracy of results.
Aspecto citológico de tumores intracranianos e do canal vertebral
Campos, Ivelise de Souza;Chimelli, Leila;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 1993, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X1993000200008
Abstract: we present the cytologic aspects of 137 tumors operated by neurosurgeons, including 12 astrocytomas, 4 anaplastic astrocytomas, 26 glioblastomas, 7 oligodendrogliomas, 5 meduloblastomas, 8 schwannomas, 17 meningiomas, 13 pituitary adenomas, 20 metastatic tumors and 18 assorted tumors and nonneoplastic lesions. we have also analysed cytologically samples of normal nervous tissue obtained from autopsies, aiming at its recognition and distinction from the neoplastic tissue in biopsies. the tumors were analysed in smears which were subsequently compared with the histological sections. although it is important to observe cytological details in the tumor, occasionally cells are arranged in such a way, that an overview of the smear pratically allows the diagnosis of the tumor.

Ivo-Dos-Santos, Jairo;Mello, Deise L. Campos;Couto-Fernandez, José C.;Passos, Roberto M.;Dias-Carneiro, Leila A.;Castilho, Euclides A.;Galv?o-Castro, Bernardo;
Revista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de S?o Paulo , 1990, DOI: 10.1590/S0036-46651990000200006
Abstract: sera from 472 brazilian subjects, confirmed to be either positive or negative for hiv antibodies and comprising the total clinical spectrum of hiv infection, were utilized in the evaluation of six commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (elisa), as well as of four alternative assays, namely indirect immunofluorescence (iif), passive hemagglutination (pha), dot blot and karpas aids cell test. the sensitivities ranged from 100% (abbott and roche elisa) to 84.2% (pha) and the specificities ranged from 99.3% (iif) to 80.2% (pha). the sensitivity and specificity of the pha and the sensitivity of the karpas cell test were significantly lower than those of the other tests. although the iff and dot blot had good sensitivities and specificities, the six elisa were more attractive than those tests when other parameters such as ease of reading and duration of assay were considered.
Conversion of ethanol to acetone & other produces using nano-sensor SnO2(110): Ab initio DFT  [PDF]

Natural Science (NS) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/ns.2011.36065
Abstract: The material considered in this study, SnO2 (110), has a widespread use as gas sensor and oxygen vacancies are known to act as active catalytic sites for the adsorption of small mo-lecules. In the following calculations crystal line SnO2 nano-crystal have been considered. The grains lattice, which has the rutile structure of the bulk material, includes oxygen vacancies and depositing a gaseous molecule, either ethanol, above an atom on the grain surface, generates the adsorbed system. The conduc-tance has a functional relationship with the structure and the distance molecule of the na-no- crystal and its dependence on these quanti-ties parallels the one of the binding energy. The calculations have quantum mechanical detail and are based on a semi-empirical (MNDO me-thod), which is applied to the evaluation of both the electronic structure and of the conductance. We study the structural, total energy, thermo-dynamic and conductive properties of absorp-tion C2H5OH on nano-crystal, which convert to acetaldehyde and acetone.
Conta??o de ?causos? e negocia??o da verdade entre os Ave de Jesus, Juazeiro do Norte - CE
Campos,Roberta Bivar C.;
Etnográfica , 2009,
Abstract: this article is based on the ethnographic case of the ave de jesus, a group of penitents in northeastern brazil. it focuses on the debate about the negotiation of meaning and truth between the researcher and his/her object. the classic anthropological subject of beliefs and rationality is approached but the discussion is widened to include the particular interlocutory space generated in the relationship between researcher and subject, as it contributes to the definition of the situational context for the construction of meaning.
