Interventions encouraging the use of systematic reviews by health policymakers and managers: A systematic review

Implementation Science , 2011, DOI: 10.1186/1748-5908-6-43
Abstract: We systematically reviewed the evidence on the impact of interventions for seeking, appraising, and applying evidence from systematic reviews in decision making by health policymakers or managers. Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Methodology Register, Health Technology Assessment Database, and LISA were searched from the earliest date available until April 2010. Two independent reviewers selected studies for inclusion if the intervention intended to increase seeking, appraising, or applying evidence from systematic reviews by a health policymaker or manager. Minimum inclusion criteria were a description of the study population and availability of extractable data.11,297 titles and abstracts were reviewed, leading to retrieval of 37 full-text articles for assessment; four of these articles met all inclusion criteria. Three articles described one study where five systematic reviews were mailed to public health officials and followed up with surveys at three months and two years. The articles reported from 23% to 63% of respondents declaring they had used systematic reviews in policymaking decisions. One randomised trial indicated that tailored messages combined with access to a registry of systematic reviews had a significant effect on policies made in the area of healthy body weight promotion in health departments. The limited empirical data renders the strength of evidence weak for the effectiveness and the types of interventions that encourage health policymakers and managers to use systematic reviews in decision making.Policymakers and managers working within health systems make decisions in efforts to improve health for individuals. The impact of the choices made by policymakers is experienced in the health status and daily lives of people in the form of laws and regulations, guidelines, public education campaigns, among others [1]. The choices made by healthcare managers affect environments where common goals and s

Computer Science , 2010,
Abstract: In this chapter, we assume that systematically studying spatial markers semantics in language provides a means to reveal fundamental properties and concepts characterizing conceptual representations of space. We propose a formal system accounting for the properties highlighted by the linguistic analysis, and we use these tools for representing the semantic content of several spatial relations of French. The first part presents a semantic analysis of the expression of space in French aiming at describing the constraints that formal representations have to take into account. In the second part, after presenting the structure of our formal system, we set out its components. A commonsense geometry is sketched out and several functional and pragmatic spatial concepts are formalized. We take a special attention in showing that these concepts are well suited to representing the semantic content of several prepositions of French ('sur' (on), 'dans' (in), 'devant' (in front of), 'au-dessus' (above)), and in illustrating the inferential adequacy of these representations.
Reaction-diffusion dynamics: confrontation between theory and experiment in a microfluidic reactor

Physics , 2002, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevE.67.060104
Abstract: We confront, quantitatively, the theoretical description of the reaction-diffusion of a second order reaction to experiment. The reaction at work is \ca/CaGreen, and the reactor is a T-shaped microchannel, 10 $\mu$m deep, 200 $\mu$m wide, and 2 cm long. The experimental measurements are compared with the two-dimensional numerical simulation of the reaction-diffusion equations. We find good agreement between theory and experiment. From this study, one may propose a method of measurement of various quantities, such as the kinetic rate of the reaction, in conditions yet inaccessible to conventional methods.

Abstract: We have used new generation sequencing (NGS) technologies to identify single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers from three European pear (Pyrus communis L.) cultivars and subsequently developed a subset of 1096 pear SNPs into high throughput markers by combining them with the set of 7692 apple SNPs on the IRSC apple Infinium? II 8K array. We then evaluated this apple and pear Infinium? II 9K SNP array for large-scale genotyping in pear across several species, using both pear and apple SNPs. The segregating populations employed for array validation included a segregating population of European pear (‘Old Home’בLouise Bon Jersey’) and four interspecific breeding families derived from Asian (P. pyrifolia Nakai and P. bretschneideri Rehd.) and European pear pedigrees. In total, we mapped 857 polymorphic pear markers to construct the first SNP-based genetic maps for pear, comprising 78% of the total pear SNPs included in the array. In addition, 1031 SNP markers derived from apple (13% of the total apple SNPs included in the array) were polymorphic and were mapped in one or more of the pear populations. These results are the first to demonstrate SNP transferability across the genera Malus and Pyrus. Our construction of high density SNP-based and gene-based genetic maps in pear represents an important step towards the identification of chromosomal regions associated with a range of horticultural characters, such as pest and disease resistance, orchard yield and fruit quality.
Existence of solutions for non-necessarily cooperative systems involving Schr?dinger operators
Laure Cardoulis
International Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences , 2001, DOI: 10.1155/s016117120100401x
Abstract: We study the existence of a solution for a non-necessarilycooperative system of n equations involving Schrödinger operators defined on ℝN and we study also a limit case (the Fredholm Alternative (FA)). We derive results for semilinear systems.
La Funció Pública Europea - La función pública europea - The Civil Service in Europe
Laure Levi
Patient-Reported Outcomes in Rheumatoid Arthritis: Why are They Important and How Should They Be Assessed?
Laure Gossec
Turkish Journal of Rheumatology , 2010,
Abstract: Patient reported outcomes have become increasingly important in the evaluation of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) over recent years. Besides pain and functional capacity, fatigue, sleep and well-being are also important for RA patients. We will discuss here the importance of patient-reported outcomes, different domains of health, and how to evaluate them, with a focus on questionnaires available in Turkey.
