Ke Zhang, Guangtao Xue
Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) , 2010, DOI: 10.4236/wsn.2010.29080
Abstract: Currently, there are kinds of algorithms in order to detect real-time urban traffic condition. Most of these approaches consider speed of vehicles as a main metric to describe traffic situation. In this paper, we find out two important observations through several experiments. (1) In urban city, the speed of vehicles is influenced significantly by some factors such as traffic lights delay and road condition. The actual situation rarely satisfy hypothesis required for these solutions. Therefore, these traditional algorithms do not work well in practical environment. (2) Traffic volume on a road segment shows strong pattern and changes smoothly at adjacent time. This feature of traffic volume inspires us to define a metric: traffic-rate, which is used to detect traffic condition in real time. In our solution, we develop a novel traffic-detection algorithm based on original- destination (OD) matrix. We illustrate our approach and measure its performance in real environment. The performance evaluations confirm the effectiveness of our algorithm.

Assessing Money Laundering Risk of Financial Institutions with AHP: Supervisory Perspective  [PDF]
Ke Jia, Xi Zhao, Ling Zhang
Journal of Financial Risk Management (JFRM) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jfrm.2013.21004

This paper proposed a risk assessment model with which supervisory authorities can calculate the money laundering risk (MLR) level of financial institutions and make comparisons among multiple institutions. The model is based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and decomposes MLR into two second-tier criteria, i.e. Inherent Risk & Control Risk. AHP pair wise comparisons made by the experts from various fields are processed through AHP software to get the weight of each factor. Using this model, MLR of each financial institution could be obtained and certain comparison among them could be carried out.

Metagenomic and Metatranscriptomic Analysis of Microbial Community Structure and Gene Expression of Activated Sludge
Ke Yu, Tong Zhang
PLOS ONE , 2012, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0038183
Abstract: The present study applied both metagenomic and metatranscriptomic approaches to characterize microbial structure and gene expression of an activated sludge community from a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Hong Kong. DNA and cDNA were sequenced by Illumina Hi-seq2000 at a depth of 2.4 Gbp. Taxonomic analysis by MG-RAST showed bacteria were dominant in both DNA and cDNA datasets. The taxonomic profile obtained by BLAST against SILVA SSUref database and annotation by MEGAN showed that activated sludge was dominated by Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and Verrucomicrobia phyla in both DNA and cDNA datasets. Global gene expression annotation based on KEGG metabolism pathway displayed slight disagreement between the DNA and cDNA datasets. Further gene expression annotation focusing on nitrogen removal revealed that denitrification-related genes sequences dominated in both DNA and cDNA datasets, while nitrifying genes were also expressed in relative high levels. Specially, ammonia monooxygenase and hydroxylamine oxidase demonstrated the high cDNA/DNA ratios in the present study, indicating strong nitrification activity. Enzyme subunits gene sequences annotation discovered that subunits of ammonia monooxygenase (amoA, amoB, amoC) and hydroxylamine oxygenase had higher expression levels compared with subunits of the other enzymes genes. Taxonomic profiles of selected enzymes (ammonia monooxygenase and hydroxylamine oxygenase) showed that ammonia-oxidizing bacteria present mainly belonged to Nitrosomonas and Nitrosospira species and no ammonia-oxidizing Archaea sequences were detected in both DNA and cDNA datasets.
Stimulating Critical Thinking in a Virtual Learning Community with Instructor Moderations and Peer Reviews
Ke Zhang,Sacip Toker
Knowledge Management & E-Learning : an International Journal , 2011,
Abstract: This mixed methods study investigated the dynamic impacts of instructor moderations and peer reviews on critical thinking (CT) in a virtual learning community. Multiple data sets were collected from online discourses, participants’ written reflections, and learning artifacts, and analyzed and triangulated with both quantitative and qualitative methods. Both instructor moderations and peer reviews had great impacts on learner’s CT in multiple ways, and stimulated CT development throughout the semester. As learners grew with more CT skills, the needs for instructor moderations decreased; yet peer reviews peaked in terms of quantity, length, and depth of discussions. Peer reviews in this study also demonstrated effective questioning patterns, which were positively accepted by students being questioned or criticized, and resulted in changes and improvements in the final learning artifacts. Practical implications for online teaching and learning and community building are discussed, together with suggestions for future research.

Ke Zhang,Shiming Wang
Journal of Computers , 2011, DOI: 10.4304/jcp.6.8.1605-1612
Abstract: In order to realize precision measurement of parts, based on the analysis of existent evaluation methods for form errors, a hybrid evaluation method is provided in this paper. The hybrid global optimization algorithm based on ant colony optimization and simplex search method is proposed. The optimum model and the calculation process are introduced, where the planar straightness error is discussed as an example. The hybrid optimization algorithm can improve the efficiency and accuracy of searching in the whole field by gradually shrinking the area of optimization variable. Finally, a control experiment is carried out, and the calculation results by using different method such as the least square, simplex search, Powell optimum methods and GA, show that the hybrid evaluation method is feasible and satisfactory in the evaluation of form errors.

Ke Zhang,Shengze Wang
Journal of Computers , 2011, DOI: 10.4304/jcp.6.6.1094-1101
Abstract: Planar parallel controllable mechanism, which is a combination of two types of motor and mechanism, has better flexible transmission behavior. In this paper, the kinematics analysis for a planar parallel controllable five-bar mechanism is introduced. In order to improve kinematic performance of the controllable mechanism, an optimization design for the mechanism is performed with reference to kinematics objective function. A hybrid optimization algorithm which combines Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) with MATLAB Optimization Toolbox is proposed to solve the optimal design problem with constraint condition. Compared with conventional optimum evaluation methods such as Simplex search and Powell method, PSO algorithm can improve the efficiency of searching in the whole field by gradually shrinking the area of optimization variable. Compared to GA, PSO is easy to implement and there are few parameters to adjust. Finally, a numerical example and discuss are carried out, the simulation and analysis results show that the optimization method is feasible and satisfactory in the design of the controllable mechanism.
