Ferrari Júnior, Evaldo;Lavezzo, Wagner;
Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982001000600006
Abstract: silage evaluation of elephantgrass cv. taiwan a146 was done at faculdade de medicina veterinária e zootecnia - unesp-botucatu. six treatments were used with four replications as follows: a - elephantgrass with eight hours of wilting under the sun; b - elephantgrass; c - elephantgrass (98%) plus cassava meal (2%); d - elephantgrass (96%) plus cassava meal (4%); e - elephantgrass (92%) plus cassava meal (8%); f - elephantgrass (88%) plus cassava meal (12%). the efficiency meal (12%) was greater than wilting in increasing total dry matter content. the addition of cassava led to a linear decrease in cp, om, ndf and hemicellulose content, at the same time it increased the nfe, ash and soluble carbohidrates contents of silages. the low levels of lactic acid showed that cassava meal was not very well processed by lactobacillus. no significant differences were observed among the acetic, propionic, butiric and lactic acid percentages of silages.

Hybrid Decision Models in Non-Proportional Reinsurance  [PDF]
Maik Wagner
Technology and Investment (TI) , 2010, DOI: 10.4236/ti.2010.11008
Abstract: Over the past years, risk measurement and therewith risk measures became more and more important in economics. While in the past risk measures were already adopted at the deposit of credit and shareholders equity, the approach now generates two hybrid decision models and applies them to the reinsurance business. The two introduced models implement a convex combination of risk measures and with it provide the possibility of modelling risk attitudes. By doing that, for the two hybrid decision models on the one hand can be shown, which risk attitude leads to the acceptance of a reinsurance contract and on the other hand, a deductible of which height an insurer is willing to undertake. Hence the possibility exists to identify the risk attitude of an insurer. In return, due to the knowledge of risk attitudes, under similar conditions the possibility arises to establish recommendations about the extent of the deductible at reinsurance contracts.

International Journal of Molecular Sciences , 2011, DOI: 10.3390/ijms12117861
Abstract: Novel DNA sequencing techniques, referred to as “next-generation” sequencing (NGS), provide high speed and throughput that can produce an enormous volume of sequences with many possible applications in research and diagnostic settings. In this article, we provide an overview of the many applications of NGS in diagnostic virology. NGS techniques have been used for high-throughput whole viral genome sequencing, such as sequencing of new influenza viruses, for detection of viral genome variability and evolution within the host, such as investigation of human immunodeficiency virus and human hepatitis C virus quasispecies, and monitoring of low-abundance antiviral drug-resistance mutations. NGS techniques have been applied to metagenomics-based strategies for the detection of unexpected disease-associated viruses and for the discovery of novel human viruses, including cancer-related viruses. Finally, the human virome in healthy and disease conditions has been described by NGS-based metagenomics.

Abstract: purpose: to evaluate spontaneous blink activity in the primary eye position in normal preschool children. methods: two hundred normal children aged 4 to 6 years were prospectively evaluated. they were digitally videotaped in a standard setting, taking the images on frontal and lateral plans, during the vigil state, in the primary eye position. the object of observation was located at the same level of the pupil. a sony lithium camera was used. the images were recorded on 8 mm tapes and transferred to a personal computer (macintosh g4) and processed with the imovie software. opening, closure and total blink times were measured using frame scale. the eyelid movement rhythm per minute was also evaluated, during three minutes. the data were submitted to statistical analysis. results: the complete eye blink was more frequently observed than the incomplete eye blink. the blink rate increased with age. the incomplete blink rate was the same for all the evaluated ages. the eyelid opening and closing times and the complete blink time were similar for both sexes, during all evaluation moments. there were no differences between genders regarding eye blink. the closing eyelid time was slower than the opening eyelid time. conclusions: the complete blink rate increases with age. the closing and the opening eyelid times and the complete blink were similar for both sexes in all evaluated ages and the opening time is faster than the closing time.
Questioning the Weber Thesis: Capitalist Ethics and the Hebrew Bible?  [PDF]
Sigmund Wagner-Tsukamoto
Sociology Mind (SM) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/sm.2012.21001
Abstract: Weber’s thesis proposed that it was ascetic Protestantism which supported the emergence of modern capitalism in 17th and 18th century Europe, and that this was a completely new and unique phenomenon in the history of mankind up to that point in time. This paper casts doubt on the Weber thesis by examining findings from an economic reconstruction of the Hebrew Bible, and proposing that modern capitalism the way Weber understood it is already visible in the ancient religious text of the “Hebrew Bible”. By means of institutional economic reconstruction, I show that the Hebrew Bible and particularly the stories involving Jacob and Joseph reveal a conceptual structure that can be compared with ideas of modern constitutional and institutional economics. Through this reconstruction, I find myself in agreement with one of Weber’s early but largely forgotten adversaries, Werner Sombart, who suggested, in a behavioral tradition, that other religions, and more specifically Jewish thought, contributed to the emergence of modern capitalism long before the advent of Protestantism.
Surgical Flap and Graft Reconstruction Workshop for Dermatology Residents  [PDF]

Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological Sciences and Applications (JCDSA) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/jcdsa.2015.52011
Abstract: Background: Traditional models for teaching surgical principles focus primarily on the apprenticeship theory; however there has been a trend in surgical education to certifying competency in a simulation environment prior to working with patients. Many surgical models emphasize learning the technical and manual dexterity skills necessary to be a surgeon, yet few focus on obtaining the theoretical and abstract skills needed for planning complex cutaneous surgical repairs with flaps and grafts. We developed and evaluated a novel surgical flaps and grafts workshop for residents through the Department of Dermatology. Methods: Participants received a 60 minute PowerPoint lecture focusing on the basic principles of cutaneous repair with flaps and grafts, with examples and explanation of each of the four main types of flaps and grafts. The participants then received nine photocopies of Mohs micrographic surgery defects with instructions to design three repairs, focusing on functional and aesthetic outcome. Hypothetical and actual repair designs were then discussed in an open forum format. Anonymous surveys administered to 11 dermatology residents assessed their knowledge level, confidence level, and likelihood of using flaps and grafts pre- and post-workshop using Likert scales. Overall experience was also assessed. A paired sample Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test was used for analysis, since the data was non-parametrically distributed. Results: There was a statistically significant increase in confidence performing flaps post workshop (p = 0.0469). There was also an increase in knowledge of flaps and grafts, confidence in planning flaps and grafts, and confidence in performing grafts post workshop, but these findings did not reach statistical significance. The workshop had no effect on expected future use of flaps and grafts. Conclusions: The surgical workshop is a novel simulation teaching tool for learning basic principles and design of flaps and grafts in cutaneous surgery.

Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492011000400014
Abstract: we report the case of a seven year-old male patient, born at term without any perinatal complications, referred to the retina/vitreous service for diagnostic elucidation. he had a history of progressive visual acuity loss on his left eye that started four years ago. on examination, he had decreased corneal diameter and corectopia of the right eye (od), without any noteworthy findings on the biomicroscopy of the left eye (os). the fundus of the od revealed total retinal detachment, and the os initially showed peripheral retinal vascular abnormalities and retinal exudation, associated with retinal vitreous traction on the temporal sector. the ct and mri of the brain/orbits showed no abnormalities, except for findings suggestive of an old retinal detachment on the od, confirmed by ultrasonography, which also showed microphthalmia of the od. the diagnosis of familial exudative vitreoretinopathy, a rare disease of autosomal dominant inheritance and related to consanguineous marriages, that can initially simulate coats disease, was proposed. the patient was treated with diode laser photocoagulation in the temporal periphery of the os, with improvement in the areas of vitreoretinal traction.
Perfluoroctano em cavidade orbitária após vitrectomia posterior e sutura de perfurante ocular: relato de caso

Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492011000400015
Abstract: a case of a perfluoro-n-octane leakage into the orbital cavity after corneoscleral suture, scleral buckling and pars plana vitrectomy in an eye with perforating injury after trauma is reported for the first time. a previously healthy 39-year-old man was sent for ophthalmic evaluation one day after suffering a penetrating ocular trauma in his right eye while hammering a nail. on the initial evaluation, the patient presented sudden reduction of visual acuity on his right eye with a perforating corneoscleral injury, intraocular foreign body and retinal detachment. the patient was submitted to corneoscleral suture, pars plana vitrectomy with perfluoro-n-octane administration to flatten the retina and scleral buckling, when it was found transfixation of the globe by the intraocular foreign body. postoperatively, computed tomography scans of the orbit were ordered due to proptosis, which showed the presence of hyperdense images, suggesting leakage of perfluoro-n-octane into the orbital cavity. thus, in cases of perforating eye injury, one should be suspicious about the possibility of intraocular foreign body, as well as possible occurrence of transfixation of the globe when scheduling the surgery.
