Raman Spectrum of Epitaxial Graphene on SiC (0001) by Pulsed Electron Irradiation

Abstract: We report new Raman features of epitaxial graphene (EG) on Si-face 4H-SiC prepared by pulsed electron irradiation (PEI). With increasing graphene layers, frequencies of G and 2D peaks show blue-shifts and approach those of bulk highly-oriented pyrolytic graphite. It is indicated that the EG is slightly tension strained and tends to be strain-free. Meanwhile, single Lorentzian line shapes are well fitted to the 2D peaks of EG on SiC(0001) and their full widths at half maximum decrease with the increasing graphene layers, which indicates that the multilayer EG on Si-face can also contain turbostratic stacking by our PEI route instead of only AB Bernal stacking by a traditional thermal annealing method. It is worth noting that the stacking style plays an important role on the charge carrier mobility. Therefore our findings will be a candidate for growing quality graphene with high carrier mobility both on the Si- and C-terminated SiC substrate. Mechanisms behind the features are studied and discussed.
Endophytic Pestalotiopsis from the main pine species in Sichuan

Abstract: One hundred and ninety-nine isolates of endophytic Pestalotiopsis were isolated from 2,400 tissue masses of healthy branches, leaves and stems of five species of pine in Sichuan, and 11 species were identified based on morphological characteristics and ITS sequences. The average isolation rates of endophytic Pestalotiopsis was 8.29%. P. uvicola and P. gaurae were dominant among the 11 species, which were firstly recorded on pines in Sichuan. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on ITS sequences indicated that there were some genetic differences among these endophytic Pestalotiopsis species, and part of them were highly homologeneous with the pathogenic Pestalotiopsis.
Modified Recombinant Proteins Can Be Exported via the Sec Pathway in Escherichia coli

Abstract: The correct folding of a protein is a pre-requirement for its proper posttranslational modification. The Escherichia coli Sec pathway, in which preproteins, in an unfolded, translocation-competent state, are rapidly secreted across the cytoplasmic membrane, is commonly assumed to be unfavorable for their modification in the cytosol. Whether posttranslationally modified recombinant preproteins can be efficiently transported via the Sec pathway, however, remains unclear. ACP and BCCP domain (BCCP87) are carrier proteins that can be converted into active phosphopantetheinylated ACP (holo-ACP) and biotinylated-BCCP (holo-BCCP) by AcpS and BirA, respectively. In the present study, we show that, when ACP or BCCP87 is fused to the C-terminus of secretory protein YebF or MBP, the resulting fusion protein preYebF-ACP, preYebF-BCCP87, preMBP-ACP or preMBP-BCCP87 can be modified and then secreted. Our data demonstrate that posttranslational modification of preYebF-ACP, preYebF-BCCP87 preMBP-ACP and preMBP-BCCP87 can take place in the cytosol prior to translocation, and the Sec machinery accommodates these previously modified fusion proteins. High levels of active holo-ACP and holo-BCCP87 are achieved when AcpS or BirA is co-expressed, especially when sodium azide is used to retard their translocation across the inner membrane. Our results also provide an alternative to achieve a high level of modified recombinant proteins expressed extracellularly.

Abstract: As a new kind of teaching aid, Interactive whiteboard combines the strengths of traditional blackboard writing and modern multimedia teaching function. It has begun to receive more and more attention and applications in Chinese educational system. By reviewing literature related to interactive whiteboard in education during the period of 2004-2011, the paper analyzed the studies on interactive whiteboard from three perspectives: teaching theory, teaching practice and users of interactive whiteboard. Based on the literature review and analysis, the paper proposed some suggestions and hopefully these suggestions could shed some lights on the better application of interactive whiteboard in education in the near future.

Abstract: Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy (CAA) occurs commonly among the elderly and almost invariably in patients with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). The β-amyloid peptides (Aβ) are produced via the amy-loidogenic processing of β-Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP) by β-secretase-1 (BACE1) and γ- secretase. Vascular endothelial cells are lately shown to possess the molecular machinery of Aβ production, which might participate in the development of CAA. Hypercholesterolemia is considered a risk factor for AD, whereas less is known if cholesterol may modulate endothelial Aβ production. In the present study we verified the amyloidogenic capability of Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVECs) in vitro and explored the effect of cholesterol exposure on their amy-loidogenic potential. Cholesterol treatments at 12.5 and 25 mg/dL significantly elevated APP, BACE1 and APP β-CTF protein levels and β-site APP cleavage activity in cell lysates, and Aβ40 levels in culture medium. However, coincubation with cholesterol at 50 and 100 mg/dL attenuated the viability of the cultured cells and diminished their amyloidogenic capability. These findings suggest that high cholesterol exposure is stressful to vascular endothelial cells, and at a certain dosage range can promote an amyloidogenic response in these cells.
Global existence of periodic solutions in a simplified four-neuron BAM neural network model with multiple delays

Abstract: We consider a simplified bidirectional associated memory (BAM) neural network model with four neurons and multiple time delays. The global existence of periodic solutions bifurcating from Hopf bifurcations is investigated by applying the global Hopf bifurcation theorem due to Wu and Bendixson's criterion for high-dimensional ordinary differential equations due to Li and Muldowney. It is shown that the local Hopf bifurcation implies the global Hopf bifurcation after the second critical value of the sum of two delays. Numerical simulations supporting the theoretical analysis are also included.

Abstract: We first study the distribution of the zeros of a fourth-degree exponential polynomial. Then we apply the obtained results to a simplified bidirectional associated memory (BAM) neural network with four neurons and multiple time delays. By taking the sum of the delays as the bifurcation parameter, it is shown that under certain assumptions the steady state is absolutely stable. Under another set of conditions, there are some critical values of the delay, when the delay crosses these critical values, the Hopf bifurcation occurs. Furthermore, some explicit formulae determining the stability and the direction of periodic solutions bifurcating from Hopf bifurcations are obtained by applying the normal form theory and center manifold reduction. Numerical simulations supporting the theoretical analysis are also included.
