Effects of Smoke-water on Photosynthetic Characteristics of Isatis indigotica Seedlings

Abstract: Smoke-water (SW) had been reported to improve the growth of Isatis indigotica, a Chinese medicinal plant. However, there were very few reports on the mechanism of smoke-water improving plant growth. In this study the effects of smoke-water on the photosynthetic characteristics of I. indigotica seedlings were investigated for the purpose of understanding the mechanism behind this improved plant growth. The results showed that net photosynthetic rate (Pn) was increased by smoke-water, reaching a maximum on 15, 5 and 15 d after treatment with smoke-water at dilutions of 1:500, 1:1000 and 1:2000 respectively. Transpiration rate (Tr) and stomatal conductance (Gs) both showed similar trends to Pn, however, intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) was decreased with smoke-water treatment. The Fv/Fm was not significantly influenced by smoke-water treatment. The ?PSII was markedly promoted with the application of smoke-water (1:1000) compared with the control and the coefficient of photochemical quenching (qP) showed a similar trend to ?PSII. However the coefficient of non-photochemical quenching of chlorophyll (NPQ) was decreased with treatment of smoke-water. These findings indicate that smoke-water treatment induce an increase in photosynthesis and suggest the main factors leading to this might be the improved stomatal conductance and the enhanced level of the photochemical efficiency of PSII in leaves.
La Dramaticaly Enhances the Accumulation of Tanshinones in Salvia Miltiorrhiza Hairy Root Cultures

Abstract: The accumulation of tanshinones (tanshinone I, tanshinone II and cryptotanshinone) and the expression of key enzymes (HMGR?HMGS?KSL?DXR?CMK) of tanshinones biosynthetic pathways in Salvia miltiorrhiza hairy root cultures induced by La elicitor were investigated in this paper. La at 0.01mmol·L-1 and 0.1mmol·L-1 obviously stimulated the expression of HMGR on day 1 after treatment. The activity of HMGS and KSL was enhanced by La treatment at the earlier stage of the elicitation treatment and declined gradually at later stage. The activity of CMK was significantly improved with the treatment of La at dilution of 0.01mmol·L-1 on day 1 after treatment. La at 0.01mmol·L-1 and 0.1mmol·L-1 improved the activity of DXR by 161.8% and 378.4% respectively on day 3 after treatment. The content of tanshinone I was markedly enhanced by La at 0.01mmol·L-1 and 0.1mmol·L-1 on day 1 after treatment. La at 0.01mmol·L-1 enhanced the content of tanshinone IIA, which was estimated to be 40.9% higher than the control. The content of cryptotanshinone was significantly improved by 92.4% and 71.5% respectively on day 1 and 3 after treatment with La at 0.01mmol·L-1, while it was reduced by La at 0.01mmol·L-1, 0.1mmol·L-1 and 1mmol·L-1 7 days after treatment. In summary the accumulation of tanshinones and expression of key enzymes of tanshinones biosynthetic pathways were improved by La elicitor with lower dose while inhibited with higher dose. And the effect of La on the accumulation of tanshinones lagged behind its effect on the expression of key enzyme gene.
The Effects of Colostrum on Gastrointestinal Function and Related Diseases in Premature Infants: A Comprehensive Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials  [PDF]

Abstract: Aim: To systematically evaluate the effects of colostrum intervention on gas-trointestinal function and related diseases in premature infants. Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted in the Cochrane Library, PubMed, EBSCO, CINAHL, Embase, Medline, CBMDISC, CNKI, Wan Fang and VIP databases on the effects of colostrum and oral intervention on gastrointestinal function and related diseases in premature infants. Literature screening, quality evaluation and data extraction were conducted, and data analysis was conducted using Revman 5.3. Results: A total of 7 references were included, including 392 subjects. The combined results showed that: colostrum can effectively reduce the incidence of nosocomial infection [RR = 0.42, 95% CI (0.25, 0.73), P = 0.002]. Conclusion: Colostrums oral intervention can effectively reduce the incidence of nosocomial infection in premature infants. However, there was no advantage in feeding intolerance, necrotizing enters colitis and length of hospital stay.

Abstract: 采用盆栽实验的方法,研究了不同Cu处理水平(0、100和200 mg/kg)下,接种丛枝菌根真菌(arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi,AMF) Glomus mosseae对旱稻(Oryzal Sativa L.) 生长的影响。结果表明,未添加Cu处理下,旱稻菌根侵染率可达69%,随着土壤中Cu添加量增加,旱稻菌根侵染率显著下降(P<0.05)。与未接种处理相比,接种处理显著提高100 mg/kgCu处理下根系生物量以及200 mg/kgCu处理下地上部分生物量(P<0.05);接种处理显著降低了100 mg/kgCu处理下旱稻地下部Cu含量,却显著增加了200 mg/kgCu处理下旱稻地上部分以及地下部分Cu含量(P<0.05)。
Glass Formation in Ni-Zr-(Al) Alloy Systems

Abstract: Structural and thermal properties of binary ( ) alloys obtained by melt spinning and copper mold casting methods were investigated. The fully amorphous samples in a bulk form cannot be obtained in the binary Ni-Zr alloys over a wide composition range, though they have and values close to or even higher than those of the binary Cu-Zr bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). The low thermal stability of the supercooled liquid against crystallization and the formation of the equilibrium crystalline phases with a high growth rate are responsible for their low glass-forming abilities (GFAs). Relatively low thermal conductivities of Ni-based alloys are also considered to be another factor to limit their GFAs. The GFA of the binary Ni65.5Zr34.5 alloy alloyed with 4% or 5% Al was enhanced, and a fully glassy rod with a diameter of 0.5?mm was formed. 1. Introduction Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) have attracted much attention due to their excellent properties compared with their crystalline counterparts and potential applications as structural materials [1–3]. A variety of BMGs with high glass-forming ability (GFA) based on multiple components have been developed over the past two decades or so [4–10]. Among these BMGs, ordinary Ni-based BMGs are very attractive for engineering applications because of their ultrahigh strength and relatively low cost. Ni-based amorphous alloys with diameters of more than 1?mm have also been produced since 1999 [11–16]. These Ni-based BMGs belong mainly to LTM-ETM (LTM-late transition metals, ETM-early transition metals) group of alloys. Now, their critical value of thickness is up to 15?mm, but metalloids included in some alloy systems have tampered their manufacturability. So, it is necessary to develop new Ni-based BMGs including only common metallic elements. Developing new Ni-based BMGs is expected to expand engineering applications and is important for understanding the long-standing issues of glass formation mechanism. Various empirical methods have been proposed to guide the discovery of BMGs with higher GFA [1, 10, 17]. The criterion widely used as a long-standing guideline has predicted that deep eutectics are preferable for glass formation upon cooling a liquid, so the compositions near the eutectics have been chosen preferentially to obtain BMG in either simple binary or multiple component systems. Abstract: This paper discusses the latest progresses of studying the allelopathy of plants, including the collection,separation, and identification of allelochemicals, mechanism of action,and influential factors. Authors put forward some measures for the effective utilization of allelopathy and associated harmful effects mitigation, based on the analysis of pros and cons of allelopathy in medicinal herbs, in an attempt to improve the growing skills, breeding, and micro-environment of soil. The paper has made both theoretical and methodological evidences available for regulating the plantation of the medicinal herbs.

Abstract: The effects of four AM fungi on the growth and essential oil composition in rhizome of Atractylodes lancea were studied by pot experiments with or without AM fungi. The fresh weight and dry weight of underground parts and the content of essential oil composition of A. lancea were determined. The results showed that the infection rate of different AM fungi differed greatly. The drying rate in rhizome of A. lancea was significantly reduced in AM treatments, although the contents of main essential oil compounds were unchanged. In conclusion, there are selective interactions between AM fungi and A. lancea. AM fungi have significant impact on vegetative growth of the underground parts of A. lancea, whereas the quality of essential oil does not change significantly.
