Abstract: orcein staining of spermatocytes was used to study the meiotic behavior of holocentric chromosomes in three member of the genus antiteuchus (commonly known as stink bugs). we describe and illustrate the karyotype of antiteuchus mixtus, a. sepulcralis and a. macraspis which were cytogenetically characterized as having a diploid number of 2n = 14 and an xy sex chromosome system showing pre-reductional meiosis for autosomes and post-reductional meiosis for sex chromosomes. these species were also shown to have a long diffuse stage during meiotic prophase i and aberrant harlequin-type meiocytes. the chiasma frequency was also analyzed for two of the three species studied.

Abstract: The intrinsic structure of binary fields poses a challenging complexity problem from both hardware and software point of view. Motivated by applications to modern cryptography, we describe some simple techniques aimed at performing computations over binary fields using systems with limited resources. This is particularly important when such computations must be carried out by means of very small and simple machines. The algorithms described in the present paper provide an increased efficiency in computations, when compared to the previously known algorithms for the arithmetic over prime fields.

Abstract: Menopause is associated with unfavourable changes in the blood lipid profile as well as with a deterioration of glucose tolerance, which may help in increasing the incidence of cardiovascular diseases. In the same way Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) has different metabolic impact in relationship to the dose of estrogen component, the type of progestin and the route of administration. Most of the studies analyzed the effect of the combined estroprogestin therapy, therefore, the impact of the estrogen component alone isn t always differentiable but principal results are generally consistent. This review aimes to expound the metabolic impact of the estrogen replacement administration in postmenopausal women. A literature review was conducted to identify all the prospective, the randomized trials and to compare the effects of both low and high-dose therapy and route of administration (oral and transdermal). The results of estrogen replacement therapy on glucose metabolism showed minimal changes and differences among treatments. Some studies showed that neither peroral nor transdermal estradiol replacement therapy induced any negative effects on glucose metabolism. The estrogen substitution increases the rate of apolipoprotein metabolism in various degrees, depending on the type of lipoprotein. At present a considerable data document an increase in HDL and a reduction of LDL cholesterol, following estrogen therapy. Studies have clearly established that the estrogen treatment decreases total plasma cholesterol and increases or maintains plasma triglyceride levels. In conclusion the studies of ERT s effects on glucose and lipid metabolism are heterogeneous but all together the ERT impact may be considered neutral. However the low doses of estrogen therapy may give some beneficial effects. Above all the treatment may prevent the physiological worsening of the glucose and lipid metabolism in menopause.
Cytogenetics and redescription of Graomys (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae) from Chumbicha, Catamarca, Argentina

Abstract: the taxonomy, phylogenetic relationships and distribution of the genus graomys are confusing. in this note we report karyotypic data for specimens of graomys collected in chumbicha, catamarca province, argentina. their karyotypes agree with g. centralis with 2n = 42. the individuals from chumbicha are similar in morphology to g. griseoflavus but smaller. our results suggest that chumbicha's specimens are conspecific with g. medius. moreover, we propose to synonymize g. medius with g. centralis. other data of the genus suggest that the name g. chacoensis should be applied to specimens with 2n = 42.

Abstract: El ratón delicado de los salares (Salinomys delicatus) es un peque o roedor endémico de Argentina. Ha sido considerado como vulnerable a la extinción dada su distribución restringida y en parches, tama o poblacional peque o y especialización en hábitats salinos. A pesar de que el ratón delicado tiene adaptaciones morfológicas y fisiológicas para la supervivencia en ambientes áridos y salitrosos, poco es lo que se conoce de su historia natural. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo estudiar la historia natural de S. delicatus, reportar nuevas localidades de ocurrencia, caracterizar el uso de hábitat, su dieta y el ensamble acompa ante, y describir su biología reproductiva y morfología. Se registraron dos nuevos sitios de ocurrencia en ambientes de bosques en galería y bajos salinos en la región noreste de la provincia de Mendoza (Argentina), siendo las primeras citas para esta provincia. S. delicatus presenta una dieta omnívora, como es frecuente en otros roedores de desierto, y consume en igual medida semillas, artrópodos y plantas halófitas. El ensamble acompa ante está compuesto por no más de tres especies de peque os mamíferos que varían según la localidad, siendo esta riqueza similar a otros sitios del Monte. La proporción de sexos y el patrón de dimorfismo sexual mostraron un marcado desvío hacia las hembras (H:M = 3.6:1.1 y H:M = 1.151 respectivamente). La morfología externa y craneal presenta una importante variabilidad intra e interpoblacional, sugiriendo que el aislamiento juega un rol importante. Cuando se consideraron adultos y juveniles, conjuntamente dos de las seis medidas externas (longitud total y longitud de cabeza y cuerpo) y siete de las 22 medidas craneales resultaron significativamente mayores en hembras que en machos. Cuando se compararon solo los adultos, cuatro características externas (longitud total, longitud de cabeza y cuerpo, largo de la cola y peso) y seis medidas craneales fueron significativamente mayores en hembras que en machos. Este trabajo refuerza la importancia del desarrollo de nuevos estudios más detallados sobre la historia de vida de S. delicatus y permite reafirmar la importancia de conservación de esta especie. Abstract: Citogenética y redescripción de Graomys (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae) de Chumbicha, Catamarca, Argentina. El estado taxonómico, las relaciones filogenéticas y distribución de algunas especies del genero Graomys son confusas. Aquí reportamos datos de cariotipos para especímenes de Graomys colectados en Chumbicha (Catamarca, Argentina). Los cariotipos coinciden con G. centralis con 2n = 42. Los individuos de Chumbicha son similares en morfología a G. griseoflavus, pero mas peque os. Nuestros resultados sugieren que los ejemplares de Chumbicha son conespecíficos con G. medius. Por lo tanto proponemos sinonimizar G. medius con G. centralis. Otros datos del genero sugieren que el nombre G. chacoensis debería ser aplicado a los especímenes con 2n = 42.
