Case Reports in Surgery , 2013, DOI: 10.1155/2013/840741
Abstract: Anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary trunk, also known as Garland-Bland-White syndrome, is an extremely rare but potentially fatal congenital cardiovascular anomaly, and it often exists as an isolated condition. We hereby report an adult female who was admitted for mild chest discomfort and was accidentally diagnosed to have anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary trunk. This anomaly was simply repaired by using a bovine pericardial patch to obliterate the anomalous opening in the pulmonary trunk and a single coronary artery bypass graft. This report highlights the characteristic events of the anomaly in an adult with only mild symptoms. 1. Introduction Anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary trunk, also known as Garland-Bland-White syndrome, is an extremely rare but potentially fatal congenital cardiovascular anomaly, and it often exists as an isolated condition. Some reports have found its association with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), complete atrioventricular septal defect, and aortopulmonary (AP) window, which arises secondary to failure of septation in the aorticopulmonary trunk [1–10]. 2. Case Report The patient is a 36-year-old female school teacher who was in her normal state of health until two years prior to the present admission when the patient started to feel occasional pressure-like chest discomfort and palpitation. The patient went to a local hospital for help. Mild mitral regurgitation was told, and the patient was then discharged with medical management as an outpatient. However, one month prior to the present admission, the patient’s chest tightness, although still mild on onset, had increased in frequency. The patient went back to the same hospital for further evaluation. This time, a cardiac catheterization was performed and accidentally revealed anomalous drainage of left coronary artery (LCA), including all its branches (like the left anterior descending artery, left circumflex artery, and the left diagonal artery), into the main pulmonary artery. Single right coronary artery (RCA) originated from the aorta, and mild mitral regurgitation was seen concurrently in the cardiac catheterization. Upon recommendations from the patient’s family, the patient came to our hospital and was admitted for surgical managements. After the patient was admitted into our service, chest X-ray, ECG, carotid ultrasound, pulmonary function test, pressure volume recording, blood analysis, and viral check were done and all revealed normal findings. No fever, leukocytosis, or any sign

Abstract: As a model terpenoid, the ginsenoside is one of Panax ginseng's main effective components. This article has carried on an overview of biosynthetic pathway of terpenoids and the HMG-CoA reductases. The massive research materials indicated that the HMG-CoA reductases is the first key enzyme of the regulation of the mevalonic acid way, which has some reference value to promote the research on the biosynthetic pathway and the regulation of ginsenoside.

Abstract: In order to trap more sunlight onto the crystalline silicon solar cell and improve the photo-electric conversion efficiency, it is very important to study the optical scattering properties of silver nanoparticles on silicon wafer. Based on localized surface plasmon effect and MIE scattering theory, using numerical calculation by Matlab, the scattering properties of solar spetra for different radius and density of silver nanoparticle are investigated in theory. The dependence of the optimal optical transmittance on the radius and density of Ag nanoparticle is obtained. Furthermore, it is found that the dipole peaks is redshifted and high mode peaks gradually emerges. Firstly this paper gives the variation of the best Ag nanoparticle density with the radius quantitively, the theoretical method calculating the transmittance of the nanoparticle antireflection film is also established. As a result, the simple functional expression of transmittance is deduced in this work, which provides a theoretical guidance for experimental research.

Abstract: AIM: To develop a hepatocyte cell line, we immortalized primary porcine hepatocytes with a retroviral vector SSR#69 containing the Simian Virus 40 T antigen (SV40Tag).METHODS: We first established a method of porcine hepatocyte isolation with a modified four-step retrograde perfusion technique. Then the porcine hepatocytes were immortalized with retroviral vector SSR#69 expressing SV40T and hygromycin-resistance genes flanked by paired loxP recombination targets. SV40T cDNA in the expanded cells was subsequently excised by Cre/LoxP site-specific recombination.RESULTS: The resultant hepatocytes with high viability (97%) were successfully immortalized with retroviral vector SSR#69. One of the immortalized clones showed the typical morphological appearance, TJPH-1, and was selected by clone rings and expanded in culture. After excision of the SV40T gene with Cre-recombinase, cells stopped growing. The population of reverted cells exhibited the characteristics of differentiated hepatocytes.CONCLUSION: In conclusion, we herein describe a modified method of hepatocyte isolation and subsequently established a porcine hepatocyte cell line mediated by retroviral transfer and site-specific recombination.

Abstract: Combined en bloc liver/pancreas transplantation (CLPT) was used primarily in the treatment of otherwise non-resectable upper abdominal malignancy. In fact, a more appropriate indication is in patients with liver disease and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Here, we report on two successful cases of CLPT at our hospital. One was a patient with non-resectable advanced liver cancer. The recipient survived for 23 mo and finally died of recurrent tumor. The other was a patient with severe biliary complication after orthotopic liver transplantation and preoperative IDDM. We performed CLPT with a modified surgical technique of preserving the native pancreas. He is currently liver-disease- and insulin-free more than 27 mo post-transplant. Based on our experience in two cases of abdominal cluster transplantation, we describe the technical details of CLPT and a modification of the surgical procedure.
Analyses of Move Structure and Verb Tense of Research Article Abstracts in Applied Linguistics
Fan-ping Tseng
International Journal of English Linguistics , 2011, DOI: 10.5539/ijel.v1n2p27
Abstract: This study examined 90 research article abstracts in three applied linguistics journals (i.e., TESOL Quarterly, Applied Linguistics, and Language Learning) from two dimensions: the move structure features and the verb tense of each move. The results showed that the abstracts analyzed tended to take a four-move structure instead of a five-move one as proposed in literature. In addition, since some publishers have word limits on abstract length, authors would usually follow the publisher’s guideline accordingly, thus there existing some differences concerning the move structure features among the abstracts in the three journals. In terms of the verb tense in each move, the preferred pattern was as follows: the present tense usually occurred in the first, second, and fifth move, while the past tense was often used in the third and fourth moves. It was also found that there were some variations between the abstracts written by native speakers and nonnative speakers of English. It is hoped that with detailed analyses of abstracts, the results of this study may serve as a complement to the guidelines for novice writers to construct a proper research article abstract in applied linguistics.
Introducing Literature to an EFL Classroom: Teacher’s Presentations and Students’ Perceptions
Fan-ping Tseng
Journal of Language Teaching and Research , 2010, DOI: 10.4304/jltr.1.1.53-65
Abstract: This study documents a teacher-researcher’s presentations of 24 literary works to a class of 28 Taiwanese EFL senior high school students during a fourteen-week experiment, and reports on those students’ perceptions of the texts introduced and their attitudes towards literature in general. In preparing literary texts, the teacher explored the notion of computer assisted literature teaching (CALT), capitalizing on the Internet resources to prepare plot summaries of novels and plays. Some supplementary media materials were also used in the literature presentations. Results of participants’ responses to a 50-item questionnaire showed that most of the students like the presented novels most, followed by plays, short stories, and then poems. Furthermore, about half of the students like to read literary works and also like to be introduced to literature. Specifically, students like to read contemporary literature rather than classic literature, and such works as movie novels, realistic fiction, fantasies, and mysteries are their favorites. In the end, the author argues that there is low literature threshold, if any, for teachers to cross before they can introduce literature to their EFL students.
EFL Students’ Yahoo! Online Bilingual Dictionary Use Behavior
Fan-ping Tseng
English Language Teaching , 2009, DOI: 10.5539/elt.v2n3p98
Abstract: This study examined 38 EFL senior high school students’ Yahoo! online dictionary look-up behavior. In a language laboratory, the participants read an article on a reading sheet, underlined any words they did not know, looked up their unknown words in Yahoo! online bilingual dictionary, and wrote down the definitions of their looked-up words. The participants’ dictionary look-up records were collected, their look-up errors were categorized into four types, and their look-up behavior was interpreted through seven patterns. The results showed that some participants looked up a word in the dictionary without removing the inflection of it, looked up individual words instead of a fixed expression, did not make good use of the example sentences or phrases provided by the dictionary, or did not take the context into consideration when selecting an appropriate meaning for a word. Based on the students’ dictionary look-up errors and behavior patterns, pedagogical implications concerning dictionary look-up instruction are discussed.
