Paulino, Janaina Aparecida;Lopes, Renata Ferrarez Fernandes;
Psicologia: Ciência e Profiss?o , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-98932010000400007
Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between verbal and non verbal intelligence, risk perception and intention to show risk behavior. forty-eight teenagers, including 22 men and 26 women around 16 years old answered three instruments: perception and intention to show risk behavior scale, reasoning tests battery and raven’s progressive matrix test. results indicated average classification concerning intelligence. there was significant difference between genres to mechanic reasoning, and men showed better performance than women. there was positive correlation between ethic-legal and health risk perception and verbal reasoning as well as between legal-ethic to health risk perception and intention to show financial risk behavior. correlation between intelligence and risk perception was observed; higher intellectual abilities seem to help the individual in better perceiving the risk situations, but they don’t garantee they can avoid behaviors which generate punishment and sanctions consequent to risk contact. studies like this have social and theoretical relevance to preventive social programs directed to teenagers in risk.

Guedes,Dartagnan Pinto; Lopes,Cynthia Correa;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89102010000500009
Abstract: objective: to validate the psychometric properties of the brazilian version of the 2007 youth risk behavior survey (yrbs) questionnaire. methods: the original version of the 2007 yrbs was translated into portuguese and back-translated into english. the questionnaire versions were analyzed by a committee of experts. the committee used semantic, idiomatic, cultural and conceptual equivalences as criteria of analysis. the final version of the translated 2007 yrbs questionnaire was administered in two occasions, with an interval of two weeks, in a sample of 873 high school students of both sexes, in the city of londrina, southern brazil, to identify the psychometric properties. test-retest reliability was analyzed by calculating the kappa index of agreement and prevalence rate of each type of risk behavior when application was repeated. chi-square test was used to identify statistical differences between the first and second questionnaire applications. results: after minor changes identified in the translation process, the committee of experts concluded that the portuguese version of the 2007 yrbs showed semantic, idiomatic, cultural and conceptual equivalences. significant differences between the prevalence rates of both applications were found in 23.4% of items. the identification of 91% of items with moderate-to-substantial kappa index of agreement and mean value of this index of 68.6% indicated the quality of psychometric properties of the portuguese version of the 2007 yrbs. conclusions: the translation, cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric qualities of the 2007 yrbs questionnaire were satisfactory, thus enabling its application in epidemiological studies in brazil.
Suicide in anti-psychiatry and in psychoanalysis
Correa, Cristia Rosineiri Gon?alves Lopes;
Revista Latinoamericana de Psicopatologia Fundamental , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-47142008000300004
Abstract: in psychiatry, the criteria by which the need for psychiatric attention is evaluated are often the object of disagreements, thus bringing to the fore debates regarding the validity of the concept of mental illness. whereas anti-psychiatrists, such as szasz (1961), argue against the prevention of suicide, freud (1915) describes a case of melancholia that would justify psychiatric intervention in suicidal individuals. in this article, i examine these arguments and argue that freud's account of melancholia puts szasz's position into question.

Abstract: Introduction: Benznidazole is the only medicine available in Brazil for Chagas ¢a a ¢ disease treatment, however it presents low efficacy in the chronic phase and several adverse effects [1-3]. Aim: Evaluate the effect of Causticum hahnemanni, Conium maculatum and Lycopodium clavatum [4-6] administered to mice infected with T. cruzi. Method: In blind randomized controlled trial 42 male Swiss mice, 8 weeks of age, have been grouped: GCaus ¢a a€ treated with C. hahnemanni 13cH (n=10), GCon ¢a a€ treated with C. maculatum 13 cH (n=11), GLy ¢a a€ treated with L. clavatum13cH (n=10) and CG ¢a a€ control group (n=11) treated with 7% hydro alcoholic solution 13cH. The animals were infected intraperitoneally with 1.400 blood trypomastigotes of T. cruzi - Y strain. Medications were been prepared according to Brazilian Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia [7]. Medication was diluted in water (1mL/100mL) offered ad libitum, from amber recipient during 16 hours administered 48 hours before infection and 48, 96 and 144 hours after inoculation. Parasitological parameters assessed: total parasitemia (TP), maximum peak of parasites (MPP), pre-patent period (PPP) and area under curve (AUC). Parasitemia was evaluated daily counting from the first day of infection. Clinical parameters assessed: weight, temperature, water and food intake and excreta were measured counting from the 5 o day before infection until animals ¢a a ¢ death or checking negative parasitemia for 3 consecutive days. Mortality was registered for 75 days after infection. Ethics Committee for Experiments in Animals gave approval UEM 054/11. Statistical comparison of data was performed with Kruskal-Wallis test, with 5% significance. Results and Discussion: The diluted medications have been significantly reduced the parasitological parameters: MPP (p<0,0000), TP (p<0,0000) and AUC (9,7 ±3,5)x109; (6,2 ±1,7)x109; (5,5 ±1,7)x109; (5,7 ±1,5)x109 (p<0,0001) measured in trypomastigotes/mL, considering CG, GCaus, GCon and GLy respectively. Besides, they increased the PPP for GCaus, GCon and GLy (5,07 ±0,54; 5,40 ±1,29; 5,91 ±1,1) in relation to CG (4,75 ±1,00) (p<0,0001). Survival was significantly different between groups (p=0,0001), with Ly showing survival estimate of 0,29 (IC: 0,182 ¢a a€ 1) versus 0,125 from CG (IC: 0,02 ¢a a€ 0,782) until the 21st day of infection. GCaus and GCon showed survival estimate 0 for 18 and 17 days, respectively. GLy presented significant increase in water intake (p=0,0000) and higher temperature control, lowering hypothermia before death (p<0,0000). Concl

A major challenge now faced by large wholesalers and retailers is to create competitive advantages. Private brand labels can be useful for a unique positioning proposition that distinguishes these enterprises from competitors. Empirical research investigated consumer perception of the positioning of private labels in important retail chains operating in Sao Paulo state and to some extent throughout Brazil. The MDS technique was used for data analysis to create a perceptual map. Brands were found to occupy positions or correspond to concepts in the mind of consumers. These were interpreted on a map with quality and variety on one axis and price on the other.

Chorioptic mange is of rare occurrence in goats, although it is an important skin disease resulting in economic loss due to the delay in the development of the animals, weight loss and economic losses to the leather industry. Thus, the aim of the present article was to report the occurrence of an outbreak of chorioptic mange in a goat flock reared in the city of Gravatá, (Lat. 08° 12’ 04’’ S and Long. 35° 33’ 53’’ W) in Pernambuco′s Agreste region. The animals showed wide alopecia areas, erythema, crusts and skin thickness in the following areas: armpits, sternum, ventral abdomen, caudal and cranium-medial facets of the hind legs and severe scratching. Chorioptes bovis spp was identified in skin scrapings. KEY WORDS: Chorioptes spp, goats, mange.
A Solar Energy Powered Autonomous Wireless Actuator Node for Irrigation Systems
Rafael Lajara,Jorge Alberola,José Pelegrí-Sebastiá
Sensors , 2011, DOI: 10.3390/s110100329
Abstract: The design of a fully autonomous and wireless actuator node (“wEcoValve mote”) based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard is presented. The system allows remote control (open/close) of a 3-lead magnetic latch solenoid, commonly used in drip irrigation systems in applications such as agricultural areas, greenhouses, gardens, etc. The very low power consumption of the system in conjunction with the low power consumption of the valve, only when switching positions, allows the system to be solar powered, thus eliminating the need of wires and facilitating its deployment. By using supercapacitors recharged from a specifically designed solar power module, the need to replace batteries is also eliminated and the system is completely autonomous and maintenance free. The “wEcoValve mote” firmware is based on a synchronous protocol that allows a bidirectional communication with a latency optimized for real-time work, with a synchronization time between nodes of 4 s, thus achieving a power consumption average of 2.9 mW.

Mathematics , 2011, DOI: 10.1016/j.jfa.2011.07.024
Abstract: We show that for any probability measure \mu there exists an equivalent norm on the space L^1(\mu) whose restriction to each reflexive subspace is uniformly smooth and uniformly convex, with modulus of convexity of power type 2. This renorming provides also an estimate for the corresponding modulus of smoothness of such subspaces.
