Abstract: (1R*,4S*,4aR*,9aS*,10S*)-10-Hydroxy-10-phenyl-1,4a,9a,10-tetrahydro-1,4-methanoanthracen-9(4H)-one (1c) was prepared for the elucidation of the reaction mechanism of intramolecular hydroalkoxylation of alkenes catalyzed by gold nanoclusters stabilized by a hydrophilic polymer, poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (Au:PVP). It was found that the reaction proceeded via anti-addition of alcohol to the alkene assisted by p-activation of the gold clusters, which is the same mechanism as the hydroamination by toluenesulfonamides.

Abstract: demersal fishing of important commercial fishes (lophius gastrophisus, urophisys brasiliensis and genipterus brasiliensis) and crustaceans (chaceon ramosae and chaceon sp.) along the upper slope off southern brazil has increased dramatically in the last decade. compilation of available data on the distribution of azooxanthellate corals between 24° and 35° s, compared with the distribution of bottom-longline, bottom-gillnets, trawl and trap fisheries shows that commercial fishing takes place over coral areas, providing evidence deep-sea reefs are important reservoirs of deep marine biodiversity. since the initial phase of exploitation by demersal fisheries, onboard observers are describing large captures of corals as "bycatch" suggesting deep-sea communities are being destroyed even before being studied. in order to ensure protection of deep-sea coral ecosystems and economic sustainability of demersal fisheries in southern brazilian waters, adoption of excluded fishing areas in those locations where azooxanthellate scleractinia occur is strongly recommended.

Abstract: The 120 presently recognized genera and seven subgenera of the azooxanthellate Scleractinia are keyed using gross morphological characters of the corallum. All genera are illustrated with calicular and side views of coralla. All termes used in the key are defined in an illustrated glossary. A table of all species-level keys, both comprehensive and faunistic, is provided covering the last 40 years.

Abstract: This study presents the records of Madrepora oculata Linnaeus, 1758, Solenosmilia variabilis Duncan, 1873, and Trochocyathus laboreli Cairns, 2000, for the southern Brazilian continental shelf and slope, and the extension of the occurrence of Lophelia pertusa (Linnaeus, 1758). All specimens were collected in Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul states (125-822 m deep). These species had only been recorded previously on the southeastern, northeastern and northern coasts of Brazil, and L. pertusa had only recently been recorded around Paraná state. Description, distribution and illustration are given. A short discussion on the ecological importance of the colonial species is provided.

Abstract: O grande desenvolvimento da fotografia, observado nos últimos anos, cm destaque para a fotografia digital, trouxe novos horizontes na utiliza o da imagem nos trabalhos científicos, em especial da oceanografia. Antigamente, a fotografia documental tinha grande importancia, principalmente para registrar os grandes feitos da humanidade, das descobertas às grandes expedi es. Ao longo dos anos, os equipamentos apresentaram grande evolu o tecnológica, sendo que, na década passada, o surgimento da fotografia digital ampliou bastante a utiliza o cada vez maior da imagem nos trabalhos científicos, seja pela rapidez na aquisi o, seja pela facilidade no tratamento e no processamento das mesmas, além do surgimento das publica es online, que reduziram bastante os custos editoriais. Atualmente, o desenvolvimento de programas de computador para estudo e análise da imagem tem ganhado destaque, como equipamentos e programas específicos para identifica o do zooplancton marinho, como por exemplo o Zooscan, que auxilia mediante maior rapidez no processo de triagem e identifica o, trazendo maior eficiência e agilidade para o estudo ecológico e oceanográfico.
Klee-Minty's LP and Upper Bounds for Dantzig's Simplex Method

Abstract: Kitahara and Mizuno (2010) get two upper bounds for the number of different basic feasible solutions generated by Dantzig's simplex method. The size of the bounds highly depends on the ratio between the maximum and minimum values of all the positive elements of basic feasible solutions. In this paper, we show some relations between the ratio and the number of iterations by using an example of LP, which is a simple variant of Klee-Minty's LP. We see that the ratio for the variant is equal to the number of iterations by Dantzig's simplex method for solving it. This implies that it is impossible to get a better upper bound than the ratio. We also give improved results of the upper bounds.
A Bound for the Number of Different Basic Solutions Generated by the Simplex Method

Abstract: In this short paper, we give an upper bound for the number of different basic feasible solutions generated by the simplex method for linear programming problems having optimal solutions. The bound is polynomial of the number of constraints, the number of variables, and the ratio between the minimum and the maximum values of all the positive elements of primal basic feasible solutions. When the primal problem is nondegenerate, it becomes a bound for the number of iterations. We show some basic results when it is applied to special linear programming problems. The results include strongly polynomiality of the simplex method for Markov Decision Problem by Ye and utilize its analysis.
