Abstract: Molecular characterization of one stable strain of Trypanosoma cruzi, the 21 SF, representative of the pattern of strains isolated from the endemic area of S o Felipe, State of Bahia, Brazil, maintained for 15 years in laboratory by serial passages in mice and classified as biodeme Type II and zymodeme 2 has been investigated. The kinetoplast DNA (kDNA) of parental strain, 5 clones and 14 subclones were analyzed. Schizodeme was established by comparative study of the fragments obtained from digestion of the 330-bp fragments amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from the variable regions of the minicicles, and digested by restriction endonucleases Rsa I and Hinf I. Our results show a high percentual of similarity between the restriction fragment lenght polymorphism (RFLP) for the parental strain and its clones and among these individual clones and their subclones at a level of 80 to 100%.This homology indicates a predominance of the same "principal clone" in the 21SF strain and confirms the homogeneity previously observed at biological and isozymic analysis. These results suggest the possibility that the T. cruzi strains with similar biological and isoenzymic patterns, circulating in this endemic area, are representative of one dominant clone. The presence of "principal clones" could be responsible for a predominant tropism of the parasites for specific organs and tissues and this could contribute to the pattern of clinico-pathological manifestations of Chagas's disease in one geographical area.

Abstract: in this work we use the igm, a model that describes well the energy flux in hadronic collisions, to study the leading particle spectrum when saturation effects on the gluon distribution function are included. the leading particle spectrum is calculated for several center of mass energies (?s). in the very high energy limit we compare our results with the predictions made in a recent paper, which also addresses the same problem.

Abstract: eucalyptus camaldulensis plants were established under four spacings and four fertilization levels at the savannah region in minas gerais, southeastern brazil, to evaluate the influence of these variables on dry matter production and distribution. the spacings consisted of 3 m between rows and 2, 3, 4 and 5 m between plants in the planting line. fertilizer levels consisted of a basic fertilization mixture denominated level zero and increasing levels denominated level one, two and four. the average dry weight production of above- and belowground components was evaluated at 20 and 32 months of age. regression equations were fitted using data obtained from the stand at 32 months of age. at this age, the average stemwood dry weight was 71%, 120% and 98% greater at fertilization levels one, two and four, respectively, when compared with plants growing at fertilization level zero. fertilization induced reduction of the root/aboveground dry matter relation. stemwood and total aboveground dry weight per plant increased with decreased stem density, being the highest at the 3 x 5 m spacing, while the highest production per unit area occurred at the smaller spacing. dry weight production presented a quadratic behavior and the greatest production per plant and per unit area was obtained between 2.7 and 2.8 fertilization levels.

Abstract: Background The demographic transition of populations from rural areas to large urban centers often results in a disordered occupation of forest remnants and increased economic pressure to develop high-income buildings in these areas. Ecological and socioeconomic factors associated with these urban transitions create conditions for the potential transmission of infectious diseases, which was demonstrated for Chagas disease. Methodology/Principal Findings We analyzed 930 triatomines, mainly Triatoma tibiamaculata, collected in artificial and sylvatic environments (forests near houses) of a suburban area of the city of Salvador, Bahia State, Brazil between 2007 and 2011. Most triatomines were captured at peridomiciles. Adult bugs predominated in all studied environments, and nymphs were scarce inside houses. Molecular analyses of a randomly selected sub-sample (n=212) of triatomines showed Trypanosoma cruzi infection rates of 65%, 50% and 56% in intradomestic, peridomestic and sylvatic environments, respectively. We detected the T. cruzi lineages I and II and mixed infections. We also showed that T. tibiamaculata fed on blood from birds (50%), marsupials (38%), ruminants (7%) and rodents (5%). The probability of T. cruzi infection was higher in triatomines that fed on marsupial blood (odds ratio (OR) = 1.95, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.22-3.11). Moreover, we observed a protective effect against infection in bugs that fed on bird blood (OR = 0.43, 95% CI = 0.30-0.73). Conclusions/Significance The frequent invasion of houses by infected triatomines indicates a potential risk of T. cruzi transmission to inhabitants in this area. Our results reinforce that continuous epidemiological surveillance should be performed in areas where domestic transmission is controlled but enzootic transmission persists.

Palavras-chave: modernidade, projeto moderno, crise, representa o do mundo.
