Another Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy? A Case Report of Retinal Cavernous Haemangioma Treated with Intravitreal Bevacizumab, Initially Labelled as Persistent Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy  [PDF]

Abstract: We present a case of Retinal Cavernous Haemangioma treated with Intravitreal Bevacizumab, which was initially labelled as persistent proliferative diabetic retinopathy with multiple episodes of vitreous haemorrhage. These lesions can be confused with new retinal vessels in diabetics and if correctly diagnosed unnecessary photocoagulation can be avoided. Our patient received a course of three intravitreal Bevacizumab injections (1.25 mg/0.05 ml) in order to stop the leakage from the retinal cavernous haemangioma lesions and prevent another episode of vitreous haemorrhage. No intraoperative or postoperative complications were seen. Twenty-two months following treatment there was no recurrence of vitreous haemorrhage.

Abstract: In this work the performance evaluation of directly driven Reverse Osmosis (RO) water desalination system by Photovoltaic (PV) arrays is investigated by a novice method. Reverse Osmosis water desalination system needs continuous supply of energy and on the other hand energy from the PV is intermittent in nature. The energy consumption of RO plant is strong function of clean water (permeate) flow rate and system pressure and they needs to be tuned to match the maximum power provided by the PV arrays. In this work a novice method to tune the RO system parameters by manipulating the position of the valve at the brine side of the RO system is proposed. A simple perturb and observe algorithm is used for automatic control of the valve position. The performance of the proposed battery less system is compared with a conventional system using PV, charge controller and battery. The proposed directly driven battery-less system provides more water per day than battery operated system.

Abstract: The black hole is a region in space where things may fall into it but nothing can come out. We present a study of the physics of a black hole using a quantum field theory frame based on the WZW model in a suitable mathematical frame. Based on the Schwarzschild metric, we show the different regions of our universe with the present singularities. Then we introduce the calculation of a black hole mass using the perturbation theory. We further discuss Hawking radiation and its quantum mechanical implications. At some limits, the space time can represent a black hole with a singularity hidden by the horizon.

Abstract: This study employed autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model to examines the impact of various fiscal policy variables, such as, productive expenditures, non-productive expenditures, distortionary taxes and non-distortionary taxes on economic growth in Pakistan in the framework of endogenous growth model. Our results revealed that non-productive expenditures and non-distortionary taxation have neutral impact on economic growth in both the long run and short run. Productive expenditures affect economic growth positively and significantly. Distortionary taxes retard economic growth. Human capital proxied by secondary school enrollment enhances per capita GDP. Impact of labor force on GDP per capita is negative and insignificant.
Effect of Potassium Levels on the Yield of Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)

Abstract: Effect of various levels of potassium on the yield of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) was studied at the Agronomic Research Area, Gomal University, D.I. Khan, during autumn 1997. The highest 1000-seed weight (53.71g) was obtained from the plot, fertilized with 150kg potassium ha-1, while the minimum 1000-seed weight (46.41 g) was obtained in control plots. the highest seed yield (4153 kg ha-1) was also obtained in plots where 150 kg potassium per hectare was applied. The lowest seed yield was recorded in control plots (3402 kg ha-1). It can be suggested from these results that potassium can be applied up to 150 kg ha-1 to obtain high seed yield of sunflower and to maintain the fertility regarding potassium level in the soil of D.I.Khan.

Abstract: In this work, a new device for tidal energy conversion is presented. The main purpose of this research is to investigate the energy conversion of tidal energy into electrical one by building a small scale prototype using a pneumatic system representing the energy conversion device. The tidal energy conversion device consists of a concrete in cylindrical shape, a moving base that moves inside the concrete cylindrical body and two single acting pistons connected to a power turbine. The system specifications that mainly affect the amount of energy are the spring stiffness and hose diameter. It was found that there is a possibility to convert the tidal energy into electrical energy using the designed prototype. The maximum amount of electricity generated using the proposed prototype was about 5 Volts.

Abstract: in the present challenging dynamic environment, innovation is considered as a capability that renews the competitive advantage of a company. in recent years, considerable effort has been made to examine the factors that affect innovation in organizations. knowledge management and total quality management, which play an important role in the contemporary management progress, are among the factors investigated. on the one hand, knowledge management has been recognized as an enabler that can deploy innovation by creating, storing, transferring, and applying knowledge, while on the other hand, the implementation of total quality management practices are addressed as one of the important factors that can influence innovation in a positive way. lately, although a few researchers have shown some interest in the relationship of total quality management and knowledge management and their have not reached a consensus to conceptualize this relation. looking at it from the methodological perspective, this problem can be tackled by using the joint variance analysis method where it can demonstrate correlation among independent variables and the effect of them on innovation. this study aims to propose a framework that shows how total quality management and knowledge management are reciprocally related to each other and how this affinity can impact innovation.
Effect of Rhizobium sp., on Growth of Pathogenic Fungi under in vitro Conditions

Abstract: In a laboratory study chickpea root nodulating bacterium Rhizobium sp., strain Thal-8 significantly inhibited the growth of pathogenic fungi (Alternaria alternata, Fusarium sp. Ascochyta rabiei, Drechslera sp. and Curvularia sp.) in potato dextrose agar media. The inhibition rate displayed differences in accordance with different fungi cultures. However, the inhibitory effect of Rhizobium sp., strain Thal-8 occurred most on pure cultures growth of Alternaria alternata and Drechslera sp. (54 and 45%, respectively) and least on Curvularia sp. (3%).
Pupil dilation with intracameral lidocaine during phacoemulsification: Benefits for the patient and surgeon

Abstract: Topical and/or intracameral administration of anticholinergic and/or sympathomimetic mydriatic agents which are usually used for pupillary dilation during cataract surgery, have some disadvantages such as slow onset of dilation and adverse ocular and systemic effects. We evaluated intracameral injection of preservative-free 1% lidocaine without using any preoperative or intraoperative mydriatics to induce pupil dilation in 31 consecutive eyes scheduled for phacoemulsification cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation. Pupil diameter was measured before and 90 sec after intracameral lidocaine injection. After intracameral lidocaine injection, the mean pupil diameter was significantly greater than the baseline measurement (P< 0.001). No additional mydriatics were needed up to the end of the operations. Intracameral preservative-free lidocaine 1% has a rapid and effective mydriasis that could be a safe alternative to topical and intracameral mydriatics in phacoemulsification.
Behavioral Finance: Shaping the Decisions of Small Investors of Lahore Stock Exchange

Abstract: Investors in the stock market are supposed to act according to the rationalism provided by the financial theories. This paper tries to investigate the same phenomenon by looking into the decision making process of the small investors in Lahore Stock Exchange. A survey methodology was used to seek the responses of randomly selected 300 small investors trading in Lahore Stock Exchange. This study found that the decision making process of the small investors seem to be influenced by the behavioral finance theories rather than conventional financial theories. Our findings confirm the realities put forward by the prospect theory and regret aversion theory while heuristics also seem to play their role in decision making process of the small investors in Lahore.
