Abstract: detailed mechanical analyses were made in 27 agricultural limestones and in one slag, with commercial grades, which are used as soil amendments. the mechanical analyses were made by wet sieving with 9 standard sieves n.° 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 70, 100, 140, and 200 (u.s.b.s. sieve number). to compare and interpret the particle distribution of sieve analyses, simple statistical criteria were utilized (first and third quartiles, sorting coefficient and quartile geometric standard deviation) and graphic representation was made in a mono log plot. some samples showed great variation in fineness but most of the agricultural limestones have similar degrees of fineness, i. e., 20-30% particle diameter larger than 0.8 mm (sieve n.° 20) and 25-35% diameter smaller than 0.15 mm (sieve n.° 100). the results demonstrated also that samples have maximum selection for coarse particles. in most of the samples the coarse particles were represented by diameters larger than 0.3 mm (sieve n.° 50) in a proportion which varies from 50 to 60%.

Abstract: in the plow layer (0-20cm) of well drained low activity clay soils (mostly oxisols and ultisols) under "cwa" tropical climate and long term cropped with cotton (42 sites) or sugarcane (45 sites), organic matter (y) was found to be similarly and highly related to soil texture. best relations were found with clay (<2μ) plus silt (2-20μ) contents (x); (y = 0.773 + 0.0325x; r = 0.810***). a classification of soil organic matter contents, into low, medium and high levels, with different values for four major textural classes is suggested. ranges of medium levels of organic matter suggested were: 0.6 to 1.2% for sand and sandy loam; 1.0 to 1.8% for sandy loam and sandy clay loam; 1.5 to 2.8% for sandy clay and clay; 2.4 to 3.8% for heavy clay.

Abstract: the relationships between soil, geology and geomorphic surface were studied in the marins basin of piracicaba, s.p., brazil. soils, parent material, geology and geomorphic surfaces were mapped. two transects were studied to verify the lateral variation of the soils. geology derives from neo-cenozoic superficial deposits of a loamy sand texture, sandstone belonging to the piramboia formation of the s?o bento group, with siltstones and shales belonging to the corumbatai formation of the passa dois group, and colluvial and alluvial sediments. five geomorphic surfaces were identified. the relationships between soil, parent material, geology and geomorphic surfaces were performed cross-referencing the different maps. these relations were analyzed by comparision to an "uniformity index", specialy developed to verify the inter-relation uniformity. ten soil units were identified (oxisol, ultisol and inceptisol orders). the oxisol is related to the neocenozoic cover and surface i, were the relief is almost flat. the ultisol, with a predominance of a sandy loam texture, is related to the pirambóia formation sandstone and to surfaces ii and iii, with gentle slopes. the incepstisol, with a clayey texture, are associated to the corumbataí formation siltstone and silex, with iv and v surfaces (ondulating relief). the incepitsols of varied textures are related to alluvium and colluvium deposits.the relation that exists between the soils and the geomorphic surfaces is represented by the tendency that, the older and more stable the surface is, more homogeous it is in relation to the soils formed on it. the relation established in this area of study, is repeated in the landscape in other locations of the basin with soil, relief and lithological characteristics similar to the ones of the studied area. this shows that the relations established in this area can be extrapolated to other, contibuting in this way to future soils surveys that could be perfomed in this basin.

Abstract: The prime objective of this article is to investigate, through a multi-case study of five organizations from Brazil's Federal District, the operational level participation in the formulation phase of the strategic process and integration of these professionals with other hierarchical levels in organizations. Based on the theoretical referential that the conception of strategy and the strategic process is a reality built in an interactive and contextual manner, we opted for an exploratory qualitative research to investigate and analyze the data collected from the statements of interviewees. The results of this research reveal that although higher hierarchical levels (strategic and tactic) regard the participation of operational level professionals as vitally important to formulate the strategic process, in effect, that occurs in a limited fashion. Top management in organizations involves these professionals at various stages of the process, and neglects them in others. This omission can compromise the entire cycle of the strategic process and, consequently, the results to be obtained from it. In all studied organizations, there was no power distribution to allow for active participation - the highly political and traditional structure does not permit said activity. The primary finding of this study is to demonstrate that the importance of the operational level in the strategic process is not sufficient to drive excessively hierarchical organizations to grant them true participation.

Abstract: a multilocus mixed-mating model was used to evaluate the mating system of a population of couratari multiflora, an emergent tree species found in low densities (1 individual/10 ha) in lowland forests of central amazonia. we surveyed and observed phenologically 41 trees in an area of 400 ha. from these, only four mother trees were analyzed here because few of them set fruits, which also suffered high predation. no difference was observed between the population multilocus outcrossing rate (tmp = 0.953 ± 0.040) and the average single locus rate (tsp = 0.968 ± 0.132). the four mother trees were highly outcrossed (tm ~ 1). two out of five loci showed departures from the hardy-weinberg equilibrium (hwe) expectations, and the same results occurred with the mixed-mating model. besides the low number of trees analyzed, the proportion of loci in hwe suggests random mating in the population. however, the pollen pool was heterogeneous among families, probably due to both the small sample number and the flowering of trees at different times of the flowering season. reproductive phenology of the population and the results presented here suggest, at least for part of the population, a long-distance pollen movement, around 1,000 m.
