Concurrent pulmonary Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection and active Hürthle cell thyroid carcinoma: is there a connection?  [PDF]
Kara M. Meinke Baehr, Whitney S. Goldner
Health (Health) , 2010, DOI: 10.4236/health.2010.25058
Abstract: We present two cases of pulmonary MAC infection in women with Hürthle cell thyroid carcinoma. Both cases were asymptomatic octogenarian women with active Hürthle cell thyroid carcinoma and prolonged periods of hypothyroidism prior to diagnosis of pulmonary MAC. Mycobacterium avium complex has never been reported in association with any type of thyroid cancer, specifically Hürthle cell carcinoma. A review of the literature and possible associations between the two are discussed in this article.
Further new species of the genus Dolichoctis Schmidt-G bel from New Guinea and surrounding islands (Insecta, Coleoptera, Carabidae, Lebiinae)
Baehr, M.
Animal Biodiversity and Conservation , 2003,
Abstract: Two new species of the carabid genus Dolichoctis Schmidt-G bel from New Guinea and New Ireland are described: D. glabripennis of the striata-group (sensu Baehr, 1999) of the nominate subgenus, from New Guinea, and D. novaeirlandiae of the subgenus Spinidolichoctis Baehr, from the island of New Ireland. In New Guinea, D. glabripennis replaces D. microdera Andrewes of the Greater Sunda Islands and Moluccas that apparently does not occur in New Guinea. D. novaeirlandiae is the first record of a Dolichoctis from this island and it is outstanding due to its very short, only dentate elytra apex.
Tasmanitachoides Erwin glabellus n. sp. from North Queensland, Australia, with a note on Tasmanitachoides lutus (Darlington) (Insecta, Coleoptera, Carabidae, Bembidiinae)
Baehr, M.
Animal Biodiversity and Conservation , 2001,
Abstract: A new species of the genus Tasmanitachoides Erwin from North Queensland is described: T. glabellus n. sp. The species belongs to the T. murrumbidgensis group of species that is characterized by its distinctly impressed clypeus, but it is distinguished from all related species by its glabrous body surface. It is the first Tasmanitachoides from northern Australia to be found in rainforest on high mountains and has thus probably preserved the original habits of the genus that are still characteristic for those species living in southern temperate regions of Australia. Tasmanitachoides lutus (Darlington) so far known from the type locality in southern New South Wales and from the holotype only, is now recorded from eastern Victoria.
New records of the genus Dolichoctis Schmidt-G bel from New Guinea and surrounding islands (Insecta, Coleoptera, Carabidae, Lebiinae)
M. Baehr
Arxius de Miscel-lània Zoològica , 2003,
Abstract: New records of species of the carabid genus Dolichoctis Schmidt-G bel from New Guinea and several surrounding islands are dealt with. Apart from two new species that were described in another recent paper (Baehr, 2003), records of the following species from New Guinea are annotated: D. aculeata Chaudoir, D. biak Baehr, D. dentata Darlington, D. laticollis Baehr, D. striata Schmidt-G bel, D. subquadrata Darlington, D. subrotunda Darlington, and D. suturalis Darlington. D. aculeata Chaudoir is also recorded for the first time from the island of New Britain. Additional material of D. spinipennis Chaudoir corroborates its status as a separate species, being particular for the Moluccas.
Ground state non-universality in the random field Ising model
P. M. Duxbury,J. H. Meinke
Physics , 2000, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevE.64.036112
Abstract: Two attractive and often used ideas, namely universality and the concept of a zero temperature fixed point, are violated in the infinite-range random-field Ising model. In the ground state we show that the exponents can depend continuously on the disorder and so are non-universal. However, we also show that at finite temperature the thermal order parameter exponent one half is restored so that temperature is a relevant variable. The broader implications of these results are discussed.
Random-field Ising model on complete graphs and trees
R. Dobrin,J. H. Meinke,P. M. Duxbury
Physics , 2002, DOI: 10.1088/0305-4470/35/19/101
Abstract: We present exact results for the critical behavior of the RFIM on complete graphs and trees, both at equilibrium and away from equilibrium, i.e., models for hysteresis and Barkhausen noise. We show that for stretched exponential and power law distributions of random fields the behavior on complete graphs is non-universal, while the behavior on Cayley trees is universal even in the limit of large co-ordination.
Complications Associated with Insertion of Intrauterine Pressure Catheters: An Unusual Case of Uterine Hypertonicity and Uterine Perforation Resulting in Fetal Distress after Insertion of an Intrauterine Pressure Catheter
Kara M. Rood
Case Reports in Obstetrics and Gynecology , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/517461
Abstract: Insertion of intrauterine pressure catheters is a routine procedure performed in labor and delivery departments, with few associated complications. There are several reports of maternal and neonatal morbidity associated with the use of intrauterine pressure catheters and their rare adverse outcomes. We report an unusual case of uterine hypertonicity resulting in fetal distress, immediately after the placement of an intrauterine pressure catheter. An emergent Cesarean section was performed for fetal distress and revealed a 5 cm vertical rent in the posterior lower uterine segment. The uterine perforation was repaired intraoperatively. Mother and infant did well and were discharged home on postoperative day four.

URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs0602439 The task of collecting and reporting qualitative data can be an overwhelming one. Fieldworkers are required to sift through numerous methodological, ethical and personal issues as they progress through the various stages of their research. Since qualitative research is the intimate study of humans, there is no dependable way to predict its course and no prescriptive manual to guide the fieldworker through it. It is an enterprise suited only to those individuals able to negotiate the many pitfalls and perils. Harry F. WOLCOTT's The Art of Fieldwork presents a thorough and captivating discussion of the issues surrounding ethnographic fieldwork, with particular focus on the many contradictory facets of the science. It is an excellent resource for both experienced and new fieldwork researchers. The following review synopsizes a selection of his ideas, extends some of them, and explores their broader applicability. Abstract: Dieser Beitrag versteht sich als Erwiderung der Besprechung von Wolff-Michael ROTH zu Harry F. WOLCOTTs Sneaky Kid and Its Aftermath, ein Buch, das sich auf Ereignisse bezieht, die durch ein früheres Buch WOLCOTTs – Adequate Schools and Inadequate Education; The Life History of a Sneaky Kid – ausgel st wurden. URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs050364 This article is written in response to Wolff-Michael ROTH's review of Harry F. WOLCOTT's Sneaky Kid and Its Aftermath, which offers an account of events initiated by an earlier work by WOLCOTT—"Adequate Schools and Inadequate Education; The Life History of a Sneaky Kid." Originally designed to examine the distinctions between schooling and education, the study later became a catalyst for discussion on every aspect of qualitative research. This article examines some of the reviews of the book, focusing on three key ethical issues (power, intimacy, and discretion), followed by a closer look at ROTH's review in particular. Finally, a brief alternative review is presented.
