Sidebands in Optically Detected Magnetic Resonance Signals of Nitrogen Vacancy Centers in Diamond

Abstract: We study features in the optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) signals associated with negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers coupled to other paramagnetic impurities in diamond. Our results are important for understanding ODMR line shapes and for optimization of devices based on NV centers. We determine the origins of several side features to the unperturbed NV magnetic resonance by studying their magnetic field and microwave power dependences. Side resonances separated by around 130 MHz are due to hyperfine coupling between NV centers and nearest-neighbor C-13 nuclear spins. Side resonances separated by approximately {40, 260, 300} MHz are found to originate from simultaneous spin flipping of NV centers and single substitutional nitrogen atoms. All results are in agreement with the presented theoretical calculations.

Abstract: The P2 experiment in Mainz aims to measure the weak mixing angle in electron- proton scattering to a precision of 0.13 %. In order to suppress uncertainties due to proton structure and contributions from box graphs, both a low average momentum transfer $Q^2$ of $4.5\cdot 10^{-3}$ GeV$^2/c^2$ and a low beam energy of 155 MeV are chosen. In order to collect the enormous statistics required for this measurement, the new Mainz Energy Recovery Superconducting Accelerator (MESA) is being constructed. These proceedings describe the motivation for the measurement, the experimental and accelerator challenges and how we plan to tackle them.

Abstract: The shaman’s song is reflected in epical literature in the theme of the Otherworldly Journey. As recorded by ethnologists, the shaman’s song, a record of as well as engagement with such a journey, summons up a bizarre dreamscape populated by fantastic beings, and engages with a specialized poetics employing linguistic paradox, trance-inducing rhythms, and nonsense words—these last considered by shamans to be a “secret language.” Alice Notley’s contemporary descent myth The Descent of Alette has strong ties to the ancient Sumerian Descent of Inanna as well as to the Gnostic myth of Sophia’s descent into matter to affect the redemption of humankind. I show Inanna’s connection to shamanic praxis and Gnostic mythology, and read Alette’s journey as a crisis vision, in order to argue for the existence of a shamanic poetics, a special way of using language as a healing medium and vehicle of myth. Notley’s post-modern epic placed alongside the extremely ancient Inanna myth-cycle reveals the shaman’s perennial theme of the Otherworldly Journey ever reconfigured according to the artist/healer’s relationship to a specific culture, and that culture’s relationship to the shamanic paradigm.

Abstract: The importance of vision in guiding a leader and an organization is paramount. Given the importance of vision, leaders will often seek assistance from tools in order to amplify their vision. Big data is one of the primary tools commonly sought. In this brief article, the advantages and disadvantages of relying on big data are explored. Plato’s allegory of the cave is used to advance the position that a proper vision ought to dwell in experience first and only secondarily resort to abstraction.

The Surrealist Voice emerges from the liminal state between sleeping and waking as “spoken thought”, the voice of being revealing itself to the poet. It is poesis speaking itself.
Construction and Evaluation of a Combined Cyclophosphamide/Nanoparticle Anticancer Vaccine  [PDF]

Abstract: Tumor immunotherapy is a rapidly emerging form of cancer treatment. In the current study, a nanoparticle-based vaccine was constructed and the efficacy was assessed through analysis of immune cell populations, tumor growth rates, and metastasis. The vaccine was fabricated through encapsulation of plasmid DNA encoding the tumor-associated antigen Mage-b, and the TLR9 agonist CpG oligodeoxynucleotides by a biodegradable polymer, poly(L,D-lactic-coglycolic acid) (PLGA). The size and shape of the nanoparticles suggested that they were an appropriate size for uptake by professional antigen presenting cells; dendritic cells. Furthermore, effects of the immunopotentiating drug cyclo-phosphamide was included to decrease systemic populations of regulatory T cells (Treg); immune system sentinels that down-regulate immune responses. The vaccine was assessed using the 4T1 murine mammary carcinoma model which is a model for stage IV breast cancer. The combined cyclophosphamide/nanoparticle vaccine was shown to significantly reduce 4T1 tumor growth rates and lung metastasis in female BALB/c mice.
A surprising method for polarising antiprotons

Abstract: We propose a method for polarising antiprotons in a storage ring by means of a polarised positron beam moving parallel to the antiprotons. If the relative velocity is adjusted to $v/c \approx 0.002$ the cross section for spin-flip is as large as about $2 \cdot 10^{13}$ barn as shown by new QED-calculations of the triple spin-cross sections. Two possibilities for providing a positron source with sufficient flux density are presented. A polarised positron beam with a polarisation of 0.70 and a flux density of approximately $1.5 \cdot 10^{10}$/(mm$^2$ s) appears to be feasible by means of a radioactive $^{11}$C dc-source. A more involved proposal is the production of polarised positrons by pair production with circularly polarised photons. It yields a polarisation of 0.76 and requires the injection into a small storage ring. Such polariser sources can be used at low (100 MeV) as well as at high (1 GeV) energy storage rings providing a time of about one hour for polarisation build-up of about $10^{10}$ antiprotons to a polarisation of about 0.18. A comparison with other proposals show a gain in the figure-of-merit by a factor of about ten.
A New Alternative Technique for Preperitoneal Inguinal Hernia Repair: Using Groin Innominate Fascial Island Flap  [PDF]

Abstract: Aim: Despite the fact that reported low recurrence rates and improvement results, optimal surgical technique for in-guinal hernia repair was not found and recurrence was not eliminated. We used firstly groin innominate fascial island flap to reinforce the weak inguinal tissue for the repair. Methods: From the February 2010 to December 2010, 15 patients (13 male and 2 female) with inguinal hernia underwent repair with using island groin innominate fascial flap. The follow-up period ranged from 8 to 12 months (mean, 10 months). Results: Seroma developed in one case. Others had not any complications. Conclusion: Because of our technique avoids from the complications and drawbacks of the prosthetic mesh, autograft and abdominal wall flaps, we think that the groin deep fascial flap can be a good alternative to prosthetic meshes for reconstruction of inguinal hernia repair.

Abstract: This building is shaped in the form of a cross, with ten towers, six of which are 70 m high and the other four 45 m high. The most outstanding feature is their slender Steel, water-filled columns supporting the floor construction. The columns, in their turn rest on cross beams placed on box trusses (caisson) connecting the towers. The towers were built using sliding forms, while the box trusses were built using scaffold forms. Infra-red rays were used in different construction stages to achieve the fast curing of the concrete. The building contains, among other areas, an electronic data processing facility, a teaching hall, mess hall, lounge, etc. Este edificio tiene forma de una cruz, con diez torres, cuatro de ellas con una altura de 70 m y las otras seis con una altura de 45 m. Su rasgo más característico son unas columnas delgadas de acero llenas de agua, sobre las que se apoyan los forjados de las plantas. Estas columnas, a su vez, se apoyan sobre vigas transversales colocadas sobre las vigas-cajón que unen las torres. Las torres fueron realizadas mediante encofrados deslizantes, mientras las vigas-cajón lo fueron con cimbras. En diversas fases de la construcción se utilizaron rayos infrarrojos para conseguir un endurecimiento rápido del hormigón. El edificio consta de una instalación de elaboración electrónica de datos, una sala de ense anza, comedor, sala de estar, etc.

Abstract: Different theoretical explanations have been developed for seemingly inconsistent actions that deal with varying levels of risk and time. We propose a simple model of utility that unifies these seemingly separate phenomena, while not departing too far from the standard models of utility maximization already in use. Our driving assumption is that preferences over riskier outcomes discontinuously depart from preferences under certainty; a jump from no risk to some risk is fundamentally different from a movement of some risk to more risk.
