Load Forecast Model Switching Scheme for Improved Robustnessto Changes in Building Energy Consumption Patterns

Abstract: This paper presents a new, accurate load forecasting technique robust to fluctuations due to unusual load behavioral changes in buildings, i.e., the potential for small commercial buildings with heterogeneous stores. The proposed scheme is featured with two functional components: data classification by daily characteristics and automatic forecast model switching. The scheme extracts daily characteristics of the input load data and arranges the load data into weekday and weekend data. Forecasting is conducted based on a selected model among ARMAX (autoregressive moving average with exogenous variable) models with the processed input data. Kalman filtering is applied to estimate model parameters. The model-switching scheme monitors the accumulated error and substitutes a backup load model for the currently working model, when the accumulated error exceeds a threshold value, to reduce the increased bias error due to the change in the consumption pattern. This switching reinforces the limited performance of parameter estimation given a fixed structure and, thus, forecasting capability. The study results demonstrate that the proposed scheme is reasonably accurate and even robust to changes in the electricity use patterns. It should help improve the performance for building control systems for energy efficiency.
Visions, Scenarios and Action Plans Towards Next Generation Tanzania Power System

Abstract: This paper presents strategic visions, scenarios and action plans for enhancing Tanzania Power Systems towards next generation Smart Power Grid. It first introduces the present Tanzanian power grid and the challenges ahead in terms of generation capacity, financial aspect, technical and non-technical losses, revenue loss, high tariff, aging infrastructure, environmental impact and the interconnection with the neighboring countries. Then, the current initiatives undertaken by the Tanzania government in response to the present challenges and the expected roles of smart grid in overcoming these challenges in the future with respect to the scenarios presented are discussed. The developed scenarios along with visions and recommended action plans towards the future Tanzanian power system can be exploited at all governmental levels to achieve public policy goals and help develop business opportunities by motivating domestic and international investments in modernizing the nation’s electric power infrastructure. In return, it should help build the green energy economy.
On the Empirical Estimation of Utility Distribution Damping Parameters Using Power Quality Waveform Data

Abstract: This paper describes an efficient yet accurate methodology for estimating system damping. The proposed technique is based on linear dynamic system theory and the Hilbert damping analysis. The proposed technique requires capacitor switching waveforms only. The detected envelope of the intrinsic transient portion of the voltage waveform after capacitor bank energizing and its decay rate along with the damped resonant frequency are used to quantify effective X/R ratio of a system. Thus, the proposed method provides complete knowledge of system impedance characteristics. The estimated system damping can also be used to evaluate the system vulnerability to various PQ disturbances, particularly resonance phenomena, so that a utility may take preventive measures and improve PQ of the system.

Abstract: This paper presents look-ahead energy management system for a grid-connected residential photovoltaic (PV) system with battery under critical peak pricing for electricity, enabling effective and proactive participation of consumers in the Smart Grid’s demand response. In the proposed system, the PV is the primary energy source with the battery for storing (or retrieving) excessive (or stored) energy to pursue the lowest possible electricity bill but it is grid-tied to secure electric power delivery. Premise energy management scheme with an accurate yet practical load forecasting capability based on a Kalman filter is designed to increase the predictability in controlling the power flows among these power system components and the controllable electric appliances in the premise. The case studies with various operating scenarios demonstrate the validity of the proposed system and significant cost savings through operating the energy management scheme.

Abstract: BPM system is an information system that is introduced to accelerate process cycle time through automation of repetitive organizational tasks. With growing importance of business process management, functionality of BPM systems is now extended to support the design, analysis and optimization of business processes. In particular, BPM brought in new applications related with managing business processes; Business Activity Monitoring (BAM) and Business Process Analysis (BPA). In this study, we raise four issues regarding the successful implementation of BAM and discuss what companies should do to address them. Specifically, we will focus on the identification of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), mapping the KIPs to the BPM metrics. Designing the analysis methods and building digital dashboards. By linking BPM and BPA, BAM provides the visibility on what goes on with several major business processes and all the related information that will help managers make a well-informed, timely decision, so that it significantly accelerates the enterprise s reaction time.
La création d’un réseau de villes : circulations, pouvoirs et territoires

Abstract: Cet article vise à questionner les effets d’un réseau de villes sur les politiques publiques urbaines à travers la naissance et l’évolution du Club des Villes Cyclables. Autrement dit, il s’agit d’ouvrir la boite noire d’un réseau de villes en analysant sa genèse, sa structure, ses enjeux, son activité, afin de mettre en lumière sa capacité à transformer les cadres de l’action publique urbaine. La description historique et institutionnelle du réseau montre l’importance des circulations dans chaque phase de développement du Club, à la fois à l’intérieur du réseau et sur les territoires urbains. Dans un premier temps, on observe ces circulations dès la genèse du réseau, à une période où le Club des Villes Cyclables souhaite constituer un lobby national du vélo urbain. Dans un deuxième temps, les circulations vont s’orienter vers l’échelle urbaine, à travers l’avènement d’un pouvoir d’agglomération technique et politique. Enfin, le réseau et ses circulations constituent, de plus en plus, un enjeu pour les territoires et les politiques publiques urbaines. What impact a cities network can have on urban public policies ? This article purpose is to enlighten this question through the birth, and evolution, of the Club des Villes Cyclables (Biking Cities Club). In other words to open the black box of a cities network and analyse its genesis, its structure, its stakes, its activity, and eventually show its ability to transform the framework of public urban policies. The historical and institutional description of the network underlines the importance of circulations in each stage of development of the Club, at once within the network and in the urban areas. These circulations can be observed from the genesis of the network, when the Club was willing to constitute a national lobby of urban biking. Later on, circulations will turn onto the urban scale, through the advent of a technical and political urban authority. Now, it appears that the network and its circulations constitute, more and more, a stake for the territories administration and the urban public policy.

The Kuratowski covering conjecture for graphs of order < 10 for the nonorientable surfaces of genus 3 and 4

Abstract: Kuratowski proved that a finite graph embeds in the plane if it does not contain a subdivision of either K_5 or K_{3,3}, called Kuratowski subgraphs. A conjectured generalization of this result to all nonorientable surfaces says that a finite minimal forbidden subgraph for the nonorientable surface of genus g can be written as the union of g+1 Kuratowski subgraphs such that the union of each pair of these fails to embed in the projective plane, the union of each triple of these fails to embed in the Klein bottle if g >= 2, and the union of each triple of these fails to embed in the torus if g >= 3. We show that this conjecture is true for all minimal forbidden subgraphs of order < 10 for the nonorientable surfaces of genus 3 and 4.
Density of Schr?dinger Titchmarsh-Weyl $m$ functions on Herglotz functions

Abstract: We will show that all Titchmarsh-Weyl $m$ functions corresponding to Schr\"odinger operators are dense in all Herglotz functions. To show this, we first discuss a topology on canonical systems which interacts with the uniform convergence of Herglotz functions on compact subsets of the upper half plane. We then characterize canonical systems which can be written in a Schr\"odinger (eigenvalue) equation and vice versa, which gives us an easy way to construct $m$ functions corresponding to Schr\"odinger equations in terms of canonical systems. Finally we approximate the canonical system whose $m$ function is a given Herglotz function by canonical systems which can be written in Schr\"odinger equations such that their $m$ functions converges to a given Herglotz function.
