Appraising the e-readiness of online learning facilitators: key human factors
L. Vermeulen
Koers : Bulletin for Christian Scholarship , 2008, DOI: 10.4102/koers.v73i4.184
Abstract: Higher education institutions in South Africa have undergone a number of changes over the past few years. These changes brought about inter alia changed work environments and job demands. One of the new job demands is the need to incorporate technology in teaching and learning, viz. e-learning. Not all job incumbents, however, adapted successfully to these changes, particularly with regard to e-readiness. Such a lack in e-readiness is likely to influence the effectiveness with which an academic employee will fulfil his/her online learning duties. Therefore, it is important to find solutions to overcome the lack of e-readiness. This article will focus on the role of human resource appraisal, in order to assess the e-readiness of online learning facilitators with a view to improving their online skills and capacity. A number of human factors that can play a role in employee performance and motivation, namely learning styles, personal profile patterns, and pace and style of technology adoption will be briefly outlined, in order to determine the role that these factors could play in assessing the e-readiness of online learning facilitators.
Perceptions of procedural justice in the retrenchment of managers
L. P. Vermeulen
South African Journal of Industrial Psychology , 2005, DOI: 10.4102/sajip.v31i2.195
Abstract: In this study, the researcher attempted to establish whether demographic variables, the context of lay-offs and layoff support factors affect retrenched managers’ perceptions of procedural justice with regard to their retrenchment. The results confirm that several factors affect managers’ perceptions of procedural justice. Five independent variables (voluntary vs. involuntary severance, lay-off magnitude, severance compensation, outplacement support and job search stress) accounted for 47,9 per cent of the variance in retrenched managers’ perceptions of procedural justice. It is doubtful that managers will perceive their retrenchment as fair if organisations fail to provide considerable concrete support, including severance pay, outplacement support and job search facilities.
Job satisfaction among South African aircraft pilots
C. Hoole,L. P. Vermeulen
South African Journal of Industrial Psychology , 2003, DOI: 10.4102/sajip.v29i1.86
Abstract: The importance of job satisfaction to human beings is a widely studied phenomenon, due to the assumption that job satisfaction is a major contributor to the well-being of employees and to several organisational outcomes. Most of these studies have focused on the influence of organisational variables on job satisfaction. Few studies have investigated the relationship between pilot-related factors and the job satisfaction levels of aviators. In a study of 704 South African pilots, significant differences were found in job satisfaction levels with regard to the nature of a pilot’s flying duty, area(s) of operation, type(s) of licence and level of command.
G. F. Oosthuizen,L. P. Vermeulen
South African Journal of Industrial Psychology , 1989, DOI: 10.4102/sajip.v15i1.477
Abstract: Evaluation criteria for selecting an organisation in the engineering profession. This study deals with identifying the evaluation criteria according to which people in the engineering profession choose the organisation where they will work. The research group consisted of 211 final-year engineering students, and 256 engineers employed by a specific organisation. A significant difference (p<0,01) was found between the relative importance of the evaluation criteria used by the students and those used by the employed engineers. Both groups, however, regarded intrinsic factors, for example, nature of work, achievement opportunities and recognition, as most important in choosing an organisation.

Oil & Gas Science and Technology , 2006, DOI: 10.2516/ogst:1974009
Waterflood efficiency in a fractured reservoir closely depends on the magnitude and rate of water imbibition within the matrix blocks. The effects of both block height and permeability on cil recovery as well as those of block boundary conditions (fractures may contain either water or oil, or may be tight) have been determined through numerous laboratory experiments with actual rock and fluid samples from a field operated by Elf.

Biotechnologie, Agronomie, Société et Environnement , 2003,
Abstract: The multidisciplinary nature, the international partnership and the large amount of information to be managed in an European project such as STRATFEED, require the development of an information management system. Within the framework of this project, the development of the Internet-oriented computer system required three facets: the data and information collection, the database building and the development of different applications. A tool for the dissemination of results (STRATFEED website) with both a public part and a confidential part, a tool for data management (STRATFEED manager), a tool for data queries (STRATFEED explorer) and two tools for decision-making (ARIES Decision Support System CD-Rom release and STRATFEED Decision Support System Internet release) were developed. The modular concept, which relates to the different topics of the project, facilitates the updating and development of a system according to research progress and user needs. The concept developed for this project can be used for any other project and can easily be adapted to meet new requirements. Third order nonlinearity of graphene: effects of phenomenological relaxation and finite temperature
J. L. Cheng,N. Vermeulen,J. E. Sipe
Physics , 2015, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.91.235320
Abstract: We investigate the effect of phenomenological relaxation parameters on the third order optical nonlinearity of doped graphene by perturbatively solving the semiconductor Bloch equation around the Dirac points. An analytic expression for the nonlinear conductivity at zero temperature is obtained under the linear dispersion approximation. With this analytic formula as starting point, we construct the conductivity at finite temperature and study the optical response to a laser pulse of finite duration. We illustrate the dependence of several nonlinear optical effects, such as third harmonic generation, Kerr effects and two photon absorption, parametric frequency conversion, and two color coherent current injection, on the relaxation parameters, temperature, and pulse duration. In the special case where one of the electric fields is taken as a dc field, we investigate the dc-current and dc-field induced second order nonlinearities, including dc-current induced second harmonic generation and difference frequency generation.
Effects of dipolar field in the spin dynamics of a Fermi liquid
P. L. Krotkov,V. P. Mineev,G. A. Vermeulen
Physics , 2001, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.65.054301
Abstract: We study spin dynamics of a normal Fermi liquid taking into account the demagnetizing field produced by the spin system itself. Linear solutions of the spin dynamics equations in the form of standing spin waves in a finite volume of liquid are found. At almost all known experimental conditions the influence of demagnetizing field can be satisfactorily described by the first order of perturbation theory. We carried out perturbational calculations for two geometries of experimental cell -- spherical and finite-cylindrical. We performed also exact numerical simulations of the spin wave spectra in a spherical cell at an arbitrary strength of the demagnetizing field. The obtained results are applied in particular to conditions of recent experiment (G.Vermeulen and A.Roni, Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 248 (2001)) related to the problem of zero temperature transverse relaxation in a polarized Fermi liquid. We found that not taking into account demagnetizing field leads to negligible errors in the measured relaxation time, thus supporting the conclusion of the absence of zero temperature spin wave damping.
Numerical study of the optical nonlinearity of doped and gapped graphene: From weak to strong field excitation
J. L. Cheng,N. Vermeulen,J. E. Sipe
Physics , 2015,
Abstract: Numerically solving the semiconductor Bloch equations within a phenomenological relaxation time approximation, we extract both the linear and nonlinear optical conductivities of doped graphene and gapped graphene under excitation by a laser pulse. We discuss in detail the dependence of second harmonic generation, third harmonic generation, and the Kerr effects on the doping level, the gap, and the electric field amplitude. The numerical results for weak electric fields agree with those calculated from available analytic perturbation formulas. For strong electric fields when saturation effects are important, all the effective third order nonlinear response coefficients show a strong field dependence.
