O CAMI O á COMPLEXIDADE: POR QUE A ECONOMíA DEBERíA SEGUIR á FíSICA
LUIS M. VARELA CABO,CARLOS J. RICOY RIEGO
Revista Galega de Economía , 2012,
Abstract: In this contribution we will show that the mainstream of contemporary economics, after its initial development in XIXth century analytical and conceptual framework of classical Physics, is still anchored to its conceptual core, the general equilibrium theory, neglecting the evolution of physics itself towards the treatment of complex systems, and even the nature of its own knowledge object. For that, after a short summary of classical physics formalism and of the own neoclassical economics, we will analyze the evolution of both disciplines throughout the last century, with particular attention being focused on the development of thermodynamics from its original equilibrium formalism until the formalization of the concept of dissipative structures in nonlinear thermodynamics. Finally, we outpoint some lines along which we consider the adaptation of economics to contemporary physics must be done.

Abstract: mucocele, usually associated to paranasal sinuses is defined as an abnormal accumulation and retention of mucous secretions. it usually presents with intraorbital or paranasal and rarely with pure neurological symptoms. we report a 41 years old male who presented with a history of supraorbital left headache, diplopia and proptosis. ct scans and magnetic resonance imaging showed an expansive mass in the right frontal sinus. the patient was operated, the presumptive preoperative clinical diagnosis of mucocele was confirmed and the lesion was drained. a postoperative ct scan confirmed the normal expansion of the frontal lobe

Complex networks analysis in socioeconomic models
Luis M. Varela,Giulia Rotundo,Marcel Ausloos,Jesus Carrete
Physics , 2014,
Abstract: This chapter aims at reviewing complex networks models and methods that were either developed for or applied to socioeconomic issues, and pertinent to the theme of New Economic Geography. After an introduction to the foundations of the field of complex networks, the present summary adds insights on the statistical mechanical approach, and on the most relevant computational aspects for the treatment of these systems. As the most frequently used model for interacting agent-based systems, a brief description of the statistical mechanics of the classical Ising model on regular lattices, together with recent extensions of the same model on small-world Watts-Strogatz and scale-free Albert-Barabasi complex networks is included. Other sections of the chapter are devoted to applications of complex networks to economics, finance, spreading of innovations, and regional trade and developments. The chapter also reviews results involving applications of complex networks to other relevant socioeconomic issues, including results for opinion and citation networks. Finally, some avenues for future research are introduced before summarizing the main conclusions of the chapter.

Abstract: the pituitary resistance to thyroid hormones (prth) is not very frequent and well-known entity, their treatment it continues being topic of controversy. in this work we have evaluated the quinagolida effectiveness in the treatment of it unites patient with (prth). the relationship among thyroid stimulating hormone (tsh) and free triiodothyronine (ft3) it was used as marker of the thyroid resistance and of the response to the treatment. the concentrations of tsh and ft3 were normalized after adding quinagolida to methimazole. these results suggest that the quinagolida could be an useful drug in the treatment of this pathology, next to the classic treatments

Revista de biología marina y oceanografía , 2009, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-19572009000300019
Abstract: in order to understand the processes that determine changes in zooplankton abundance and composition in the cariaco (carbon retention in a colored ocean) time series station, zooplankton biomass, composition and density were studied aboard the o/v hermano ginés from november 2002 to january 2003. salinity, temperature and dissolved oxygen were measured in situ. zooplankton samples were collected by vertical tows using a bongo net (mesh size 333 and 555 mm) at a speed of 2 knots at the intervals 0-30, 30-70, and 70-100 m. chlorophyll (chl a), zooplankton biomass (dry mass) and density were estimated. the maximum values of biomass (0.039 mg m-3 dry mass) and zooplankton density (582 ind. m-3) for the three strata were measured during the upwelling period. on the other hand, the lower values for these variables (0.030 ml m-3, 0.007 mg m-3 and 7 ind. m-3, respectively) were recorded in may 2003. in general, the greatest values were detected within the 30 to 70 m range. even though, the variability of the different strata was similar. the zooplankton community was dominated by copepods, cladocerans and appendicularians. the results showed a great temporal variability en zooplankton biomass and composition in spite of the fact that the station is located in a tropical area due to the effect of seasonal coastal upwelling.

Abstract: CYP2E1 enzyme is related to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) due to its ability for reactive oxygen species production, which can be influenced by polymorphisms in the gene. The aim of this study was to investigate hepatic levels, activity, and polymorphisms of the CYP2E1 gene to correlate it with clinical and histological features in 48 female obese NASH patients. Subjects were divided into three groups: (i) normal; (ii) steatosis; and (iii) steatohepatitis. CYP2E1 protein level was assayed in microsomes from liver biopsies, and in vivo chlorzoxazone hydroxylation was determined by HPLC. Genomic DNA was isolated for genotype analysis through PCR. The results showed that liver CYP2E1 content was significantly higher in the steatohepatitis (45%; p=0.024) and steatosis (22%; p=0.032) group compared with normal group. Chlorzoxazone hydroxylase activity showed significant enhancement in the steatohepatitis group (15%, p=0.027) compared with the normal group. c2 rare allele of RsallPstl polymorphisms but no C allele of Dral polymorphism was positively associated with CHZ hydroxylation, which in turn is correlated with liver CYP2E1 content (r=0.59; p=0.026). In conclusion, c2 allele is positively associated with liver injury in NASH. This allele may determine a higher transcriptional activity of the gene, with consequent enhancement in pro-oxidant activity of CYP2E1 thus affording liver toxicity
