Which Patients Should be Administrated Prophylactic Antibacterial Agents? A Study of Bacteriuria or Funguria by Urine Culture Taken From the Renal Pelvis in Children with Ureteropelvic Junction Obstruction  [PDF]

Abstract: Objective: To detect bacteriuria or funguria by urine culture taken from the renal pelvis directly before Anderson-Hynes pyeloplasty. Methods: 290 patients who underwent Anderson-Hynes pyeloplasty for ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) were included in a retrospective analysis. Urine was obtained directly before the renal pelvis was opened, and was carried to the laboratory for bacterial culture. Clinical features were analyzed to evaluate risk factors for bacteriuria or funguria by comparing patients whose urine yielded positive cultures to those whose urine cultures were negative for bacteria or yeast. Results: Eighteen patients (6.2%) had positive urine cultures, including six cultures positive for Escherichia coli (E. coli), four for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, three for klebsiella pneumoniae, one for maltophilia monad, one for Enterococcus faecium, one for Candida albicans, one for Candida parapsilosis, and one for yeast not otherwise specified. Bacteriuria or funguria was significantly correlated with four clinical features: fever, urinary urgency, and history of nephrostomy or pyeloplasty. Conclusions: Bacteriuria or funguria was less common in children with UPJO, and the majority of organisms were identified as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, or Klebsiella pneumoniae. Prophylactic antibacterial agents were probably necessary in those patients who had signs of urinary tract infection (UTI), or history of nephrostomy or pyeloplasty.

Aim: Common treatment options for obesity include a reduced-calorie diet, increased physical activity, behavioral modification, pharmacotherapy, and surgery. Ear acupressure may also be an effective adjunct therapy. Methods: This study used a randomized controlled design to test the effectiveness of auricular acupressure for weight reduction in young, Taiwanese adults with a BMI ≥ 23 kg/m2. Sixty-eight participants aged 18 to 20 years were recruited from Taiwanese universities at the beginning of the study. After four weeks of auricular therapy, the total sample included 57 young adults. All participants met one time per week for ten minutes. The treatment group received ear acupressure treatment with Semen Vaccariae sticks on auricular acupoints while the control group had adhesive tape placed on ear acupoints, change in BMI from baseline to trial completion. Results: BMI in controls increased significantly by +0.0133 kg/m2 (P = 0.000) while the intervention group BMI decreased significantly by ?0.8022 kg/m2 (P ≤ 0.0001). Conclusions: Just four weeks of auricular acupressure by Semen Vaccariae, sticks may significantly help to decrease BMI among young adults.

Synthesis and Field Emission Properties of Carbon Nanowire-Single Walled Carbon Nanotube Networks Hybrid Films  [PDF]

Carbon nanowire (CNW)-singlewalled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) networks hybrid films with a large area (~400 mm2) are grown on molybdenum (Mo) layers by microwave plasma chemical vapour deposition system. The Mo layers, which were deposited on Al2O3 ceramic substrates through electron beam evaporation deposition, were pretreated by a laser-grooving (LG) technology. Furthermore, the surface morphology, micro-structure and field emission properties of these samples are characterized by scanning electron microscope, Raman spectra, and field emission I - V measurements. ACNW-SWCNT networks hybrid film was formed in the surface of Mo layer, but the laser etched area (linear pits array area) the distribution of the CNW-SWCNT networks density is lower than the un-etched area CNW-SWCNT networks distribution density. The diameter of the CNWs and SWCNTs, respectively in the 8 - 15 nm and 0.9 - 1.5 nm range, and the length of CNW-SWCNTs ranges from 1 μm to 4 μm. The growth mechanisms of the films were discussed. Effects of LG pretreatment on surface morphologies and microstructure of the hybrid films were investigated. The field electron emission experimental results shown that the ture on field as low as 1.6 V/μm, and a current density of 0.15 mA/cm2 at an electric field of 4.3 V/μm was obtained.

Selecting and Combining Classifiers Simultaneously with Particle Swarm Optimization

Abstract: A weighted combination model of multiple classifier systems based on Particle Swarm Optimization was reviewed, which took sum rule and majority vote as special cases. It was observed that the rejection of weak classifier in the combination model can improve classification performance. Inspired by this observation, we presented a problem that how to choose the useful classifiers in a given ensemble, especially in the reviewed model. In this study, a combination algorithm was proposed, which implemented classifiers’ selection and combination simultaneously with particle swarm optimization. We describe the implementation details, including particles encoding and fitness evaluation. Nine data sets from UCI Machine Learning Repository were used in the experiment to justify the validity of the method. Experimental results show that the propose model obtained the best performance on 5 out of 9 data sets, and averagely outperforms the reviewed model, majority voting, max rule, min rule, mean rule, median rule and product rule. The results were analysed from the point of the characteristic of data set.
Enhancement and selective production of avermectin B by recombinants of Streptomyces avermitilis via intraspecific protoplast fusion

Abstract: Among eight components of avermectin, B1 fractions have the most effective antiparasitic activities and the lowest level of toxic side-effects and are used widely in veterinary and agricultural fields. Intraspecific protoplast fusion between two strains of Streptomyces avermitilis, one an avermectin high producer (strain 76-05) and the other a genetically engineered strain containing the mutations aveD and olmA (strain 73-12) was performed for enhancement and selective production of avermectin B in the absence of oligomycin. Two recombinant strains (F23 and F29) were isolated and characterized with regards to the parental merits. F23 and F29 produced only the four avermectin B components with high yield and produced no oligomycin. The avermectin production of F23 and F29 was about 84.20% and 103.45% of the parental strain 76-05, respectively, and increased about 2.66-fold and 3.50-fold, respectively, compared to that of parental strain 73-12. F23 and F29 were genetically stable prototrophic recombinants and F29 was quite tolerant of fermentation conditions compared to avermectin high producer parental strain 76-05. The ability to produce avermectin B with high yield without the production of other avermectin components and oligomycin will make F23 and F29 useful strains for avermectin production. Strain F29’s tolerance of fermentation conditions will also make it suitable for industrial applications.

Compact Reconfigurable UWB Antenna Integrated with Stepped Impedance Stub Loaded Resonators and Switches

Abstract: A compact reconfigurable antenna integrated with stepped impedance stub (SIS) loaded stepped impedance resonator (SIR) and SIS loaded hexagon stepped impedance resonator (HSIR) for ultra wideband (UWB) applications is proposed in this paper. The reconfigurable UWB antenna can work as a UWB antenna and a dual notch band UWB antenna by controlling the switches ON and OFF. The proposed two notch bands are obtained by embedding a SIS-HSIR on hexagon radiation patch and a SIS-SIR on coplanar waveguide (CPW) excitation line. The reconfigurable characteristic is achieved by means of two ideal switches. The proposed reconfigurable antenna has been designed, fabricated and measured. The experimental results show that the proposed reconfigurable antenna has a multi-mode function and good omni-directional characteristics.

Cloning and Sequencing Analysis of Glycosidase in Silurus meridionalis

Abstract: In order to clone the gluckinase gene in Silurus meridionalis, specific primers to glucokinase gene were designed according to the conserved regions of amino acids of glucokinase gene structure that have been reported. Encoding glucokinase cDNA framents were amplified by RT-PCR from the total RNA in the hepatopancreas. The PCR products were ligated into pMD-18 vector, which was transformed into E. codi DH5a. Positive bacteria clones were screened and identified by PCR. The sequence of glucokinase gene fragment was also determined and analyzed . Compared with Cyprinus carpio,the homology of the clone S. meridionalis glucokinase was 83%. The sequences of S. meridionalis and other species were used by NJ bootstrap with Phylip for the purpose of establishing the evolutionary relationship of GK. The sequence of S. meridionalis and Ctenopahryngodon idellus, Cyprinus carpio, Carassius auratus, Eruthrculter ilishaeformis, Oncorhynchus mykiss,Salmo,Sparus aurata, Rhabdosargus sarba forms a branch. The glucokinase gene fragment was successfully cloned whose length was 688 bp from the hepatopancreas of S. meridionalis. This can lay the groundwork for cloning the full-length gene. It also build a solid foundation for the sutdy of gluckinase of S. meridionalis in the different nutrition.
Notes on the genus Byssosphaeria (Melanommataceae) from China

Abstract: The genus Byssosphaeria from China was briefly reviewed based on specimen examinations and literature work. Taxonomic and nomenclatural problems are discussed. Among the previously recorded taxa of the genus, a new combination, Byssosphaeria hainanensis, is made and a new Chinese record, B. alnea, is reported. A key to the known species of the genus in China is provided.
