Dogal Afetler ve Cevre Dergisi , 2015, DOI: 10.21324/dacd.09684
Abstract: The predictions related to earthquakes have drawn the attention of society as well as media in the developing countries where the ‘common’ people have different perceptions. Most often, popular myths take over scientific facts among the public, and this can lead to rumors about natural hazards. This article will mention rumors related to natural disasters, and particularly the rumors regarding the response of society, media and government when earthquakes happen. This research emphasizes the ethical responsibility needed to be undertaken by scientists to avoid panic instead of the rumors by pseudo-experts. This article summarizes the efforts provided by the scientists to prevent the recent rumors about a sudden water rise in Lake Van, the flash flood occurred in the Samsun Province and the earthquake happened (M 6.7, October 23, 2011) in the Van Province in Turkey.

Open Journal of Civil Engineering (OJCE) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ojce.2012.22010
Abstract: This paper is concerned with the earthquake analysis of suspension bridges, in which the effects of large deflections are taken into account. The first part of the study deals with an iteration scheme for the nonlinear static analysis of suspension bridges by means of tangent stiffness matrices. The concept of tangent stiffness matrix is then introduced in the frequency equation governing the free vibration of the system. At any equilibrium stage, the vibrations are assumed to take place tangent to the curve representing the force-deflection characteristics of the structure. The bridge is idealized as a three dimensional lumped mass system and subjected to three orthogonal components of earthquake ground motion producing horizontal, vertical and torsional oscillations. By this means a realistic appraisal is achieved for torsional response as well as for the other types of vibration. The modal response spectrum technique is applied to evaluate the seismic loading for the combination of these vibrations. Various numerical examples are introduced in order to demonstrate the method of analysis. The procedure described enables the designer to evaluate the nonlinear dynamic response of suspension bridges in a systematic manner.

Idil Dergisi , 2012, DOI: 10.7816/idil-01-05-18

Abstract: In this study, New Zealand Social Studies Curriculum is introduced and the differences and similarities between thiscurriculum and the social studies curriculum in Turkey are determined by comparing and contrasting them. Survey model is usedas the purpose is to present the current situation. Therefore, social studies curriculums and the sources about them are obtainedfrom libraries and internet. After the curriculums and the resources are obtained, social studies curriculums of the two countries are investigated in termsof structure and content. In this study, social studies curriculum (4-7. grades) practiced in Turkey isn’t comprehensivelymentioned because of time restraint. The following results are found after the investigation of both countries’ social studiescurriculums.Comparison in terms of Teaching ApproachesSocial Studies in New Zealand is developed on the basis of “Social studies as citizenship transfer”, Social studies as socialsciences”, Social studies as reflective inquiry”, which are known as social studies teaching approaches and accepted by manycountries and our country, and of approaches known as “Social studeis as individual, social and ethical development”. In themeantime, perspectives in social studies teaching programs; “Bicultural perspectives”, “Multicultural perspectives”, “Perspectiveson gender”, “Perspectives on the present issues” and “Perspectives on the future” have become effective on the content ofteaching program.Comparison in respect of StructureThe social studies curriculums of both countries are structured in respect of learning areas. Learning areas in New Zealandsocial studies curriculums are determined as; 1. Social Organization, 2. Culture and Heritage, 3. Place and Environment, 4. Time,Permanency and Change, 5. Sources and Economical Activities. Those in the social studeis curriculums in Turkey are determinedas; 1. Individual and Society, 2. Culture and Heritage, 3. People, Places and Change, 4. Production, Distribution andConsumption, 5. Time, Permanency and Change, 6. Science, Technology and Society, 7. Groups, Institutions and SocialOrganizations, 8. Power, Administration and Society, 9. Global Connections. It can be stated that learning areas in both countries’ social studies curriculums are similar in terms of content. The purposesdefined in New Zealand social studies curriculum are maintained using inquiry, values exploration and social decision makingwhich are stated as social studies process whereas they are carried out through concept, skill and value dimensions in Turkey. While a perception based on construc
Surrogating Bodies, Embodiment of Theories (Vekalet Eden Bedenler, Cisimle en Kuramlar)

Abstract: Hollywood has intrigued critical minds through controversial films, especially in science-fiction, which might be considered as crossroads of several sociological, philosophical and cultural concepts/issues. The Surrogates (Jonathan Mostow, 2009) is one of the latest representatives in this "genre". When people of the future (let us call them Techno Sapiens) use their remotely-controlled "bodies", which are just perfectly designed robots, in order to avoid having any damage in their real "bodies", meaning of body, social relations, pleasure, life, experience, risk, Etc. shift into a very complicated level that provides a wide range of opportunities to discuss contemporary sociological and theoretical lines including body and politics, power, bio-politics, gender, everyday life and so on. This paper has the intention of discussing all these theoretical issues through reading Giorgio Agamben, Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze, Jean Baudrillard and Slavoj Zizek. Cinema is a symptomatic field to analyze tendencies of modern societies and science-fiction has offered richer symptoms than any other genre in the history of film industry. Usually exaggeration of "now" is the way to imagine "future" in science-fiction literature and cinema. So, this paper will give us the chance to discuss what are the current "body politics" drive modern people towards the dystopia of The Surrogates. Critical concepts of the above mentioned theorists/thinkers will be corner-stones of our experience for "practicing theory" around The Surrogates.

Abstract: Dc/ac transport characteristic of PECVD grown hydrogenated amorphous silicon carbide (a-SiCx:H) thin film was investigated in MIS (metal/insulator/semiconductor) structure by dc current/voltage (I/V) at different temperature (T), ac admittance vs. temperature at constant gate bias voltages and deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS), respectively. According to I-V-T analysis, two main regimes exhibited. At low electric field, apparent Ohm’s law dominated with Arrhenius type thermal activation energy (EA) around 0.4 eV in both forward and reverse directions. At high field, on the contrary, space charge limited (SCL) current mechanism was eventual. The current transport mechanisms and its temperature/frequency dependence were interpreted by a thermally activated hopping processes across the localized states within a-SiCx:H thin film since 0.4 eV as EA was not high enough for intrinsic band conduction. Instead, transport of charge carriers took place in two steps; first a carrier is thermally excited to an empty energy level from an occupied state then multi-step tunnelling or hopping starts over. Therefore, the two steps mechanisms manifested as single activation energy, differing only through capture cross sections. In turn, two steps in capacitance together with conductance peaks in C-(G)-T while convoluted DLTS signal associated with such events in the measurements.

Journal of Animal and Veterinary Advances , 2012, DOI: 10.3923/javaa.2011.2975.2979
Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the adsorption of the 2,2 Dichlorovinylphosfate (DDVP) on raw and modified bentonite using High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The modified bentonite were prepared by adding HNO3 and Na2CO3. The Freundlich adsorption isotherm defines DDVP adsorption in aqueous and ethanol-aqueous solutions by raw and modified bentonite. The variables of temperature, time and pH were observed on adsorption of DDVP. Then maximum adsorption of DDVP capacity was measured on bentonite modified with HNO3 in pH 3.0 and 40°C . The MBB clay used in experimental work played a major role on the adsorption of DDVP so MBB has better characteristics than other adsorbents and The Freundlich isotherms of MBB in aqueous ethanol solution was better than isotherms of aqueous solution for much better to adsorb of DDVP.
