Abstract: a classificatory system of nursing practice in collective health (international classification of nursing practices in collective health? - classifica??o internacional das práticas de enfermagem em saúde coletiva?) has been adopted in curitiba's primary care health services as part of its policy. this study, descriptive and exploratory, seeks to show nursing's contributions to epidemiological profile improvement in children's health. the data was collected through the reports about nursing diagnoses from the municipal computer database, and was analyzed using the nursing praxical intervention theory in collective health. the results have shown that children's health profiles in this municipality are better than in the remainder of the country. nursing practices, qualified by using nursing diagnoses and a classificatory system, have allowed assessing improvement in health-illness processes. finally nursing has been able to identify health needs and diagnoses, strengths and impairments of health-illness processes.

Abstract: objective: to identify factors associated with nipple trauma in women breastfeeding exclusively in a maternity unit. methods: this was a case-control study that recruited 146 recently-delivered mothers in rooming-in wards: 73 cases, defined as women with nipple trauma, and 73 controls, defined as women free from this pathology. women breastfeeding exclusively were tested daily for a diagnosis of nipple injury, identified using a magnifying glass. sociodemographic, obstetric and neonatal variables were studied. a logistic regression model was used for statistical analysis. results: cases and controls proved to be comparable in terms of their sociodemographic variables, although the women with nipple trauma were more likely not to be living with a partner. the following variables were found to be factors associated with nipple trauma: primiparity (or 3.16; 95%ci 1.19-8.42), not living with a partner (or 3.25; 95%ci 1.18-8.93), turgid and/or engorged breasts (or 12.31; 95%ci 4.48-33.78), semi-protruding and/or malformed nipples (or 4.69; 95%ci 1.50-14.62), and depigmentation of nipples (or 13.98; 95%ci 4.43-44.06). conclusion: primiparity, not living with a partner, turgid and/or engorged breasts, semi-protruding and/or malformed nipples, and depigmentated nipples are associated with nipple trauma.

Abstract: the aim of the study was to identify the breast feeding position and holding variables related to nipple trauma. this case-control study assessed the onset of nipple trauma among women hospitalized at a university hospital in the city of s?o paulo, in 2004 and 2005. subjects were puerperae diagnosed with unilateral or bilateral nipple trauma. data analysis was performed using chi-square, student's t, and odds ratio tests (ci= 95%) and correspondence analysis. participants were 146 puerperal women and their newborns, being 73 cases and 73 controls. statistically significant position and holding variables for causing lesions were the following: newborns with their necks bent/contorted, chin away from the breast and lip-related defect (turned inward). trauma prevention at the beginning of breast feeding is crucial for continuing this practice. following adequate positioning is decisive for establishing effective and prolonged breast feeding.

Abstract: The chemical composition of ethanol extracts from samples of Brazilian propolis (EEPs) determined by HPLC and their activity against Trypanosoma cruzi, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Klebisiella pneumoniae, Candida albicans, Sporothrix schenckii and Paracoccidioides brasiliensis were determined. Based on the predominant botanical origin in the region of samples' collection, the 10 extracts were separated into three groups: A (B. dracunculifolia + Auraucaria spp), B (B. dracunculifolia) and C (Araucaria spp). Analysis by the multiple regression of all the extracts together showed a positive correlation, higher concentrations leading to higher biological effect, of S. aureus with p-coumaric acid (PCUM) and 3-(4-hydroxy-3-(oxo-butenyl)-phenylacrylic acid (DHCA1) and of trypomastigotes of T. cruzi with 3,5-diprenyl-4-hydroxycinnamic acid derivative 4 (DHCA4) and 2,2-dimethyl-6-carboxyethenyl-2H-1-benzopyran (DCBEN). When the same approach was employed for each group, due to the small number of observations, the statistical test gave unreliable results. However, an overall analysis revealed for group A an association of S. aureus with caffeic acid (CAF) and dicaffeoylquinic acid 3 (CAFQ3), of S. pneumoniae with CAFQ3 and monocaffeoylquinic acid 2 (CAFQ2) and of T. cruzi also with CAFQ3. For group B, a higher activity against S. pneumoniae was associated DCBEN and for T. cruzi with CAF. For group C no association was observed between the anitmicrobial effect and any component of the extracts. The present study reinforces the relevance of PCUM and derivatives, especially prenylated ones and also of caffeolyquinic acids, on the biological activity of Brazilian propolis.
