Empirical Identity as an Indicator of Theory Choice  [PDF]

Abstract: There are many theories about theory choice in philosophy of science, but no any indicator of scientific theory has been precisely defined, let alone a united index system. By the example of empirical identity, I shall show that a range of scientific indicators to decide theory choice can be precisely defined by some basic concepts. I think that these indicators can provide us a better description of the principles of philosophy of science. The certain pursuit of theories’ empirical identity and novelty leads the cumulative view of scientific progress; under non-cumulative circumstance, it is totally practicable to judge a theory’s empirical identity as well as empirical novelty; empirical identity underdetermines the acceptance of a particular theory. It is possible that all the principles of philosophy of science could be explained again through the system of index of theory choice, thus a more rigorous theory of philosophy of science could be established.
Many-Worlds, Self, and Dreams  [PDF]

Abstract: The many-worlds interpretation offers a fundamental explanation to the seemingly bizarre quantum theory; however, it lacks empirical significance. In this work I put forward the concepts of “nousor” and “counterpart”, and the notion of self structure scheme, by which I argue that the existence of other parallel worlds could be revealed by dream, and those counterparts in different worlds can exchange information through the special nousor to ensure the oneness of counterparts. Many worlds and all lives there follow the rules of correspondence, convergence, limitation, as well as love and hate. Based on the proposed theory, I analyze not only déjà vu phenomenon, but also actual dreams and sleepwalking, to assist us to understand the concept of self. A large database of humanity’s dreams should be constructed for helping predict disruptions both individually and environmentally.
Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Mechanical Properties for α-SiO2 Crystal  [PDF]

Abstract: The mechanical properties of the α-SiO2 crystal are studied by molecular dynamics method with Tersoff potential function. The results show that the α-SiO2 crystal goes through elastic deformation, plastic deformation and fracture deformation in the process of uniaxial loading at room temperature. The α-SiO2 is from crystal phase transformation to amorphous phase in plastic deformation. And also by studying the influence of temperature on the tensile mechanical properties of α-SiO2, it finds that the yield strength and elastic modulus of α-SiO2 decrease gradually as the temperature increases. Moreover, the higher the temperature, the lower the fracture stress and fracture strain; the α-SiO2 crystal is easy to be broke under high temperature uniaxial loading. And it also finds that the crack is able to decrease the mechanical properties of α-SiO2 crystal.

Abstract: To widen the new way of thinking and to explore a new technology of rice planting, industrialized rice production is an advanced rice planting method. All processes of rice growth were finished in factory and they provided proper growth conditions (including light, CO2 concentration, temperature, moisture and minerals) on the base of different growth stages. This paper illustrated the theory of rice growth in factory, the processes of rice cultivation and fundamental structure of rice factory. It combined natural conditions with artificial environment to create an ideal rice growing environment. Rice cultivation’s cycle in factory was shortened and normally one day was divided into 2 - 3 special days. It could be continuous production and prevented rice planting from being affected by external conditions. Industrialized rice makes full use of energy on the basis of sunray and artificial supplies to increase the rice yield and it will start a revolution of rice planting and solve the problem of food safety.

Abstract: Four diverse genotypes of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni were included for Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) analysis. Total proteins were analyzed through slab type SDS-PAGE. Based on SDS-PAGE, specific bands were suggested to be used for identifying Stevia rebaudiana Berton. This method has the advantages of simplicity, high sensitivity and good accuracy and the SDS-PAGE proved to be a powerful tool for differentiating Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni varieties.

Abstract:

To study the lubrication of the contact zone between half-shaft gears and planet gears in the power-split device (PSD), TEHL line contact of bevel gears in PSD is approximately computed based on a theory in which a bevel gear is equalized to an equivalent spur gear. In the calculation, the housing is taken as the reference system and the influence of the housing’s rotating on the lubrication is ignored. Film pressure, film thickness and temperature rise are analyzed under maximum load condition. This research provides some approximate reference data for the design of lubrication and cooling system of PSD.

Abstract:

In this paper we discuss the technical possibilities of cloud-based virtual reality (cloud-based VR) computing tools for online collaboration in urban planning and design. We first create a digital asset representing our design proposal of a pedestrian bridge in Shibuya, Tokyo. A platform for cloud-based VR technology, i.e., a VR-Cloud server, is used to open the VR dataset to public collaboration over the Internet. The digital asset representing the design scheme of our pedestrian bridge includes buildings, roads, trees and street furniture for the entire urban area. The vehicles and people are designed and inputted into the virtual world of the urban area, in which they run and walk with predefined behaviour scenarios. Users share the VR world by accessing the VR-Cloud servers from remote clients, using cloud communication software to review vehicle and pedestrian crowd simulations and discuss the design concepts. Meanwhile, we compare the advantages and disadvantages of three cloud-based VR tools on their technical support for net collaboration: 1) VR-Cloud; 2) Google Earth; and 3) 3DVIA.

The Climate Change in Qingdao during 1899-2015 and Its Response to Global Warming  [PDF]

Abstract: In this work, the average mean (TAvg), maximum (TMax), and minimum temperature (TMin) and precipitation records of Qingdao from 1899 to 2015 are analyzed. The TAvg, TMax and TMin all go through several warm and cold periods, and exhibit statistically significant linear warming trend especially in spring and winter, as a response to global warming. Besides, the TAvg reflects more the TMin evolution for the most part, either as a trend or an abrupt change, and the contribution of TMin to Tavg is far greater than that of TMax. The abrupt change year of climate is also around 1979 in Qingdao, and it is 2 or 3-years later than the TAvg for the TMin, while there is no abrupt change of TMax. In terms of the precipitation in Qingdao, it varies periodically and dramatically with a slow increasing trend. As for the seasonal precipitation, the precipitation varies widely year by year for the four seasons but with no obvious variation trend except for spring.

Abstract: We propose a model composed of spin-polarized itinerant electrons and bosonic spin-wave excitations, and study renormalization of the spin-polarized itinerant electron bands due to electron-magnon scattering. Spin-polarized kink structures are predicted in the normal state quasiparticle dynamics of ferromagnetic superconductor as UGe2. It is suggested that the angle-resolved photoemission experiment may be helpful in this respect.
Kondo correlation and spin-flip scattering in spin-dependent transport through a quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic leads

Abstract: We investigate the linear and nonlinear dc transport through an interacting quantum dot connected to two ferromagnetic electrodes around Kondo regime with spin-flip scattering in the dot. Using a slave-boson mean field approach for the Anderson Hamiltonian having finite on-site Coulomb repulsion, we find that a spin-flip scattering always depresses the Kondo correlation at arbitrary polarization strength in both parallel and antiparallel alignment of the lead magnetization and that it effectively reinforces the tunneling related conductance in the antiparallel configuration. For systems deep in the Kondo regime, the zero-bias single Kondo peak in the differential conductance is split into two peaks by the intradot spin-flip scattering; while for systems somewhat further from the Kondo center, the spin-flip process in the dot may turn the zero-bias anomaly into a three-peak structure.
