Abstract: objective: the aim of this 2-year cohort study (2003 to 2005) was to investigate how caries experience, at initial lesions (early or non-cavited lesions) and cavited stages, predicts caries increment in permanent teeth in 7-10- year-olds. material and methods: the random sample of 765 children attending public schools in the city of piracicaba, sp, brazil, was divided into two groups: 423 children aged 7-8 years and 342 children aged 9-10 years. all subjects were examined by a calibrated examiner, using dental mirror and ball-ended probes, after tooth brushing and air-drying in an outdoor setting, based on the world health organization criteria. active caries with intact surfaces were also recorded as initial lesion (il). univariate analysis was used for statistical analysis (odds ratios and chi-square). results: the association between the dmft (decayed, missing and filled teeth) increment and the presence of il was significant only for 9-10-year-old children. the children with dmft>0 at baseline were more prone to have dmft increment, with the highest risk for caries increment occurring in children aged 7-8 years. conclusions: the predictors of caries increment were the presence (at baseline) of caries experience in permanent teeth for both age groups (7-8; 9-10-year-olds) and the presence of the il (at baseline) for 9-10-year-olds.

Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232011001100011
Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between malocclusion and self-perception of oral appearance/function, in 12/15-year-old brazilian adolescents. the cluster sample consisted of 717 teenagers attending 24 urban public (n=611) and 5 rural public (n=107) schools in maringá/pr. malocclusion was measured using the dental aesthetic index (dai), in accordance with who recommendations. a parental questionnaire was applied to collect information on esthetic perception level and oral variables related to oral health. univariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were performed. multiple logistic regression confirmed that for 12-year-old, missing teeth (or=2.865) and presence of openbite (open occlusal relationship) (or=2.865) were risk indicators for speech capability. with regard to 15-year-old, presence of mandibular overjet (horizontal overlap) (or=4.016) was a risk indicator for speech capability and molar relationship (or=1.661) was a risk indicator for chewing capability. the impact of malocclusion on adolescents' life was confirmed in this study. speech and chewing capability were associated with orthodontic deviations, which should be taken into consideration in oral health planning, to identify risk groups and improve community health services.

Abstract: the objective of the study was to develop regression models to describe the epidemiological profile of dental caries in 12-year-old children in an area of low prevalence of caries. two distinct random probabilistic samples of schoolchildren (n=1,763) attending public and private schools in piracicaba, southeastern brazil, were studied. regression models were estimated as a function of the most affected teeth using data collected in 2005 and were validated using a 2001 database. the mean (sd) dmft index was 1.7 (2.08) in 2001 and the regression equations estimated a dmft index of 1.67 (1.98), which corresponds to 98.2% of the dmft index in 2001. the study provided detailed data on the caries profile in 12-year-old children by using an updated analytical approach. regression models can be an accurate and feasible method that can provide valuable information for the planning and evaluation of oral health services.

Abstract: aim: to evaluate the influence of socioeconomic, clinical and demographic variables on caries experience in 5-year-old preschool children from piracicaba. methods: the sample consisted of 728 children attending 22 public (n=428) and 18 private (n=300) preschools. dental caries were measured using the dmft/dmfs indexes and by detecting initial caries lesion (il). gingivitis, crowding, spacing, fluorosis, and mouth breathing were also recorded. socioeconomic variables (monthly family income, number of people living in the household, parents' schooling, home ownership, and car ownership) were collected by means of a parental semi structured questionnaire. results: the mean (standard deviation) values for dmft and dmfs indexes were 1.30 (2.47) and 3.08 (7.55) respectively; and 62.2% of the children were caries-free. the mean (standard deviation) values for dmft+li and dmfs+li were 1.72 (3.36) and 3.45 (7.94), respectively and 59.7% were caries-free. by means of multiple logistic regression analyses, children with fluorosis (or=0.40) or family income > 4 minimum wages (or=0.49) were less likely to experience caries. those with gingivitis (or=1.87) were more prone to have the disease. considering the diagnostic threshold including il, the multiple logistic regression analyses showed that children with fluorosis (or=0.39) or family income > 4 minimum wages (or=0.52) were less likely to have caries. those with gingivitis (or=1.80), crowding (or=2.63 e or=1.01) or mouth breathing (or=1.37) were more likely to have the disease. conclusion: the preschool children who presented gingivitis, crowding, mouth breathing or monthly family income < 4 minimum wages were more likely to experience caries. in this way, planning preventive and operative actions targeted at these children would be essential for caries control.
Acute Effects of Nicotine Amplify Accumbal Neural Responses during Nicotine-Taking Behavior and Nicotine-Paired Environmental Cues

PLOS ONE , 2011, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0024049
Abstract: Nicotine self-administration (SA) is maintained by several variables, including the reinforcing properties of nicotine-paired cues and the nicotine-induced amplification of those cue properties. The nucleus accumbens (NAc) is implicated in mediating the influence of these variables, though the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms are not yet understood. In the present study, Long-Evans rats were trained to self-administer nicotine. During SA sessions each press of a lever was followed by an intravenous infusion of nicotine (30 μg/kg) paired with a combined light-tone cue. Extracellular recordings of single-neuron activity showed that 20% of neurons exhibited a phasic change in firing during the nicotine-directed operant, the light-tone cue, or both. The phasic change in firing for 98% of neurons was an increase. Sixty-two percent of NAc neurons additionally or alternatively showed a sustained decrease in average firing during the SA session relative to a presession baseline period. These session decreases in firing were significantly less prevalent in a group of neurons that were activated during either the operant or the cue than in a group of neurons that were nonresponsive during those events (referred to as task-activated and task-nonactivated neurons, respectively). Moreover, the session decrease in firing was dose-dependent for only the task-nonactivated neurons. The data of the present investigation provide supportive correlational evidence for two hypotheses: (1) excitatory neurophysiological mechanisms mediate the NAc role in cue-maintenance of nicotine SA, and (2) a differential nicotine-induced inhibition of task-activated and task-nonactivated neurons mediates the NAc role in nicotine-induced amplification of cue effects on nicotine SA.

Abstract: The present study investigated the distribution profile of dental caries and its association with areas of social deprivation at the individual and contextual level. The cluster sample consisted of 1,002 12-year-old schoolchildren from Piracicaba, SP, Brazil. The DMFT Index was used for dental caries and the Care Index was used to determine access to dental services. On the individual level, variables were associated with a better oral status. On the contextual level, areas were not associated with oral status. However, maps enabled determining that the central districts have better social and oral conditions than the deprived outlying districts.

Abstract: Adaptive streaming addresses the increasing and heterogenous demand of multimedia content over the Internet by offering several encoded versions for each video sequence. Each version (or representation) has a different resolution and bit rate, aimed at a specific set of users, like TV or mobile phone clients. While most existing works on adaptive streaming deal with effective playout-control strategies at the client side, we take in this paper a providers' perspective and propose solutions to improve user satisfaction by optimizing the encoding rates of the video sequences. We formulate an integer linear program that maximizes users' average satisfaction, taking into account the network dynamics, the video content information, and the user population characteristics. The solution of the optimization is a set of encoding parameters that permit to create different streams to robustly satisfy users' requests over time. We simulate multiple adaptive streaming sessions characterized by realistic network connections models, where the proposed solution outperforms commonly used vendor recommendations, in terms of user satisfaction but also in terms of fairness and outage probability. The simulation results further show that video content information as well as network constraints and users' statistics play a crucial role in selecting proper encoding parameters to provide fairness a mong users and to reduce network resource usage. We finally propose a few practical guidelines that can be used to choose the encoding parameters based on the user base characteristics, the network capacity and the type of video content.

Hybrid Identities of Characters in Muslim women fiction post 9-11
Karine Ancellin
The article examines contemporary novels published in English by women of Muslim ancestry. The corpus is constituted of 15 narratives that came out in the seven years that followed 9/11. The research analyses in what way the characters portrayed are reinventing – hybrid – identities. The kaleidoscopic characters are flexible with an ever-changing liminal self invention in their loyalties and less definite in the assertion of who they are, just like the veil that takes on so many shapes and forms in each novel.
