PLOS ONE , 2011, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0026223
Abstract: Patients with glucocorticoid (GC) excess, Cushing's syndrome, develop a classic phenotype characterized by central obesity and insulin resistance. GCs are known to increase the release of fatty acids from adipose, by stimulating lipolysis, however, the impact of GCs on the processes that regulate lipid accumulation has not been explored. Intracellular levels of active GC are dependent upon the activity of 11β-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD1) and we have hypothesized that 11β-HSD1 activity can regulate lipid homeostasis in human adipose tissue (Chub-S7 cell line and primary cultures of human subcutaneous (sc) and omental (om) adipocytes. Across adipocyte differentiation, lipogenesis increased whilst β-oxidation decreased. GC treatment decreased lipogenesis but did not alter rates of β-oxidation in Chub-S7 cells, whilst insulin increased lipogenesis in all adipocyte cell models. Low dose Dexamethasone pre-treatment (5 nM) of Chub-S7 cells augmented the ability of insulin to stimulate lipogenesis and there was no evidence of adipose tissue insulin resistance in primary sc cells. Both cortisol and cortisone decreased lipogenesis; selective 11β-HSD1 inhibition completely abolished cortisone-mediated repression of lipogenesis. GCs have potent actions upon lipid homeostasis and these effects are dependent upon interactions with insulin. These in vitro data suggest that manipulation of GC availability through selective 11β-HSD1 inhibition modifies lipid homeostasis in human adipocytes.
Life at the Institute of Archaeology, 1952-54
Peter Gathercole
Archaeology International , 2003, DOI: 10.5334/ai.0704
Abstract: My years at the Institute were split into four often strongly contrasting parts.Primarily, there were the terms at St John's Lodge, the quietly decaying Regency mansion that fitted so appropriately, in its atmosphere, with the evidence of bomb damage still evident elsewhere in London. Secondly, there was the home life my wife Falmai and I had in our one room in Hackney, made exciting and consistently demanding following the birth of our son Jonathan in November 1953. Falmai hadtaken a degree in English at Bedford College, close to the Institute in Regent'sPark, from whose hall of residence I had sometimes left by a back door late on aSunday night to race for the bus back to Cambridge, to get into college before midnight.
Ortega,Laura L.;
Mundo agrario , 2009,
Abstract: the present study examines the social participation of residents and entities in the first peronism in mendoza, focusing on two different departments of production-economic profile. the hypothesis assumes that, within the general context of the peronist government, there were areas of participation and discussion to defend local interests at the municipal level, beyond the planning and centralization prevailing at the time (exercised from higher spheres of government) and the evolution of the peronist party.
López, Laura Cecilia;
Interface - Comunica??o, Saúde, Educa??o , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-32832012005000004
Abstract: the aim of this paper was to reflect on the concept of institutional racism and its appositeness for thinking about brazilian social contexts; and on how this relates to the actions, demands and disputes of the contemporary black movement towards the public authorities. institutional racism acts diffusely within institutions' and organizations' everyday routines, such that it leads to inequality in the distribution of services, benefits and opportunities to different segments of the population, from a racial point of view. this paper indicates that, for institutional racism to be deconstructed, public policies promoting deracialization are needed, as well as academic reflections on how these mechanisms operate. in the healthcare field, they can be assessed as biopower devices, since they manage the population's lives from a racial perspective. there is a requirement for qualitative research with an ethnographic approach that reflects on how these mechanisms operate within institutions' everyday routine.
López Angulo,Laura;
MediSur , 2009,
Abstract: women abuse is an obstacle to achieve equality, development, peace and social inclusion. this is a violation of human rights limiting their personal freedom and annulling their main warranties as their right to have security, integrity and even life. in the 90′ it has been identified as a health problem due to its frequency and severity, its magnitude and influence in health recovery. with the objective of supporting the decrease of this invisible plague from a public health perspective, we considered timely and pertinent to adjust a format of methodological guidelines aimed at setting rules and unifying procedures, including the complexity and implications of violence, based on the needs of each part.
López Gallego, Laura;
Psicologia & Sociedade , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-71822010000200021
Abstract: the approach made here about the "expert psy assemblage" inserted into the criminal field draws a path of analysis that considers the operation of this assemblage, highlighting the intertwined relationships between the legal and psychological knowledge. to undertake such analysis, specific documents produced by the psy experts, working under the judiciary power in uruguay, are used. the psy practices are understood as the effect of certain historical confluences related to strategies of objectivation, the translation of psy categories in juridical categories, and the incorporation of the logic of individualization as a central point of the "expert psy assemblage". the research question is what allows the incorporation of the "expert psy assemblage" in the criminal field.
Uma Análise das Políticas de Enfrentamento ao HIV/Aids na Perspectiva da Interseccionalidade de Ra?a e Gênero
López, Laura Cecilia;
Saúde e Sociedade , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-12902011000300006
Abstract: this article aims to analyze the hiv/aids policies, particularly campaigns, in the perspective of race and gender intersection. such perspective enables the understanding of how gender oppression and race oppression intersect each other, whereas, on the other hand, political action deconstructs these inequalities and enables the transformation of institutions in the promotion of gender and race equality. the ethnographic data i analyzed were collected during a qualitative research that focused on the actions carried out by organizations of the black movement and on their demands before the public power for participation in the struggle against the spread of the epidemics among the black population of the southern region of brazil. in the first part, i employ the concept of biopower to analyze the relation between race, gender and health. in the second part, i analyze the representations of body and subject activated in two nationwide hiv/aids campaigns centered on the image of a black woman, and the debates they brought about. the analysis reveals the centrality of the body as the expression of the black women movement's political struggle, stressing on and questioning the social vulnerability that results from the impact of biopolitics on the bodies, especially when gender and race are brought together.

Conditional probabilities and collapse in quantum measurements
R. Laura,L. Vanni
Physics , 2008, DOI: 10.1007/s10773-008-9672-7
Abstract: We show that including both the system and the apparatus in the quantum description of the measurement process, and using the concept of conditional probabilities, it is possible to deduce the statistical operator of the system after a measurement with a given result, which gives the probability distribution for all possible consecutive measurements on the system. This statistical operator, representing the state of the system after the first measurement, is in general not the same that would be obtained using the postulate of collapse.
