Parábolas, parabólicas: testagens genéticas preditivas, constru??es sociais de risco e a rela??o profissionais da saúde/meios de comunica??o de massa
Castiel, Luis David;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59701998000200003
Abstract: the article examines conceptual topics underlying construction of the "new public health" and epidemiology, particularly its molecular branch and the idea of genetic risk, in the face of issues raised by new technologies, globalization, today?s vast increase in communication strategies, and the weakening of identity links. problems related to the creation of new interdisciplinary fields are also considered, such as epidemiology and molecular genetics. the repercussions of the social communication of genetic contents (especially predictive genetic testing and the cloning of mammals) are also analyzed.
Vivendo entre exposi??es e agravos: a teoria da relatividade do risco
Castiel, Luis David;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 1996, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59701996000200003
Abstract: the paper addresses conceptual and theoretical aspects of the construction of the category 'risk' within disciplines related to safety engineering, epidemiology, and actuary sciences. the role of molecular biology is highlighted in particular. repercussions are examined not only in psychological and sociocultural terms but also from the perspective of social communication. relations between the notions of risk, life style, and late modernity are also discussed. lastly, the multiple dimensions of the idea of the 'relativity' of a risk are considered: this construct is produced within a particular era; it is tied in with a certain view of the world and of human experience, thereby influencing theoretical and methodological approaches.
Uma saúde pública molecular!?
Castiel, Luis David;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 1994, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X1994000300002
Abstract: this article focuses on the relationship between public health and molecular genetics. both the notion of public health and correlate expressions are discussed in an attempt to establish their respective objects of investigation and fields of practice. in addition, a brief description is given of the precarious health conditions in brazil. the author remarks on the limited social effectiveness of the role ascribed to public health professionals in brazil. techniques and concepts developed by molecular genetics are presented and their importance for public health is analyzed. genetic risk is discussed and compared to the idea of inherited disposition to disease, with special emphasis on ethical and epistemological points of view. the notion of expert is considered in terms of its adequacy for training health professionals to deal with issues pertaining to molecular biology and human genetics in public health matters. lastly, the author argues for the role of the state in defining social priorities in health.
O técnico e as necessidades em saúde
Castiel, Luis David;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 1985, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X1985000100003
Abstract: this paper discusses the restraints that interfere on the activities of public health technical personnel on the identification of brazilians' health needs. it is suggested that centralized decision making taken by the state on health policies suits the interests of health entrepreneurs pharmaceutical and medical equipment industries. actually, these groups restrict the way that public health technical personnel identify health needs, which are going to be insufficiently met by health institutions.
Considera??es acerca da utiliza??o da epidemiologia na avalia??o dos sistemas de saúde
Castiel, Luis David;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 1986, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X1986000200006
Abstract: a discussion about possible reasons why epidemiologic methods are not widely used in evaluation of health actions in brazil is developed. firstly, ways by means public health evaluation can be performed are presented. then, the role of epidemiologg in outcome assessment of health programmes is shown. finally, restraints and difficulties to perform outcome evaluation of such programmes are considered.
O epidemiologista e os servi?os de saúde coletiva no Brasil
Castiel, Luis David;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 1989, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X1989000100003
Abstract: the paper analyses the current epidemiological practices and procedures adopted in brazilian public health services. selected topics, as the training of epidemiologists and the adverse conditions that prevent a wider utilization of sound epidemiological techniques are discussed. a model ilustrating the health-disease process is offered, as an aid to epidemiologists.
Apocalypse... Now? Molecular epidemiology, predictive genetic tests, and social communication of genetic contents
Castiel, Luis David;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X1999000500009
Abstract: the author analyzes the underlying theoretical aspects in the construction of the molecular watershed of epidemiology and the concept of genetic risk, focusing on issues raised by contemporary reality: new technologies, globalization, proliferation of communications strategies, and the dilution of identity matrices. he discusses problems pertaining to the establishment of such new interdisciplinary fields as molecular epidemiology and molecular genetics. finally, he analyzes the repercussions of the social communication of genetic content, especially as related to predictive genetic tests and cloning of animals, based on triumphal, deterministic metaphors sustaining beliefs relating to the existence and supremacy of concepts such as 'purity', 'essence', and 'unification' of rational, integrated 'i's/egos'.
The next millennium and epidemiology: searching for information
Castiel, Luis David;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X1998000400018
Abstract: on the eve of the new millennium, it has become 'natural' to admit the emergence of tendencies to perform evaluations and inventories of the past and attempts to forecast future scenarios. while recognizing the ensuing uncertainties, the current paper takes this point of view as the point of departure for proposing a discussion on the future directions and prospects of epidemiology. based on the pertinent analyses performed by the sussers (father and son), i approach and discuss the scope and limits of new aspects assumed by the field, especially to the extent that it has included techniques and instruments from bioinformatics and molecular biology. in the latter areas (amongst many others), the notion of information has gained enormous importance. i then proceed to analyze the conceptual origins and shifts in this notion, in addition to possible repercussions and effects on the field of biological sciences in general and their research practices in particular.
O estresse na pesquisa epidemiológica: o desgaste dos modelos de explica??o coletiva do processo saúde-doen?a
Castiel, Luis David;
Physis: Revista de Saúde Coletiva , 1993, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-73311993000100005
Abstract: the article focuses on the difficulties the epidemiological instrument faces when dealing wih questions posed by contemporary health problems, in which the concept of stress finds broad diffusion. thus there is a discus-sion about the theoretical-concepual framework of the theory of stress and its developments. besides, the text points out the limitation of the method and of the available epidemiological models when they talk about: 1 - manifesta-tions whose predicability cannot be delimited; 2 - phenomena placed in different hierarchic leveis. in such cases, the theorization underlying the noion of risk, used to explain sikliness at the individual levei proves to be insufficient. the complexity of the health'illness process demands another epistemological paradigm which allaws the subjec of the epidemiological research develop other ways of demarcating and understanding its object.
