The SOFIA Telescope
Alfred Krabbe
Physics , 2000, DOI: 10.1117/12.389103
Abstract: The SOFIA telescope as the heart of the observatory is a major technological challenge. I present an overview on the astro-nomical and scientific requirements for such a big airborne observatory and demonstrate the impact of these requirements on the layout of SOFIA, in particular on the telescope design as it is now. Selected components of the telescope will be de-scribed in their context and functionality. The current status of the telescope is presented.
la totalización del significado: las políticas de la narratividad entre terrorismo y rebelión1
Suárez Krabbe,Julia;
Universitas Humanística , 2006,
Abstract: this paper analyses the narrative uses of ideas and values in the democratic security-policies of colombian president alvaro uribe's government, and in the symbolic donation of money from the danish organisation, rebellion, to the guerrillas of the farc in october 2004. the article delves into depth in the epistemological implications of these narrative uses and their political consequences, suggesting that both are ways of totalising meaning and reinforce frames of understanding characteristics of modernity, legitimising violent practices. the theoretical framework is provided by the thought of the latin american modernity/coloniality research program, phenomenological and existential anthropology, and hannah arendt's thought. the empirical material consists of danish and colombian media-representations on the donation, documents from rebellion's web-site, field notes of conversations led with persons in colombia on the donation, and interviews with a spokesperson from rebellion.
Frequency vs. intensity: which should be used as anchors for self-report instruments?
Krabbe Julia,Forkmann Thomas
Health and Quality of Life Outcomes , 2012, DOI: 10.1186/1477-7525-10-107
Abstract: Background The aim of the present study was to investigate the usability of verbal rating scale anchors in patients suffering from a depressive episode and whether differences between frequency or intensity scales could be determined. Frequency and intensity terms were evaluated concerning their interindividual congruency, intraindividual stability across time, and distinguishability of adjacent terms. Methods In a longitudinal design, 44 patients (age M=39.1, SD=15.2, 68.2% female) with a depressive disorder filled out several established questionnaires (e.g. BDI or SCL-90) and questionnaires containing frequency and intensity terms which should be indicated by the percentage of time or intensity that is reflected by each term at two different measuring times within one week. Data analysis contained t-tests for paired samples and effect sizes d according to Cohen. Results Intensity terms showed weaker intraindividual stability across time as compared to frequency terms. Participants were able to reliably distinguish four frequency and intensity terms at both measuring times. Overall congruency between patients was larger for intensity terms in comparison to frequency terms. Conclusions The present results indicate that both frequency and intensity terms can be applied as verbal anchors for clinical self-report scales. However, if longitudinal assessment is intended, our results indicate that frequency terms should be used as they showed slightly greater stability across time. Generally, the present study suggests that no more than four different verbal anchors should be used together in rating scales as especially older patients and those with low lexical experience would not be able to reasonably differentiate more than these.

A Generalized Measurement Model to Quantify Health: The Multi-Attribute Preference Response Model
Paul F. M. Krabbe
PLOS ONE , 2013, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0079494
Abstract: After 40 years of deriving metric values for health status or health-related quality of life, the effective quantification of subjective health outcomes is still a challenge. Here, two of the best measurement tools, the discrete choice and the Rasch model, are combined to create a new model for deriving health values. First, existing techniques to value health states are briefly discussed followed by a reflection on the recent revival of interest in patients’ experience with regard to their possible role in health measurement. Subsequently, three basic principles for valid health measurement are reviewed, namely unidimensionality, interval level, and invariance. In the main section, the basic operation of measurement is then discussed in the framework of probabilistic discrete choice analysis (random utility model) and the psychometric Rasch model. It is then shown how combining the main features of these two models yields an integrated measurement model, called the multi-attribute preference response (MAPR) model, which is introduced here. This new model transforms subjective individual rank data into a metric scale using responses from patients who have experienced certain health states. Its measurement mechanism largely prevents biases such as adaptation and coping. Several extensions of the MAPR model are presented. The MAPR model can be applied to a wide range of research problems. If extended with the self-selection of relevant health domains for the individual patient, this model will be more valid than existing valuation techniques.
LISA A low Resolution MIR /FIR Imaging Spectrograph for SOFIA
Alfred Krabbe,Juergen Wolf
Physics , 1999,
Abstract: LISA is a proposed low resolution (R~15-30) imaging spectrometer for SOFIA, the American-German Stratospheric Observatory for Far Infrared Astronomy. Covering the wavelength range from 40micron to 220micron with three channels, LISA provides diffraction limited spectroscopy for each pixel within a rectangular field of view (FOV). The FOV sizes for the channels are 18x11 arcsec for 40 to 70micron, 32x19arcsec for 70-120 micron, and 22x22arcsec for 120-220micron, each channel upgradable to about twice the linear size. LISA will be able to address a variety of astrophysical topic, in particular on faint targets. Spatially resolved temperature distribution of dust emission will be studied in the environments of young and evolved stars, star forming regions, as well as in nuclear regions of nearby galaxies. Spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of distant galaxies will be determined in search for cold gas components. LISA's spectral resolution will be high enough to search for broad spectral features (e.g. PAHs, ices). The optical design, the mechanical layout, the estimated sensitivity, and the scientific potential of such an instrument is briefly discussed.
En la Realidad. Hacia Metodologías de Investigación Descoloniales
Tabula Rasa , 2011,
Abstract: this paper addresses the issue of colonialism in anthropological methodologies, and sketches a proposal to transcend it. it criticizes the knowledge divide, implicit in fieldwork practice, as well as the concepts of researcher's critical distance and theoretical integrity. instead, it puts forward the methodological proximity and underlines the significance of recognizing scientific validation criteria depend on the degree sciences serve the aims of liberation -goals that are fixed in reality with the individuals we are working with.
En la realidad. Hacia metodologías de investigación descoloniales
Julia Suárez-Krabbe
Tabula Rasa , 2011,
