International Journal of Green Pharmacy , 2009,
Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the antiinflammatory effect of the crude extract of Lotus pedunculatus. Aerial parts of Lotus pedunculatus were extracted by maceration with ethanol 96%. The solvent was evaporated under low pressure at 55°C to dryness, yielding crude extract. The antiinflammatory effects of Lotus pedunculatus were analyzed using carrageenan-induced mouse pleurisy. Significance was determined by analysis of variance, Dunnett′s or Student′s t -tests. Values of P < 0.05 were considered significant. The crude extract of Lotus pedunculatus inhibited leukocyte, neutrophil, myeloperoxidase, and adenosine-deaminase activities, as well as exudation, nitric oxide, interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels ( P < 0.05). These results indicate that Lotus pedunculatus has an important antiinflammatory action and its inhibitory activity may be due to not only to the inhibition of proinflammatory mediators, but also to the inhibition of the activated leukocytes.

International Journal of Green Pharmacy , 2010,
Abstract: Lotus corniculatus (Fabaceae) is considered a forage plant utilized as food for ruminants in the south of Brazil. This herb is also actually used to treat intestinal infection in these animals. In our experiments, we evaluated the anti-bacterial activity of crude extract from L. corniculatus var. Sγo Gabriel were assayed against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterium. The crude extracted did not show any anti-bacterial activity, but the hexane fraction did on Bacillus cereus (MIC=100 μg/mL) and on Enterococcus faecalis, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, and Providencia alcalifaciens (MIC=600, 800 or 1000 μg/mL). The Ethyl acetate fraction (AcOEt) also showed important anti-bacterial activity on Bacillus cereus, E. faecalis, and Acinetobacter calcoaceticus (MIC=800 μg/mL). The oleanolic acid isolated from hexane fraction showed the same effect on Staphylococcus aureus methycillin-resistant (MIC=100 μg/mL), L. monocytogenes (MIC=25 μg/mL), and Bacillus cereus (MIC=25 μg/mL). Further, Kaempferitrin isolated from ethyl acetate fraction has also shown anti-bacterial activity on Shighella flexinerii (MIC=100 μg/mL), Salmonella typhimurium (MIC=100 μg/mL), A. calcoaceticus (MIC=100 μg/mL), E. faecalis (MIC=3.9 μg/mL), and Bacillus cereus (MIC=8.5 μg/mL). This study suggests that L. corniculatus var. Sγo Gabriel have potential pharmacological property for a new anti-bacterial drug development.
The Tumor Border Configuration of Colorectal Cancer as a Histomorphological Prognostic Indicator

Frontiers in Oncology , 2014, DOI: 10.3389/fonc.2014.00029
Abstract: Histomorphological features of colorectal cancers (CRC) represent valuable prognostic indicators for clinical decision making. The invasive margin is a central feature for prognostication shaped by the complex processes governing tumor–host interaction. Assessment of the tumor border can be performed on standard paraffin sections and shows promise for integration into the diagnostic routine of gastrointestinal pathology. In aggressive CRC, an extensive dissection of host tissue is seen with loss of a clear tumor–host interface. This pattern, termed “infiltrative tumor border configuration” has been consistently associated with poor survival outcome and early disease recurrence of CRC-patients. In addition, infiltrative tumor growth is frequently associated with presence of adverse clinicopathological features and molecular alterations related to aggressive tumor behavior including BRAFV600 mutation. In contrast, a well-demarcated “pushing” tumor border is seen frequently in CRC-cases with low risk for nodal and distant metastasis. A pushing border is a feature frequently associated with mismatch-repair deficiency and can be used to identify patients for molecular testing. Consequently, assessment of the tumor border configuration as an additional prognostic factor is recommended by the AJCC/UICC to aid the TNM-classification. To promote the assessment of the tumor border configuration in standard practice, consensus criteria on the defining features and method of assessment need to be developed further and tested for inter-observer reproducibility. The development of a standardized quantitative scoring system may lay the basis for verification of the prognostic associations of the tumor growth pattern in multivariate analyses and clinical trials. This article provides a comprehensive review of the diagnostic features, clinicopathological associations, and molecular alterations associated with the tumor border configuration in early stage and advanced CRC.

Frontiers in Oncology , 2013, DOI: 10.3389/fonc.2013.00265
Abstract: Background: Approximately 20% of all colorectal cancers are hypothesized to arise from the “serrated pathway” characterized by mutation in BRAF, high-level CpG Island Methylator Phenotype, and microsatellite instability/mismatch repair (MMR)-deficiency. MMR-deficient cancers show frequent losses of Cdx2, a homeodomain transcription factor. Here, we determine the predictive value of Cdx2 expression for MMR-deficiency and investigate changes in expression between primary cancers and matched lymph node metastases.
A alteridade constitutiva em aulas de inglês como língua-cultura estrangeira: a perspectiva do princípio dialógico bakhtiniano
Figueredo, Carla Janaina;
Bakhtiniana: Revista de Estudos do Discurso , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S2176-45732012000100005
Abstract: the main purpose of this paper is to discuss how dialogicity which is present in the development of brazilian students of english and their irish teacher's discourse practices influences their subjectivities' constitution and expression in the classroom context. based on some elements that make up the bakhtinian dialogical principle we notice that the other's presence throughout the interactions with this study's participants represents the fundamental factor to reveal their viewpoints as well as to rebuild them before their interlocutors, which can guarantee significant moments for the appropriation of english as a foreign language-culture.
