Sexual Teasing in Chinese Entertaining TV Programs

Abstract: Humor is a shared characteristic of human beings. Among various kinds of humor, teasing is one of the most risky forms. Teasing related to sex is even more sensitive in most cultures. As is learned in previous studies, females tease less than males in general and both males and females tend to tease males more than females. It is due to the power difference and social asymmetry between different genders. This phenomenon is what has been found in natural occurrence of teasing. However, it is not the case in entertaining TV programs. We examined two Chinese TV talk shows, and found that the hostess is as aggressive as the host when making sexual teasing towards guests. Furthermore, the host/hostess does not consider the gender of the guests when teasing them about sexuality. That is in contrast with the natural occurrence. The explanation to this difference can be attributed to the asymmetrical power between hosts/hostesses and guests in the entertaining TV programs. Key words: sexual teasing, gender, power, entertaining TV programs Résumé: L’humour est une caractéristique partagée des êtres humains. Parmi les diverses sortes d’humour, la taquinerie est une des formes les plus risquées. La taquinerie relative au sexe est même plus sensible dans la plupart des cultures. D’après les études précédentes, on sais que les femmes taquinent généralement moins que les hommes, et que tous tendent à taquiner les hommes plut t que les femmes. Cela est d à la différence de puissance et à l’asymétrie sociale entre les deux sexes. C’est ce qu’on a trouvé dans la taquinerie naturelle. Mais ce n’est pas le cas dans les programmes télévisés de divertissement. Après avoir examiné deux talk show télévisés chinois, nous avons trouvé que l’animatrice est aussi agressive que l’animateur quand ils taquinent les invités. De plus, l’animateur ne considère pas le sexe des invités en taquinant sur la sexualité. C’est contraire à la situation normale. Cette différence est attribuée à l’asymétrie de puissance entre l’animateur et les invités dans les programmes télévisés de divertissement. Mots-Clés: taquinerie sexuelle, sexe, puissance, programmes télévisés de divertissement 摘要:幽默是人類所共有的特點。在各種形式的幽默中,嘲弄是最冒險的形式之一。在大多數文化裏,與性有關的嘲弄尤為敏感。以往的研究中曾經提到,一般來說,同女性相比,嘲弄更容易發生在男性身上;而不論對女性還是對男性而言,他(她)們的嘲弄對象多是男性。這是由於兩性之間的力量差異以及社會地位不對稱性所造成的。這一特點是由在自然情況下發生的嘲弄現象中所總結出來的。然而,在電視娛樂節目中卻不儘然。本文對兩個中國電視脫口秀節目進行了研究,發現在對嘉賓進行“性”嘲弄的時候,女主持人在攻擊性方面與男主持人不相上下。另外,男女主持人在進行“性”嘲弄的時候並沒有刻意考慮嘉賓的性別。這些現象與自然情況下十分不同。這種差異可以由電視娛樂節目中主持人和嘉賓之間不對稱的力量關係來解釋。 關鍵詞:“性”嘲弄;性別;力量;電視娛樂節目
Exploring the Useful Reading Strategies among EFL College Students in Taiwan*  [PDF]

Abstract: The major purpose of this study was to understand what the reading strategies the EFL students use more or less among EFL college students in Taiwan. The study focused on three hundred and ninety-eight EFL college students coming from seven colleges located in the north, central, and south Taiwan. The research instrument was a questionnaire modified from Wan-Yin Lin’s Chinese reading strategies questionnaire (2005). The collected data used the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 13.0 to analyze the results. The findings of study included the following: first, higher grade students had more variety in using reading strategies than lower grade students; and second, the higher grade students tended to use integrated strategies more than lower grade students. According to the research findings, the researcher provided some recommendations, such as teachers could be better guiders to help students understand the importance of reading in language learning. They can not just focus on teaching listening and speaking, and should enhance the balance development in integrated reading strategies that helped students could read fluently any English materials.
Elevated serum alpha fetoprotein levels promote pathological progression of hepatocellular carcinoma

Abstract: AIM: To investigate the biological role of alpha fetoprotein (AFP) and its clinical significance in carcinogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: Clinical analysis of HCC patients and immunohistochemical examination were conducted to evaluate the relationship between serum AFP level and patient mortality. Confocal microscopy, Western blotting, dimethylthiahzolyl-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide, Cell Counting Kit-8 assays and flow cytometry were performed to explore the possible mechanism. RESULTS: Among the 160 HCC patients enrolled in this study, 130 patients survived 2 years (81.25%), with a survival rate of 86.8% in AFP < 2 0 μg/L group, 88.9% in AFP 20-250 μg/L group, and 69.6% in AFP > 250 μg/L group, demonstrating a higher mortality rate in HCC patients with higher AFP levels. Surgical treatment was beneficial only in patients with low AFP levels. The mortality rate of HCC patients with high AFP levels who were treated surgically was apparently higher than those treated with conservative management. The results of immunohistochemistry showed that AFP and AFP receptor were merely expressed in tissues of HCC patients with positive serum AFP. Consistently, in vitro analysis showed that AFP and AFPS were expressed in HepG2 but not in HLE cells. AFP showed a capability to promote cell growth, and this was more apparent in HepG2 cells, in which the proliferation was increased by 3.5 folds. Cell cycle analysis showed that the percentage of HepG2 cells in S phase after exposure to AFP was modestly increased. CONCLUSION: HCC patients with higher AFP levels show a higher mortality rate, which appears to be attributable to the growth promoting properties of AFP.

Abstract: In the crystal of the title compound, C17H17N3O2, the molecules exist in the keto–enamine form. The pyrazole ring is oriented at 10.59 (4) and 57.98 (5)° to the phenyl and furyl rings, respectively, and the dihedral angle between phenyl and furyl rings is 73.30 (11)°. An intramolecular N—H...O hydrogen bond occurs between imino and carbonyl groups. In the crystal, weak C—H...O hydrogen bonds link the molecules into supramolecular chains along the b axis.
Alpha-1 antitrypsin is a potential biomarker for hepatitis B

Abstract: To identify the major proteins in the progression of HBV infection from mild stage to severe stage.We performed an integrated strategy by combining two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE), peptide mass fingerprinting (PMF) analysis, and tissue microarray techniques to screen the functional proteins and detect the localization of those proteins.Interestingly, MS/MS identification revealed the expression level of alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) was significantly elevated in serum samples from patients with severe chronic hepatitis. Immunoblotting with a specific AAT antibody confirmed that AAT is highly expressed in serum samples from patients with hepatic carcinoma and severe chronic hepatitis. Furthermore, we observed that AAT is with highest expression in normal tissue and cells, but lowest in hepatic carcinoma and severe chronic hepatitis tissues and cells, suggesting the specific secretion of AAT from tissues and cells to serum.These results suggest the possibility of AAT as a potential biomarker for hepatitis B in diagnosis.Alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) is the most prominent protease inhibitor in human serum. Abstract: Tao-Hong-Si-Wu-Tang (THSWT) is a famous traditional Chinese herbal medicine formula which has traditionally been used in China for about 1000 years. The previous studies have shown that THSWT had anti-fatigue effects but the mechanisms are scanty. The present study was designed to evaluate anti-fatigue mechanisms of THSWT through determining the change of glucose and lipid metabolism. The rats were randomly divided into four groups: Sedentary Control group (SC); Exercise Control group (EC): Sedentary plus THSWT Treated group (STT) and Exercise plus THSWT Treated group (ETT). Rats in the STT and ETT groups received 20 mL kg-1 BW of THSWT solutions. After 28 days, rats in the EC and ETT groups were forced to swim for 90 min with a load (5% BW). The results showed that THSWT could improve blood glucose levels of rats during exercise as well as increase the liver and muscle glycogen contents while decreasing the plasma Free-Fatty Acid (FFA) levels. The anti-fatigue mechanisms of THSWT might be related to the improvement in the metabolic control of exercise and the activation of energy metabolism.
The Effects of Resveratrol Supplementation on Exercise-Induced Apoptosis of Rat Hepatocytes

Abstract: The present study was designed to determine the effects of resveratrol supplementation on exercise-induced apoptosis of rat hepatocytes. The rats were divided randomly into the sedentary group (Group I) and exhaustive exercise groups (Group I-IV). Each group contains 12 animals. The rats of exhaustive exercise groups received daily oral administration of resveratrol at doses of 0, 200 or 400 mg/kg/day for 30 days. The rats of sedentary group received daily oral administration of vehicle only (10 mL/kg/day) for the same period. Exhaustive exercise was performed on a motor-driven rodent treadmill. Paraffin-embedded liver sections were stained using the Streptavidin Peroxidase (SP) immunohistochemistry technique for BAX and Bcl-2 detection. The results showed that exhausting exercises could make the expression of BAX proteins in the liver and BAX/Bcl-2 ratio dramatically increases, the expression of Bcl-2 proteins obviously decreases. After resveratrol supplementation, the expression of BAX proteins and BAX/Bcl-2 ratio obviously decreased, the expression of Bcl-2 proteins obviously increased. Which indicated that resveratrol supplementation can inhibit exercise-induced apoptosis of rat hepatocytes.
An endmember progressive extraction algorithm for hyperspectral remote sensing image

Abstract: In circumstance when there are no pure pixels exits in hyperspectral image, the endmembers extracted by traditional algorithms are usuallymixing ones stil.l In order to solve the problem, this paperproposes an endmemberextraction algorithm based on the re-analysis ofnear-endmemberusing the linearmixingmode.l After extracting the pixelswhichweremost close to the pure endmembers in the image, using the convex polyhedron s geometric characters the algorithm searches the pixels around the near- endmemberand finds out the pixels in the edge of the convex polyhedron formed by the pure endmembers. Calculating themixing coefficients of every endmember in these pixels by the laws of sins, thus, with these coefficients the pure endmember vectors could be extracted according to the constraints of linearmixing mode.l A hyperspectral image simulated by the real spectrums is used to investigate the performance of the algorithm. Abstract: In the background of study on activity regularity of the sun-earth system,simulation and forecast for space weather,this paper proposed a new virtual platform for the collaborative work among large-scale scientific computing models,DHPA,which is based on the CCA specifications in the large-scale scientific computing field.Adopting the service oriented design solutions,DHPA solved the problems exposed on the existed space weather framework SWMF in the aspects of modeling,integrating,deploying,managing,inter-operating,etc.DHPA bright a new framework solution to space weather scientific computing and simulating,also it could be referred in the designing of other disciplinary large-scale scientific computing modeling framework.
