Abstract:

The best surgical technique for the treatment of mammary tumors in female dogs has been exhaustively debated among the scientific community. Despite biological knowledge of these tumors, some authors have suggested aggressive procedures, without any clinical advantage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of surgical procedure on the overall survival, disease-free interval and new lesion development interval in dogs with mammary tumors treated according to established prognostic factors. This prospective study included 143 intact female dogs that underwent surgery for mammary neoplasms and were followed up for about 738.5 days. Each animal represented a repetition. Each surgical technique represented a group: lumpectomy (P1), mammectomy (P2), regional mastectomy without cranial abdominal gland involvement (P3), regional mastectomy with cranial abdominal gland involvement (P4), and radical mastectomy (P5). Considering only the first surgical event, 84.6% of animals had more than one mammary tumor, and tumors were identified in two mammary chains in 52.5%. There was no difference in ipsilateral and contralateral tumor development when surgical techniques were compared. Only 33 dogs developed new lesions in remaining mammary tissue, without correlation with primary lesion. Surgical technique had no effect on the overall survival, disease-free

BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence is well documented as a comorbidity of obesity. Studies demonstrate improvement of incontinency after weight loss. However, the mechanisms are still not clear. AIM: To analyze the effects of bariatric surgery on pelvic floor function in women. METHODS: Thirty women were invited to participate. They were waiting for bariatric surgery. Evaluations were done on pre-operative period and one year after surgery. It comprehended: body mass index, urinary incontinence prevalence, quality of life through the King's Health Questionnaire, quality of pelvic floor muscular contraction through the Oxford Modified Scale and perineometry. RESULTS: Twenty four women were included in the study. The body mass index reduced from 46.96±5.77 kg/m

Abstract: Mammary gland tumors represent 42% of all tumors in the bitch. Although there are numerous studies about disease development and progression, some questions remain concerning the surgical treatment. Many surgical techniques may be used for the treatment of canine mammary tumors similar to Medicine, the advantages and disadvantages of each procedure have been extensively discussed. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence of surgical procedure on survival, disease free interval and new lesion development interval in dogs with mammary tumors treated according to the biological behavior of these lesions. For this, 143 intact bitches were submitted to surgery for the treatment of mammary tumors between 2007 and 2011. Removal of mammary tumors was performed through the simplest and less invasive surgical procedure necessary for the complete removal of all tumors and main known lymphatic connections between affected glands: lumpectomy, mammectomy, regional mastectomy (including abdominal cranial mammary gland or not) or radical mastectomy. Mean clinical follow-up was 738.5 days. Considering only the first surgical event, 84.6% of animals had more than one mammary tumor, and 52.5% had tumors in both mammary chains. Comparing surgical techniques, there was no difference in ipsilateral and contralateral tumor development. Only 33 dogs developed new lesions in remaining mammary tissue, without correlation with primary lesion. Surgical technique had no effect on overall survival, disease-free interval and new lesion development interval in patients on this study, treated according to oncological surgery principles and established prognostic factors for mammary gland tumors in dogs. It is important to consider these results when deciding on the surgical management of dogs with mammary tumors, to avoid aggressive surgical procedures that will not translate into clinical advantages to the patient.

Abstract: purpose: cyclophosphamide (cyp) is an antineoplastic agent used for the treatment of many neoplastic and inflammatory diseases. hemorrhagic cystitis is a frequent side effect of cyp. several studies show that simvastatin has important pleiotropic (anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory) effects. the purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of simvastatin on bladder, ureter and kidney injury caused by cyp. methods: adult male wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups. the cyp/sim group received simvastatin microemulsion by gavage during 7 days (10 mg/kg body wt) before the administration of cyp and the cyp/sal group rats received saline 0.9%. the control rats were not treated. after that, all rats were treated with a single dose of cyp 200 mg/kg body wt intraperitoneally. the rats were killed 24 h after cyp administration. plasma cytokines (tnf-α, il-1β, il-6) were measured by elisa. macro and light microscopic study was performed in the bladder, kidney and ureter. results: in the bladders of cyp/simv treated rats edema of lamina propria with epithelial and sub-epithelial hemorrhage were lower than in cyp/sal treated rats. the scores for macroscopic and microscopic evaluation of bladder and ureter were significantly lower in cyp/simv rats than in cyp/sal rats. the kidney was not affected. the expression of tnf-α, il-1β and il-6 was significatly lower in cf/sinv rats (164.8±22, 44.8±8 and 52.4±13) than in cf/sal rats (378.5±66, 122.9±26 e 123.6±18), respectively. conclusion: the results of the current study suggest that simvastatin pretreatment attenuated cyp-induced urotelium inflammation and decreased the activities of cytokines.
A TRíPLICE CONSTITUI O DA PERSPECTIVA éTICA DE PAUL RICOEUR THE THREEFOLD CONSTITUTION OF PAUL RICOEUR’S ETHICAL PERSPECTIVE
LARISSA NóBREGA DE ARAúJO PINTO
Synesis , 2012,
Abstract: Paul Ricoeur, in “The self as other”, sets it’s ethical perspective as: “the desire to live well with and for others in fair institutions”. This conception has a threefold structure: the selfhood, otherness and equality. Presented as “self-esteem”, the “solicitude” and “justice”, decisive aspects so as to answer the question about the ethical identity – guiding his entire moral philosophy – “who is capable of moral imputation?”. There so, intents this article to analyze each of the these constituent elements in order to understand it’s internal logic; as well as give emphase to the bias-aristotelian teleological ricoeurian philosophy.
A política dos homens de cor no tempo da Independência

Estudos Avan?ados , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40142004000100022
Abstract: the author analyzes the political movement through which poor, black men manifested their discontent with the portuguese monarchy and the proslavery society of bahia in 1798. the regionalism of bahia contributed to the exalted status of this movement, known then as inconfidência baiana [insurrection of bahia], which was more radical in advocating the independence of brazil and more republican than the inconfidência mineira [insurrection of minas] because it embodied the yearnings of colonial brazil's subordinate classes.

Materials Sciences and Applications (MSA) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/msa.2011.29169
Abstract: The ribbons of the Ti45.3Ni54.7 shape memory alloy were prepared through the melt spinning technique. The study was focused on investigating the effect of the rapid solidification and grain size at characteristic start martensitic (Ms), final martensitic (Mf), start austenite (As) and final austenite (Af) transformation temperatures. Changes on martensitic transformation temperatures in Ti45Ni55 melt spun ribbons were observed as grain size is reduced. Results of optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to associate grain size with transformation temperatures.

Abstract: this article discusses a combined model to perform climate forecast in a seasonal scale. in it, forecasts of specific stochastic models are aggregated to obtain the best forecasts in time. stochastic models are used in the auto regressive integrated moving average, exponential smoothing and the analysis of forecasts by canonical correlation. the quality control of the forecast is based on the residual analysis and the evaluation of the percentage of reduction of the unexplained variance of the combined model with respect to the individual ones. examples of application of those concepts to models developed at the brazilian national institute of meteorology (inmet) show good results and illustrate that the forecast of the combined model exceeds in most cases each component model, when compared to observed data.
Social Comparisons on Self-Perception and Mate Preferences: The Self and the Others  [PDF]

Psychology (PSYCH) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2014.57080
Abstract:

This study aimed to investigate the effect of social comparison on self-perception and mate preferences. For this purpose, 225 undergraduate student participants provided their self-perception before and after evaluating descriptions of stimuli subjects specifically developed with high or low levels of physical, social and status related attributes. Participants also provided a description of their ideal short- and long-term partner. We hypothesized that self-evaluations and mate preferences change in response to exposure to competitors with different levels of reproductively relevant attributes. Results indicated that individuals were aware of the characteristics valued by the opposite-gender in the mating market and that self-evaluation was affected by the attributes of other people. No effect of social comparison on mate preferences was observed. These findings advance our understanding of the mate selection process by contributing more evidence that one’s own perceptions of mate value seem to be affected by the values of other individuals. Attention to the reproductively relevant attributes of others can help individuals optimize the time and energy invested in mate selection and determine the mating tactic most appropriate to a specific social environment.
