Synthesis of Ceramic Pigments ACr2O4 Using the Non-Conventional Method of Co-Precipitation Assisted by Ultrasound and High Energy Milling  [PDF]

Abstract: In this research ceramic pigments have been synthesized with crystalline spinel structure and chromium based with a stoichiometry ACr2O4. A was an element with +2 valence metal, in this case, metals were zinc and iron, these pigments have been synthesized by non-conventional methods like the co-precipitation assisted by ultrasound and high milling energy. Pigments were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), spectrophotometry, and colorimetric CIELab method. Results showed that it was possible to obtain a crystallin desired structure at temperatures below 900°C by non-conventional methods. These results showed the advantages of ceramic pigments obtained by alternative routes, because it was possible to have a better control over stoichiometry and colorimetric structure properties. Furthermore, they were obtained at temperatures lower than those used by the traditional ceramic route.
Consideraciones sobre la vulnerabilidad en zonas urbanas de Puerto Rico ante la ocurrencia de eventos geológicos

Abstract: Los eventos geológicos en el Caribe han afectado poblaciones a lo largo de la historia. Fenómenos como terremotos, tsunamis, erupciones volcánicas y deslizamientos de tierra son algunos ejemplos de eventos geológicos que han causado pérdidas humanas y económicas a los países del Caribe. Todas sus poblaciones están potencialmente afectadas, pero son las áreas urbanas las que se resaltan en este artículo por su densidad poblacional, su concentración de infraestructuras y su frecuente localización en áreas costeras. Durante este ejercicio de reflexión se presenta la situación de riesgo geológico para Puerto Rico y la vulnerabilidad de sus zonas urbanas ante dicho riesgo. Se razona sobre las condiciones actuales en cuanto al manejo de riesgo geológico en la Isla de Puerto Rico. La reflexión se cierra con recomendaciones que podrían colocar a los habitantes de las zonas urbanas de la Isla en una posición menos vulnerable ante el riesgo geológico.

Abstract: this research was conducted to find an alternative use for direct human consumption of two small pelagic species known as the colombian pacific own carduma (cetengraulis mysticetus) and plumuda (opisthonema spp.). we developed a technology to produce three products: hot dogs, sausages and burgers, based on the prior preparation of a fish paste called surimi. we determined the moisture content, protein, fat, ash and carbohydrates, as well as a nutritional assessment were made of two species and final products. we determined also the percentage of utilization of aquatic resources feedstock. the products were made using a 50/50 mixture of surimi from each of the two species. through statistical analysis evaluated the proposed product acceptance test application affective satisfaction in non-trained judges evaluators. to this was determined to assess the sensory parameters: odor, color, flavor, appearance and texture using a seven-point hedonic scale, which ranged from "i like very much" to "dislike me so much". the process was supplemented by microbiological testing of finished products. the test results showed a 84,8% acceptance for hot dogs, 86,1% acceptance for sausages and 92,5% acceptance for burgers.

Abstract: the foods constitute an inherent need for the human, and these foods these must be consumed innocuous, otherwise, that the foods do not represent risk the consumer health. as a protection mechanism of the university community health, in this work the sanitary profile and the risk factors of diseases transmitted by food (dtf) were identified and evaluated in four places of food sale in a colombia university community. a diagnosis of the fulfillment of good manufacturing practice was made using a methodology of easy application in any country of the world and the microbiological analysis of foods, equipment and surface in contact with foods. the risk factors principals were the lack of documents of cleaning and disinfection programs, the lack of solid residues programs, the deficiency in the control plagues program, inadequate design of the constructions and the presence of faecal coliforms in fruit juices and fresh salads.

Abstract: Los alimentos constituyen una necesidad inherente al ser humano, y estos deben ser consumidos inocuos, es decir, que no representen riesgo para la salud del consumidor. Como un mecanismo de protección de la salud de una comunidad universitaria, en este trabajo se identificaron y evaluaron los factores de riesgo para adquirir enfermedades trasmitidas por alimentos (ETA) en 4 expendios de alimentos de una comunidad universitaria en Colombia. Se realizó un diagnóstico del cumplimiento de buenas prácticas de manufactura utilizando una metodología de fácil aplicación en cualquier país del mundo y se realizó análisis microbiológico de alimentos, equipos y superficies. Los principales factores de riesgo encontrados fueron la falta de programas documentados de limpieza y desinfección, la ausencia de programas de residuos sólidos, la deficiencia en los programas de control de plagas, el mal dise o de las edificaciones y la presencia de coliformes de origen fecal en jugos de fruta y en ensaladas frescas. Alimento é uma necessidade inerente à condi o humana, e estes devem ser consumidos com seguran a, ou seja, que n o representem risco à saúde dos consumidores. Como um mecanismo para proteger a saúde de um comunidade universitária, neste trabalho foram identificados e avaliados fatores de risco para adquirir doen as transmitidas por alimentos (DTA) em 4 estabelecimentos de comida em um colégio da comunidade na Col mbia. Um diagnóstico de conformidade com boas práticas de fabrica o utilizando uma metodologia de fácil aplica o em qualquer país do mundo, e realizada análise microbiológica de alimentos, equipamentos e superfícies. Os principais fatores de risco encontrados foram a falta de programas documentados para limpeza e desinfec o, a ausência de programas de resíduos sólidos, a deficiência em programas de controle de pragas, a má concep o dos edifícios e à presen a de coliformes fecais em sucos de frutas e saladas frescas. Abstract: La presente investigación se realizó con el fin de buscar una alternativa para el aprovechamiento, para consumo humano directo, de dos especies denominadas peque os pelágicos propias del pacífico colombiano: la carduma (Cetengraulis mysticetus) y la plumuda (Opisthonema spp.). Se desarrolló una tecnología para la elaboración de tres productos: salchichas, salchichones y hamburguesas, basada en la elaboración previa de una pasta de pescado denominada surimi. Se determinó el contenido de humedad, proteína, grasas, cenizas y carbohidratos, así como también se hizo una valoración nutricional de las dos especies y de los productos finales. Se determinó, igualmente, el porcentaje de aprovechamiento de los recursos hidrobiológicos materia prima. Los productos se realizaron utilizando una mezcla 50/50 de surimi de cada una de las dos especies. Mediante análisis estadísticos se evaluó la aceptación de los productos propuestos aplicando pruebas afectivas de grado de satisfacción en jueces evaluadores no entrenados. Para esto se determinó evaluar los parámetros sensoriales: olor, color, sabor, apariencia y textura utilizando una escala hedónica de siete puntos, la cual abarcó desde "me gusta muchísimo" hasta "me disgusta muchísimo". El proceso se complementó con los análisis microbiológicos de los productos finales. Los resultados de la prueba de satisfacción indicaron que los tres productos fueron de gran agrado y buena aceptación por parte de los jueces consumidores utilizados para el desarrollo de la investigación. Los resultados mostraron una aceptación del 84,8% para las salchichas, del 86,1% para los salchichones y del 92,5% para las hamburguesas. Esta pesquisa foi realizada com o objetivo de buscar uma alternativa para o aproveitamento, para consumo humano direto, das duas espécies denominadas pequenas pelágicas próprias do litoral pacífico colombiano, a Carduma (Cetengraulis mysticetus) e a Plumuda (Opisthonema spp.). Foi desenvolvida uma tecnologia para a elabora o de três produtos: salsichas, salsich es e carne de hambúrguer com base na prepara o previam de uma pasta de peixe denominada surimi. Foi determinado, igualmente, a percentagem de aproveitamento dos recursos hidrobiológicos (matéria prima). Os produtos processados foram elaborados utilizando uma mistura 50/50 de surimi de cada uma das duas espécies de peixe. Através da análise estatística foi avaliada a aceita o dos produtos processados aplicando os testes afetivos de nível de satisfa o dos juízes avaliadores n o treinados. Abstract: animal toxins with high therapeutic potential and their use in biomedicine animal venoms are complex mixtures of proteins, peptides, enzymes and trace elements such as carbohydrates and salts, which serve to immobilize preys and to begin their digestion. some of these compounds have been isolated and characterized, or described as lethal toxins, while others have powerful actions on specific proteins, such as those involved in blood coagulation. due to the discovery in 1971 of the peptide that gave rise to captopril and to a better understanding of the potential effects of toxins, animal venoms started to be considered as rich sources of bioactive compounds, which not only provide the necessary tools to decipher molecular details of various physiological processes, but also are a source of inspiration to design and develop a range of new therapeutic agents. this review presents the application of new therapeutic options or models to design them based on certain molecules isolated from snake venoms, with high potential in fields such as biomedicine and pharmacy.

Abstract: the use of antibiotics to treat bovine mastitis, produces antibiotic residues in milk and decreased quality of dairy products. lactic acid bacteria have been proposed as an alternative to avoid the use of antibiotics. this paper reports the antimicrobial activity against pathogens responsible of bovine mastitis, of 4 lactic acid strains isolated from cattle in a state of acidosis ruminal. it also evaluated the specific growth rate (m) and antimicrobial activity of one of the strains, using two concentrations of carbon source (20 and 60 gl-1) in the commercial substrate mrs. the strains were biochemically identified as lactobacillus acidophilus, lactobacillus brevis, lactobacillus fermen-tum and weissella confusa. weissella confusa showed the best antimicrobial activity against the major pathogens responsible of bovine mastitis. when has been used 60 gl-1 of total sugars in the fermentation substrate, was obtained diameter of inhibition of 31 mm for staphylococcus aureus and 36 mm for streptococcus agalactiae. the antimicrobial activity of weissella confusa is superior antimicrobial activity reported by many other lactic acid bacteria, therefore weissella confusa could potentially be used to prevent bovine mastitis.

Abstract: the use of microorganisms as fertilizer has demonstrated beneficial effects on plant growth and is an alternative to chemical fertilizers. however, each microorganism has different beneficial effects. this study evaluated the effect of applying microorganism fertilizers, azospirillum brasilense, azotobacter chroccocum, and trichoderma lignorum on the growth of potted sugarcane plants var. cc 934418. plant growth was measured in terms of stem diameter, stem and root length, and the number of leaves and roots 15, 30, and 45 days after planting. plant growth evidenced statistically significant differences among treatments. microorganism fertilizers showed a positive effect on the growth of sugarcane plants, with azospirillum brasilense and trichoderma lignorum as the microorganisms that exercised the greatest effect on stem diameter, root systems, and plant foliation. beneficial effects of trichoderma lignorum on leaf growth were observed. this is a new scientific contribution since this species has not been reported as promoting plant growth.

Los venenos de animales son mezclas complejas de proteínas, péptidos, enzimas y trazas de elementos no proteicos tales como carbohidratos y sales, cuya finalidad es inmovilizar la presa y comenzar a digerirla; algunos de estos compuestos han sido aislados y caracterizados o descritos como toxinas letales, o se les han atribuido acciones potentes sobre proteínas específicas como, por ejemplo, las involucradas en la coagulación sanguínea. Debido al descubrimiento en 1971 del péptido que dio origen al captopril y al entendimiento de los efectos potenciales de las toxinas, se empezó a considerar que los venenos de animales son fuentes ricas en compuestos bioactivos, que no solo proporcionan las herramientas necesarias para descifrar los detalles moleculares de diversos procesos fisiológicos, sino que también sirven como fuente de inspiración para dise ar y desarrollar agentes terapéuticos. Este artículo expone la aplicación de nuevas alternativas terapéuticas y de modelos para el dise o de las mismas basados en algunas moléculas aisladas de venenos de serpientes con alto potencial en campos como la biomedicina y la farmacia.
