Counterintuitive publicity and the rebound effect A publicidade contra-intuitiva e o efeito ricochete
Francisco Leite,Leandro Leonardo Batista
Galáxia , 2008,
Abstract: Counterintuitive publicity and the rebound effect — This paper shares with the reader some conceptual ideas of counterintuitive advertising, observing its possible effects on the reevaluation and deconstruction of beliefs and social stereotypes in the cognitive make-up of the viewer. The ironic rebound effect is singled out among the probable reflexes, according to the theory propounded by Daniel M. Wegner. This theory is applied taking as an example Fiat's commercial "The Driver", which was part of an advertising campaign in Brazil called "Review your concepts" to introduce its new Palio 2002 car model. The authors are currently engaged in a laboratory experiment to measure the above described theory in a consistent manner.

Abstract: this study aimed to estimate the occurrence of anti-toxoplasma gondii antibodies by means of the indirect immunufluorescent antibody assay (ifat) in cattle and pigs from slaughterhouses in two municipalities in the state of rio de janeiro. igg anti-t. gondii antibodies was found in 1.96% (9/459) of the cattle and 7.64% (31/406) of the pigs, without any positive association (p > 0.05) with risk factors for transmission and seropositivity. taking the cutoff point of ifat 3 1:64, titers of 64 and 256 were detected, suggesting chronic infection. despite the low prevalence rates found for cattle and pigs, these indicated environmental contamination in the municipalities investigated, biosafety failures at the technified pig farm evaluated and the possibility of human and animal infection through eating raw or undercooked meat from these animals.

Abstract: objective: screening for hpv as well as its correlation with anorectal cancer in patients carrying the human immuno deficiency virus (hiv) through high-resolution anoscopy (hra) and anal cytology. methods: we developed an observational study, double-blind attended by 31 patients with hiv independent proctologic complaints. patients underwent hra and anal cytology slides were sent to which sector pathology staining and analysis. results: we found 22 males and 9 females between 20 and 67 years. of the 31 tested, 4 were in stage of immunosuppression, 23 were using antiretroviral therapy, 16 with history of receptive anal sex and 12 with a history of condyloma acuminata. in the hra 11 patients had changes and 7 were confirmed by cytology. we also verified eight patients with abnormal cytology who had no changes to the hra. in the atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ascus) cytology had three, five with parakeratosis and/or hyperkeratosis, six intraepithelial lesions and a low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion high grade. conclusion: we suggest the use of anoscopy high resolution combined with anal cytology for screening in patients with the hiv, since these examinations are complementary for the detection of lesions that are related to anorectal cancer.

Abstract: the purpose of this study was to evaluate herbal extracts as alternatives to antimicrobial growth promoters for weanling pigs based on growth performance and organ weights. a 35-d randomized complete block design experiment was carried out to compare five treatments: control (c) - basal diet; antimicrobial (a) - basal diet supplemented with colistin + tiamulin (75 ppm of each); herbal extract - basal diet supplemented with 420 ppm of extracts of clove (ec); oregano (eo) and clove + oregano (ec + eo), respectively. herbal extracts consisted of essential oils of clove + eugenol and oregano + carvacrol. eighty pigs sorted in eight replications per treatment, and two animals per experimental unit were used for growth performance evaluation. at the end of experimental period, one animal per pen from the first four blocks was slaughtered for organ morphometry evaluation. specific contrasts of practical importance were tested. for 1-14 d of experimental period (24 to 38 days of age), pigs fed the antimicrobial supplemented diet showed better feed conversion rate (ca) than the mean of those fed herbal extract treatments, while pigs fed ec supplemented diet had better ca than those fed eo. for the total period (24 to 59 days of age), pigs fed antimicrobial showed higher body weight at 59 days of age (p59) and average daily gain (gdp) than the mean of those fed herbal extracts. pigs fed ec + eo had higher p59 and gdp than the mean of those fed other herbal extract treatments. for the organ morphometry data, the antimicrobials provided a higher relative weight of kidneys compared to the mean of treatments with herbal extracts. overall, antimicrobial agents provided the best growth performance of weanling pigs. concerning to herbal extracts, the combination of clove and oregano provided growth performance close to that of pigs fed antimicrobials, showing that this combination can be a potential alternative as growth promoter for weanling pigs.
