Abstract: The Spontaneously Diabetic Torii (SDT) rat is a novel model for nonobese type 2 diabetes. In this study we investigated the glycolipid metabolic changes with phlorizin-treatment, which inhibits intestinal glucose uptake and renal glucose reabsorption, in male SDT rats. Phlorizin (100 mg/kg, b.i.d., s.c.) was administered for 4 weeks to SDT rats from 20 to 24 weeks of age. As a result, phlorizin reduced the development of hyperglycemia and decreased the hemoglo-bin A1c (HbA1c) levels. In the liver, phlorizin increased mRNA levels of glucokinase, the enzymes related with the glycogen cascade and the proteins associated with lipid metabolism. In conclusion, chronic administration of phlorizin in SDT rats produced a good glycemic control and an improvement in liver function.

Abstract: Autonomic software component (ASC) QoS matchmaking problem for autonomic element has been taken as one of the most important issue in field of autonomic computing based on agent. Aimed at overcoming drawbacks such as subjec-tiveness and unfairness, and improving the self-configuration capability for autonomic element, we introduce evalua-tion mechanism of confidence of individual QoS attributes during ASC QoS matchmaking, i.e., fidelity factor for each attribute, and propose an ASC QoS matchmaking algorithm based on fidelity factor. Simulation experiments demon-strate that our proposed algorithm performs best performance in terms of QoS than other existing algorithms, and has better compromise between attribute quality and users’ evaluation when selecting ASC.

Some Critical Issues in the Development of Chinese High-Speed Rail: Challenges and Coping Strategies  [PDF]

In this paper, several critical issues related to Chinese high-speed rails (CHSR) are analyzed, investigated and discussed, including development background, reasons for high ticket fare, some typical factors that influence the environmental life-cycle assessment, time and cost comparison of typical door-to-door travel routes between different transport modes and complementary strategies among different transport modes. First, the results show that the expanding high-speed rail network increased the pressure on the country's roads in the 2010 spring festival rush period due to the high ticket fare of CHSR. Second, due to lower than expected ridership because of the high ticket price and limited demand in less developed areas, some Chinese CHSR projects have become economically unsustainable. Third, without sufficient ridership and service life, the utilization of HSR was unable to show any advantages in the environmental impact compared with the other transport modes. In addition, the impact of shock from CHSR on Chinese domestic civil airlines is evident when the travel distance is below 1050 km. The key objective of the investigation is to enhance our understanding of the development and operation of Chinese high-speed rail. One of the key contributions of the current paper is the presented suggestions for complementary strategies between different transport modes to make full use of Chinese transportation resources to promote low carbon economy.

Heterogeneous Degradation of Dyes in Industrial Effluent over Fenton-Like Nano-Fe2O3/Goldmine Complex  [PDF]

Nano-Fe2O3/goldmine complex was obtained by chemical coprecipitation reaction on the surface of goldmine waste-solid. Being used as the heterogeneous catalyst in Fenton-like advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), its treatment effect was studied in the removal performance of industrial dyes effluent. Although the maximal COD removal efficiency would reach 35.4% when 5 mL NaClO was added in 100 mL industrial dyes effluent, it is found that by using nano-Fe2O3/goldmine system, the COD removal efficiency of 13,000 mg/L dyes wastewater could reach up to 75.5% in the presence of 30 g/L nano-Fe2O3/goldmine complex and 50 mL/L NaClO at 50C.

A Study on Lung Cancer in Jianghan Plain  [PDF]

Abstract: This study was to investigate the epidemiology of lung cancer in Jianghan Plain, providing scientific basis for prevention and treatment of lung cancer. Pathology and clinical data of 1290 patients diagnosed lung cancer from the largest hospital in Jianghan Plain were collected and analyzed. Results found that the lung cancer incidence increased gradually from the age of 40 and at the peak during 61 to 70 years old; the male to female ratio was 2.45:1; Smoking patients were 841 cases, accounting for 65.2% of all cases. Smoke index > 400 was 771 cases accounting for 91.7 percent of smokers and smoking index < 400 was 70 cases accounting for 8.3% of smoking patients. 93.6% of the patients were to start smoking at a young age. The rate of patient pathological cytology diagnosed by fiberoptic bronchoscopy was 31.8%, which showed that it was an important diagnostic method for lung cancer. The main reason for smoking is to break up the monotony and although many patients know nicotine, carbon monoxide is the main smoking harmful substances and smoking may cause lung cancer; not many people can take the initiative to quit smoking. It also showed that squamous cell carcinoma was the main type in smoking patients, while adeno-carcinoma in non-smoking patients. The comprehensive epidemiological analysis suggested that smoking is an important factor in causing lung cancer, smoking cessation education and regular medical examinations to strengthen the prevention of lung cancer have a positive meaning to their family members.

Abstract: See Research article: http://genomebiology.com/2011/12/6/R54In over half a century since its initial discovery in bacteriophage DNA, 5-hydroxylmethylcytosine (5hmC) has been mostly a rare and uncharacterized phenomenon. Starting in 2009, a series of studies discovered the presence of 5hmCs in Purkinje neurons, adult brain, mouse cerebellum, and also in mouse and human embryonic stem cells [1,2]. The 5hmC base was also identified as an intermediate of active DNA demethylation by way of hydrolyzing 5-methylcytosine (5mC) by members of the ten-eleven translocation (Tet) enzyme family. These discoveries have motivated a multitude of recent studies focusing on resolving the mystery of how 5hmC is dynamically created and removed during stem cell development and differentiation, characterizing the genome-wide localization of 5hmC as a new epigenetic marker, and determining the roles played by 5hmC in epigenetic regulation.A report in this issue of Genome Biology by Stroud and colleagues [3] represents one of the recent efforts in mapping the localization of 5hmCs throughout the genome in embryonic stem cells and related cell types. In the work by Shroud et al. on the mapping of 5hmCs in human embryonic stem cells (hESCs), genomic fragments containing 5hmCs were enriched by immunoprecipitation with 5hmC-specific antibodies, followed by Illumina massively parallel sequencing and quantification of enrichment based on read depth. To eliminate artifacts due to non-specific antibodies, two data sets were generated with different commercial antibodies, and the consistency seemed to be high.With this map, Shroud and colleagues showed that 5hmCs tend to associate with genic regions, including both promoters and gene bodies (particularly exons). In intergenic regions, 5hmCs co-localize with enhancers marked by the activating histone modifications H3K4me1 and H3K27ac. Empirical Analysis on the Relationship between Internationalization Degree and Operation Performance of China’s Colour TV Industry

Abstract: By building a regressive model, this paper studies the relationship between the internationization degree and operation performance of China’s five major colour TV corporations (TCL Group, Qingdao Haier, Shenzhen Konka, Hisense Electric and Sichuan Changhong). The study shows that the internationalization degree and operation performance of TCL Group, Qingdao Haier and Shenzhen Konka are negatively correlated while it is positively correlated for Hisense Electric and Sichuan Changhong, which indicates that the relationship between the internationalization degree and operation performance of China’s colour TV industry is uncertain. The paper also makes in-depth analysis on reasons of the different results.

Edge spin excitations and reconstructions of integer quantum Hall liquids

Abstract: We study the effect of electron-electron interaction on the charge and spin structures at the edge of integer quantum Hall liquids, under three different kinds of confining potentials. Our exact diagonalization calculation for small systems indicates that the low energy excitations of \nu=1 ferromagnetic state are bosonic edge spin waves. Instabilities of the ferromagnetic state with altering confinement strength result from the softening of these edge spin waves, and formation of edge spin textures. In \nu\lesssim 2 regime, exact diagonalization on edge electron systems indicates that compact Hartree-Fock states with different total spin always become ground states in some regions of parameter space, and the ground states appear in between two compact states are their edge spin waves. The initial \nu=2 instability is toward the compact state with total spin 1. Larger systems are studied using a microscopic trial wave functions, and some quantitative predictions on the edge instabilities for a certain type of confining potential are reached in the thermodynamic limit.
