Abstract: Synthetic organic photochemistry, the chemistry of excited states of a molecule, differs from the ground state chemistry and provides a simple pathway to complicated structures, heavily obtainable by a classic synthetic approach. In this paper the polycyclic structures with oxygen, prepared by photochemical methodology of new o-substituted furan heterostilbenes are reviewed. The photochemistry of β-(2-furyl)-substituted-o-divinylbenzenes 6,13,15, β,β-di(2-furyl)-substituted o-divinylbenzenes 18-20, aryl and heteroaryl analogues of 2,3-distyrylfurans 33-36 is described. Due to steric reasons, on irradiation of β-(3-substituted-2-furyl)-o-divinylbenzenes 6, the preferred photoreaction was the intramolecular [2+2]-cycloaddition and formation of the bicyclo[2.1.1]hexenes 10 along with the formation of the corresponding phenanthrenes 12. On the other hand, furan analogues 6 and 13 give bicyclo[3.2.1]octadiene structures in very good yield. Di-substituted o-divinylbenzene derivatives 18-20 (with a hexatriene system as part of the aromatic ring) give bicyclo[3.2.1]octadiene derivatives 21-23 by intramolecular photocycloaddition and cyclophane derivatives 24-26 by intermolecular [2+2] two-fold photoaddition reaction. Compound 20 is the most selective of these o-divinylbenzenes yielding only the exo-bicyclo[3.2.1]octadiene derivative 23 at low concentrations, and only the cyclophane derivative 26 at high concentrations. This reaction to 23 and 26 is due - intra- or intermolecular complexation. Contrary to these results, on the irradiation of the aryl and heteroaryl analogues of 2,3-distyrylfurans 33-36 (with a hexatriene system as part of the heteroaromatic ring) different intra- and intermolecular processes have been observed. By intramolecular [2+2]-cycloaddition, this hexatriene system gives the phototransposition products. Also observed are stilbenes and phenanthrenes as secondary products obtained from the primary formed intermolecular cyclobutane adducts.

Abstract: As part of the celebration of the International Year of Chemistry - 2011, the 70th anniversary of the first adamantane synthesis was marked in Zagreb. This article addresses the retrospect of the synthesis of adamantane by Prelog, as well as presents a review of the research in adamantane chemistry in Zagreb from 1971 to the present day. Some research results of the application of the adamantane molecule in other systems were also described, e.g. adamantane crown ethers, dipyrromethanes and bisureas, as well as photochemistry of adamantylphthalimides and photochemical preparation of adamantane quinone methides.
Anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity of Balanites aegyptiaca in experimental animal models

Abstract: The anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect of ethanolic and petroleum ether extracts of Balanites aegyptiaca were evaluated in experimental animals. We have determined the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity of ethanolic and petroleum ether extracts of dried aerial parts of Balanites aegyptiaca by oral administration at doses of 300 and 600 mg/kg/day of body weight to healthy animals. The extracts were studied for their anti-inflammatory activity in carrageenan-induced hind paw edema in rats and the paw volume was measured plethysmometrically at 0 and 3h after injection. The ethanolic and petroleum ether extracts were also evaluated for analgesic activity using Eddy′s hot plate method and tail-flick method in albino rats. The ethanolic and petroleum ether extracts of Balanites aegyptiaca, significantly (P< 0.05) reduced carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats and analgesic activity evidenced by increase in the reaction time by Eddy′s hot plate method and tail-flick method in albino mice. The ethanolic and petroleum ether extracts showed a greater anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect comparative to the standard drugs, indomethacin and diclofenac sodium respectively. The present results indicated the ethanolic extract of Balanites aegyptiaca exhibited more significant activity than petroleum ether in the treatment of pain and inflammation.
Characterization of duplex hard coatings with additional ion implantation

Abstract: In this paper, we present the results of a study of TiN thin fi lms which are deposited by a Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) and Ion Beam Assisted Deposition (IBAD). In the present investigation the subsequent ion implantation was provided with N+2 ions. The ion implantation was applied to enhance the mechanical properties of surface. The thin film deposition process exerts a number of eff ects such as crystallographic orientation, morphology, topography, densifi cation of the fi lms. The evolution of the microstructure from porous and columnar grains to densel packed grains is accompanied by changes in mechanical and physical properties. A variety of analytic techniques were used for characterization, such as scratch test, calo test, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), X-ray diff raction (XRD) and Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX).
Surface layer properties of the workpiece material in high performance grinding

Abstract: This paper focuses on the development of high temperatures in the cutting zone during high performance grinding. In order to identify the infl uence of grinding temperature on surface integrity, temperatures were measured in the workpiece surface layer under diff erent machining conditions. Beside this, under the same conditions, the surface layer properties of the workpiece material were determined through metallographic examination. Microstructureand microhardness of the workpiece surface layer, as well as the burned surfaces and microcracks phenomena were investigated. The conducted experimental investigations allow the surface layer properties of the workpiece material in high performance grinding to be defined.

Slow switching in a population of delayed pulse-coupled oscillators

Abstract: We show that peculiar collective dynamics called slow switching arises in a population of leaky integrate-and-fire oscillators with delayed, all-to-all pulse-couplings. By considering the stability of cluster states and symmetry possessed by our model, we argue that saddle connections between a pair of the two-cluster states are formed under general conditions. Slow switching appears as a result of the system's approach to the saddle connections. It is also argued that such saddle connections easy to arise near the bifurcation point where the state of perfect synchrony loses stability. We develop an asymptotic theory to reduce the model into a simpler form, with which an analytical study of cluster states becomes possible.
Prequantization of the moduli space of flat connections over a four-manifold

Abstract: We introduce a symplectic structure on the space of connections in a G-principal bundle over a four-manifold and the Hamiltonian action on it of the group of gauge transformations which are trivial on the boundary. The symplectic reduction becomes the moduli space of flat connections over the manifold. On the moduli space of flat connections we shall construct a hermitian line bundle with connection whose curvature is given by the symplectic form. This is the Chern-Simons prequantum line bundle. The group of gauge transformations on the boundary of the base manifold acts on the moduli space of flat connections by an infinitesimally symplectic way. This action is lifted to the prequantum line bundle by its abelian extension.
Chern-Simons pre-quantization over four-manifolds

Abstract: We introduce a pre-symplectic structure on the space of connections in a G-principal bundle over a four-manifold and a Hamiltonian action on it of the group of gauge transformations that are trivial on the boundary. The moment map is given by the square of curvature so that the 0-level set is the space of flat connections. Thus the moduli space of flat connections is endowed with a pre-symplectic structure. In case when the four-manifold is null-cobordant we shall construct, on the moduli space of connections, as well as on that of flat connections, a hermitian line bundle with connection whose curvature is given by the pre-symplectic form. This is the Chern-Simons pre-quantum line bundle. The group of gauge transformations on the boundary of the base manifold acts on the moduli space of flat connections by an infinitesimally symplectic way. When the base manifold is a 4-dimensional disc we show that this action is lifted to the pre-quantum line bundle by its abelian extension. The geometric description of the latter is related to the 4-dimensional Wess-Zumino-Witten model. The previous version of this arxiv text had several incoincidence with the published article in the Differential Geometry and its Applications vol.29, so the author corrected them.
