Ex situ symbiotic seed germination, isolation and identification of effective symbiotic fungus in Cymbidium mannii (Orchidaceae)

Abstract: Aims The in situ and ex situ seed baiting techniques, which have been developed in recent years, are effective methods to study the compatible mycorrhizal fungi of orchids. Our aim was to obtain the compatible mycorrhizal fungi of epiphytic Cymbidium mannii using the ex situ seed baiting technique. Methods Bark, moss, litter and humus around the roots of adult plants of C. mannii were collected as substrate to cultivate C. mannii seeds in the laboratory. The fungi were isolated from developed protocorms and identified by morphological and molecular characteristics. The effects of different mycorrhizal fungi and light on seed germination were examined by in vitro symbiotic germination. Important findings The isolated fungus was identified as a species of the genus Epulorhiza and was named as FCb4. After 58 days cultivation, seeds inoculated with FCb4 strain and FDaI7 strain (Tulasnella, isolated from Dendrobium aphyllum) had a high germination ratio, whereas seeds without the fungus failed to germinate. There was no significant difference between the germination ratios of seeds inoculated with FCb4 and FDaI7 strains, but FCb4 was significantly superior for seedling formation and development compared with FDaI7 in light. This indicated a lower degree of symbiotic fungal specificity on seed germination than the protocorm development stage in C. mannii. The fungus we obtained was effective for seed germination, and protocorm and seedling development for C. mannii. Germination and protocorm production were higher in the dark (0/24 h light/dark) than the light condition (12/12 h light/dark), whereas the subsequent protocorm development was better with light. These findings will aid in seedling production and reintroduction of C. mannii.

Abstract: This paper compares the firm merging Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) with just-in-time (JIT) inventory management, to the firm with traditional inventory methods for the purpose of deter-mining the impact of both methods on reducing inventory cost. JIT inventory management eliminates waste which includes all material, equipment, inventories and labor since JIT requires the production of just the right quantities and results in elimination of waste. (EDI) is the electronic exchange of information, documents and business transactions between computers. The information transmitted in manufacturing includes purchase orders, shipping and freight invoices, and bills of lading. There are many advantages to using EDI transaction over a traditional paper exchange environment. When the exchange of information is electronic the transactions are instantaneous. Thus, the processing and handling of paper and input of data are eliminated with no rekeying of data. Therefore, the chances of errors, time spent on auditing, and tracing errors are all significantly decreased. Additionally, the use of electronic commerce was able to cut down the lead time of purchasing and speed up inventory turnover to achieve just-in-time inventory management. Therefore, the merging of JIT with EDI has brought unprecedented benefits to users, especially with the increase in the use of international sourcing. The use of information technology to control the value chain cycle is crucial in the electronic industry, since it requires effective and efficient inventory control to speed up production and cut down inventory cost. This is an exploratory research project facilitated via the case study method. Two hubs and their suppliers were investigated to reveal the use of electronic commerce in the electronic industry based on the value chain theory. The findings are the firm merging EDI with JIT will result in a higher percentage of transactions as compared with the firm using EDI with traditional inventory method. This higher percentage of transactions by EDI results in reduced supply chain inventory cost due to using EDI to reduce paper work and errors in rekeying of data, audit tracing errors, etc. Thus, the firm merging JIT with EDI results in significantly reducing supply chain inventory cost.
FibroQ: An Easy and Useful Noninvasive Test for Predicting Liver Fibrosis in Patients with Chronic Viral Hepatitis

Abstract: Background: Liver biopsy–the gold standard in assessing liver histology–is recommendedbefore all antiviral treatment. However, this procedure may cause complications,is costly, and is limited by sampling errors. Hence, noninvasive testshave been proposed to assess the severity of hepatic fibrosis. We propose anovel noninvasive index for predicting liver fibrosis, named fibro-quotient(FibroQ), and compared the diagnostic accuracies of FibroQ, aspartateaminotransferase (AST)-to-platelet ratio index (APRI), and AST/alanineaminotransferase (ALT) ratio (AAR).Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 140 consecutive patients withchronic viral hepatitis who had undergone percutaneous liver biopsy beforetreatment at the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Chiayi from May 2005through December 2007. The clinical data including sex, age, AST, ALT,platelet count, prothrombin time (PT) international normalized ratio (INR),and the Metavir fibrosis score (F0 to F4) of liver histology were recorded.APRI, AAR, and FibroQ were calculated. Receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curves were constructed to compare the accuracies of these three noninvasivetests in predicting significant fibrosis in patients with chronic viralhepatitis.Results: FibroQ performed better than APRI, but was equal to AAR, in the predictionof significant fibrosis [area under the receiver operating characteristic curve(AUC): 0.783 vs 0.631 (p = 0.02) and 0.783 vs 0.733 (p = 0.26), respectively]and cirrhosis (AUC: 0.791 vs 0.634 (p = 0.03), and 0.791 vs 0.782 (p =0.47), respectively). Using FibroQ below the lower cutoff value (0.6) andabove the higher cutoff value (1.6), 108 of 140 (77.1%) patients could beidentified correctly to have or not have significant fibrosis.Conclusion: FibroQ, a novel noninvasive test, is an useful and easy tool to evaluate liverfibrosis in patients with chronic viral hepatitis and has better accuracy thanAPRI and is equal to AAR. Further prospective studies are warranted to validateits efficacy.

Abstract: Background: Retinoblastomas are the most common malignant intraocular tumor of childhood.We describe the survival outcomes and prognostic factors of patientswith a retinoblastoma receiving primary treatment at our hospital over thelast 20 years.Methods: A retrospective series study of 30 retinoblastoma cases treated from January1, 1987 to August 31, 2006 was conducted from a review of medical recordsand histopathological sections. Variables, including age at onset, laterality,treatment modalities, treatment delay, and optic nerve invasion, were analyzedto elucidate the prognostic factors associated with cumulative survival.Results: Most of the cases had an advanced retinoblastoma, and 23 patients receivedenucleation treatment. The average period of delay for treatment was 5.37months after discovery of the disease. The overall cumulative survival ratewas 83.08%. Patients with optic nerve invasion had a significantly lower survivalrate (60.0%) than those without optic nerve involvement (94.75%).Treatment delay in excess of 6 months was correlated with tumor invasion ofthe optic nerve.Conclusions: Tumor invasion of the optic nerve is the most significant prognostic factorfor surviving a retinoblastoma. Delayed treatment increases the risk of opticnerve invasion. Parental awareness of both the risk of this consequence andthe significance of early treatment is vital to achieving improved survivalrates.
Can Independent Directors Improve the Quality of Earnings? Evidence from Taiwan

Abstract: This study investigated companies publicly listed in Taiwan from 2002 to 2010 to examine whether independent directors improve the quality of earnings and analyzed whether the control rights of a controlling shareholder mitigate the impact of independent directors on earnings quality. Empirical results showed that independent directors can improve the quality of earnings, and those hired because of mandatory appointments had a greater positive effect on earnings quality compared to directors who were voluntarily hired. In addition, we also found that the controlling share held by a controlling shareholder reduces the benefit of independent directors on earnings quality.

Abstract: A person's interests exist as an internal state and are difficult to define. Since only external actions are observable, a proxy must be used that represents someone's interests. Techniques like collaborative filtering, behavioral targeting, and hashtag analysis implicitly model an individual's interests. I argue that these models are limited to shallow, temporary interests, which do not reflect people's deeper interests or passions. I propose an alternative model of interests that takes advantage of a user's social graph. The basic principle is that people only follow those that interest them, so the social graph is an effective and robust proxy for people's interests.
Simvastatin ameliorates established pulmonary hypertension through a heme oxygenase-1 dependent pathway in rats

Abstract: Simvastatin (10 mg/kgw/day) was tested in two rat models of pulmonary hypertension (PH): monocrotaline administration and chronic hypoxia. The hemodynamic changes, right heart hypertrophy, HO-1 protein expression, and heme oxygenase (HO) activity in lungs were measured in both models with and without simvastatin treatment. Tin-protoporphyrin (SnPP, 20 μmol/kg w/day), a potent inhibitor of HO activity, was used to confirm the role of HO-1.Simvastatin significantly ameliorated pulmonary arterial hypertension from 38.0 ± 2.2 mm Hg to 22.1 ± 1.9 mm Hg in monocrotaline-induced PH (MCT-PH) and from 33.3 ± 0.8 mm Hg to 17.5 ± 2.9 mm Hg in chronic hypoxia-induced PH (CH-PH) rats. The severity of right ventricular hypertrophy was significantly reduced by simvastatin in MCT-PH and CH-PH rats. Co-administration with SnPP abolished the benefits of simvastatin. Simvastatin significantly increased HO-1 protein expression and HO activity in the lungs of rats with PH; however co-administration of SnPP reduced HO-1 activity only. Abstract: Background Data from a large patient population regarding very long-term outcomes after BMS implantation are inadequate. This study aimed to evaluate the very long-term (8–17 years) clinical and long-term (3–5 years) angiographic outcomes after intracoronary bare-metal stenting (BMS). Methods and Results From the Cardiovascular Atherosclerosis and Percutaneous TrAnsluminal INterventions (CAPTAIN) registry, a total of 2391 patients with 2966 lesions treated with 3190 BMSs between November 1995 and May 2004 were evaluated. In total, 1898 patients with 2364 lesions, and 699 patients with 861 lesions underwent 6-month and 3- to 5- year angiographic follow-up, respectively. During a mean follow-up period of 149±51 months, 18.6% of the patients died (including 10.8% due to cardiac death), 6.1% developed reinfarction, 16.2% had target lesion revascularization (including 81% of the patients within the first year), 14.5% underwent new lesion stenting (including 72% of the patients after 3 years), 2.4% underwent coronary bypass surgery, and 1.6% had definite stent thrombosis. The overall cardiovascular event-free survival rate was 58.5%. The 6-month angiographic study indicated a 20% restenosis rate. The minimal luminal diameter increased from 0.65±0.44 mm to 3.02±0.46 mm immediately after stenting, decreased to 2.06±0.77 mm at the 6-month follow-up, and increased to 2.27±0.68 mm at the 3- to 5-year follow-up. Conclusions This study provides clinical and angiographic results from a large population of patients who underwent BMS implantations after a long-term follow-up period (149±51 months). The progression of coronary atherosclerosis developed over time, and presented with new lesion required stent implantation. The follow-up angiographic findings reconfirmed the late and sustained improvement in luminal diameter between 6 months and 3–5 years.
Sequential Aggregate Signatures with Short Public Keys without Random Oracles

Abstract: The notion of aggregate signature has been motivated by applications and it enables any user to compress different signatures signed by different signers on different messages into a short signature. Sequential aggregate signature, in turn, is a special kind of aggregate signature that only allows a signer to add his signature into an aggregate signature in sequential order. This latter scheme has applications in diversified settings such as in reducing bandwidth of certificate chains and in secure routing protocols. Lu, Ostrovsky, Sahai, Shacham, and Waters (EUROCRYPT 2006) presented the first sequential aggregate signature scheme in the standard model. The size of their public key, however, is quite large (i.e., the number of group elements is proportional to the security parameter), and therefore, they suggested as an open problem the construction of such a scheme with short keys. In this paper, we propose the first sequential aggregate signature schemes with short public keys (i.e., a constant number of group elements) in prime order (asymmetric) bilinear groups that are secure under static assumptions in the standard model. Furthermore, our schemes employ a constant number of pairing operations per message signing and message verification operation. Technically, we start with a public-key signature scheme based on the recent dual system encryption technique of Lewko and Waters (TCC 2010). This technique cannot directly provide an aggregate signature scheme since, as we observed, additional elements should be published in a public key to support aggregation. Thus, our constructions are careful augmentation techniques for the dual system technique to allow it to support sequential aggregate signature schemes. We also propose a multi-signature scheme with short public parameters in the standard model.
