Abstract: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a complex, chronic condition, which causes widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue and a variety of other symptoms. Many polymorphisms related to neuroendocrine system function as the ApoE isoforms, Val158Met polymorphism in COMT, as well as a 44 bp deletion located in 5-HTTLPR, have been studied. Other polymorphisms have been related to inflammatory response such as the 70 bp VNTR in IL-4 or to citokine levels. Furthermore, some studies focused on finding out new FM related SNPs, have been performed by genome wide association scan (GWAS). The target of this work was to study a possible linkage of a collagen type I polymorphism (COL1A1 rs180012 SNP) affecting bone mineralization, with fibromyalgia. Results obtained show a clear association of ss homozygous genotype with FM patients no dependent on bone mineralization.

Abstract: mitochondrial diseases are a group of disorders produced by defects in the oxidative phosphorylation system (oxphos system), the final pathway of the mitochondrial energetic metabolism, resulting in a deficiency of the biosynthesis of atp. part of the polypeptide subunits involved in the oxphos system are codified by the mitochondrial dna. in the last years, mutations in this genetic system have been described and associated to well defined clinical syndromes. the clinical features of these disorders are very heterogeneous affecting, in most cases, to different organs and tissues and their correct diagnosis require precise clinical, morphological, biochemical and genetic data. the peculiar genetic characteristics of the mitochondrial dna (maternal inheritance, polyplasmia and mitotic segregation) give to these disorders very distinctive properties. the english version of this paper is available at: http://www.insp.mx/salud/index.html

Abstract: Las enfermedades mitocondriales son un grupo de trastornos que están producidos por un fallo en el sistema de fosforilación oxidativa (sistema Oxphos), la ruta final del metabolismo energético mitocondrial, con la consiguiente deficiencia en la biosíntesis del trifosfato de adenosina (ATP, por sus siglas en inglés). Parte de los polipéptidos que componen este sistema están codificados en el ácido desoxirribonucleico (DNA) mitocondrial y, en los últimos a os, se han descrito mutaciones que se han asociado con síndromes clínicos bien definidos. Las características genéticas del DNA mitocondrial, herencia materna, poliplasmia y segregación mitótica, confieren a estas enfermedades propiedades muy particulares. Las manifestaciones clínicas de estas enfermedades son muy heterogéneas y afectan a distintos órganos y tejidos por lo que su correcto diagnóstico implica la obtención de datos clínicos, morfológicos, bioquímicos y genéticos. Applying FDTD to the Coverage Prediction of WiMAX Femtocells

Abstract: Femtocells, or home base stations, are a potential future solution for operators to increase indoor coverage and reduce network cost. In a real WiMAX femtocell deployment in residential areas covered by WiMAX macrocells, interference is very likely to occur both in the streets and certain indoor regions. Propagation models that take into account both the outdoor and indoor channel characteristics are thus necessary for the purpose of WiMAX network planning in the presence of femtocells. In this paper, the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is adapted for the computation of radiowave propagation predictions at WiMAX frequencies. This model is particularly suitable for the study of hybrid indoor/outdoor scenarios and thus well adapted for the case of WiMAX femtocells in residential environments. Two optimization methods are proposed for the reduction of the FDTD simulation time: the reduction of the simulation frequency for problem simplification and a parallel graphics processing units (GPUs) implementation. The calibration of the model is then thoroughly described. First, the calibration of the absorbing boundary condition, necessary for proper coverage predictions, is presented. Then a calibration of the material parameters that minimizes the error function between simulation and real measurements is proposed. Finally, some mobile WiMAX system-level simulations that make use of the presented propagation model are presented to illustrate the applicability of the model for the study of femto- to macrointerference.
A Longitudinal Analysis of the Relationship between Positive and Negative Affect and Health  [PDF]

Abstract:

The present article analyses the influence of positive and negative affect on health. The sample consists of 113 first-year undergraduates (76.1% female, 21.2% male and 2.7% unknown), with an age range of 18 to 27 years (M = 19.12, SD = 1.77). Participants were asked to fill out the Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS), physical health was measure with one scale of the General Health Survey (SF-20), one month and one year later of filling out the PANAS. We used a structural equation modelling to test longitudinal relationships between positive and negative affect and health. As we expected, PA and NA predicted health measured one month later and one year later, respectively. Longitudinal analyses over successive 1-month and 1-year intervals revealed reciprocal effects between health and negative and positive affect. The implications for research on health and emotions are discussed.

Abstract: Agroecology has as an objective the understanding of the key elements and processes that regulate the function of agrosystems, for their effective management in harmony with the environment. Plant protection has been focused on the concept of control, mainly utilizing chemical or biological arsenals, and more recently, the biotechnological. The application of ecological criteria in plant protection has allowed the implementation of the biofumigation processes, a technique based on the utilization of gases produced during the biodescomposition of organic matter to manage soilborne phytopathogenic organisms. It is hoped that future improvements in agriculture will consider the increasing worries related to the environment, the conservation of the natural resources, public health, and highlighting attention of the importance of agriculture in the elimination of poverty, as well as its contribution to the development of biofuels. La agroecología tiene como objetivo el conocimiento de los elementos y procesos claves en el funcionamiento de los agrosistemas, para su eficaz gestión en armonía con el ambiente. La protección vegetal ha sido enfocada tradicionalmente, bajo el concepto de lucha y control, utilizando arsenales químicos o biológicos y, en estos momentos, biotecnológicos. La aplicación de criterios ecológicos en protección vegetal ha permitido desarrollar procesos como la biofumigación, fundamentada en la utilización de los gases resultantes de la biodescomposición de la materia orgánica para el manejo de organismos patógenos de los vegetales. Es de esperar que el futuro de la agricultura muestre una mayor preocupación por el ambiente, la conservación de los recursos naturales, la salud de las personas y se destaque su contribución a la reducción de la pobreza, así como su aportación al desarrollo de los agrocombustibles.

Abstract: In an unsuccessful attempt to prepare through several routes the 7-deoxo-7-methylene-homothuriferic acid methyl ester from podophyllotoxone, using the Takai reaction, several unexpected products were obtained. In this paper the reaction sequences used and the structural characterization of products obtained are described, as well as an approach on their possible formation mechanisms is briefly commented.

Abstract: this article, which uses the concepts of market orientation (mo) and corporate social responsibility (csr) as a basic reference, aims i) to identify and analyze the real importance of those factors that determine a greater or lesser degree of concern for the customer and ii) to establish a connection between both concepts (mo and csr). to analyze the proposed objectives, the research is based on a multiple case-study of companies from diverse sectors. the data suggests that competitive pressure and legal rules and regulations are the critical factors of that concern, whereas the company's pattern of social responsibility is a secondary element. therefore, in certain situations the market can act as a sovereign adjustment mechanism over the long term, whereas in others a set of laws and regulations must be created to protect consumers. the implications of these results and the conclusions of the study are included in the final part of the article.
