High Lipid Induction in Microalgae for Biodiesel Production

Abstract: Oil-accumulating microalgae have the potential to enable large-scale biodiesel production without competing for arable land or biodiverse natural landscapes. High lipid productivity of dominant, fast-growing algae is a major prerequisite for commercial production of microalgal oil-derived biodiesel. However, under optimal growth conditions, large amounts of algal biomass are produced, but with relatively low lipid contents, while species with high lipid contents are typically slow growing. Major advances in this area can be made through the induction of lipid biosynthesis, e.g., by environmental stresses. Lipids, in the form of triacylglycerides typically provide a storage function in the cell that enables microalgae to endure adverse environmental conditions. Essentially algal biomass and triacylglycerides compete for photosynthetic assimilate and a reprogramming of physiological pathways is required to stimulate lipid biosynthesis. There has been a wide range of studies carried out to identify and develop efficient lipid induction techniques in microalgae such as nutrients stress (e.g., nitrogen and/or phosphorus starvation), osmotic stress, radiation, pH, temperature, heavy metals and other chemicals. In addition, several genetic strategies for increased triacylglycerides production and inducibility are currently being developed. In this review, we discuss the potential of lipid induction techniques in microalgae and also their application at commercial scale for the production of biodiesel.
Plasmodium Riboprotein PfP0 Induces a Deviant Humoral Immune Response in Balb/c Mice

Abstract: Passive immunization with antibodies to recombinant Plasmodium falciparum P0 riboprotein (rPfP0, 61–316 amino acids) provides protection against malaria. Carboxy-terminal 16 amino acids of the protein (PfP0C0) are conserved and show 69% identity to human and mouse P0. Antibodies to this domain are found in 10–15% of systemic lupus erythematosus patients. We probed the nature of humoral response to PfP0C0 by repeatedly immunizing mice with rPfP0. We failed to raise stable anti-PfP0C0 hybridomas from any of the 21 mice. The average serum anti-PfP0C0 titer remained low (5.1±1.3×104). Pathological changes were observed in the mice after seven boosts. Adsorption with dinitrophenyl hapten revealed that the anti-PfP0C0 response was largely polyreactive. This polyreactivity was distributed across all isotypes. Similar polyreactive responses to PfP0 and PfP0C0 were observed in sera from malaria patients. Our data suggests that PfP0 induces a deviant humoral response, and this may contribute to immune evasion mechanisms of the parasite.
Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis of Antimalarial Drugs and their Metabolites in Body Fluids

Abstract: This review of methods for determining antimalarial drugs in biological fluids has focused on the various analytical techniques for the assay of chloroquine, quinine, amodiaquine, mefloquine, proguanil, pyrimethamine, sulphadoxine, primaquine and some of their metabolites. The methods for determining antimalarial and their metabolites in biological samples have changed rapidly during the last eight to ten years with the increased use of chromatographic techniques. Chloroquine is still the most used antimalarial drug, and various methods of different complexity exist for the determination of chloroquine and its metabolites in biological fluids. The pharmacokinetics of chloroquine and other antimalarial have been updated using these new methods. The various analytical techniques have been discussed, from simple colorimetric methods of intermediate selectivity and sensitivity to highly sophisticated, selective and sensitive chromatographic methods applied in a modern analytical laboratory.
Anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity of Balanites aegyptiaca in experimental animal models

Abstract: The anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect of ethanolic and petroleum ether extracts of Balanites aegyptiaca were evaluated in experimental animals. We have determined the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity of ethanolic and petroleum ether extracts of dried aerial parts of Balanites aegyptiaca by oral administration at doses of 300 and 600 mg/kg/day of body weight to healthy animals. The extracts were studied for their anti-inflammatory activity in carrageenan-induced hind paw edema in rats and the paw volume was measured plethysmometrically at 0 and 3h after injection. The ethanolic and petroleum ether extracts were also evaluated for analgesic activity using Eddy′s hot plate method and tail-flick method in albino rats. The ethanolic and petroleum ether extracts of Balanites aegyptiaca, significantly (P< 0.05) reduced carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats and analgesic activity evidenced by increase in the reaction time by Eddy′s hot plate method and tail-flick method in albino mice. The ethanolic and petroleum ether extracts showed a greater anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect comparative to the standard drugs, indomethacin and diclofenac sodium respectively. The present results indicated the ethanolic extract of Balanites aegyptiaca exhibited more significant activity than petroleum ether in the treatment of pain and inflammation.

Abstract: A large variety of foreign bodies are swallowed by children, but the majority of those pass through the gastrointestinal tract without any adverse effects. The highest incidence of swallowed foreign bodies occurs in children between 6 months and 3 years. We reported to you an unusually large foreign body ingested by a 2-year-old male patient who underwent a rigid oesophagoscopy but the foreign body had to be removed by open surgical technique. It is advisable to have a multidisciplinary approach while dealing with such cases.
A randomized, controlled clinical trial comparing efficacy, safety and cost effectiveness of Lornoxicam with Diclofenac Sodium in patients of osteoarthritis knee

Abstract: Osteoarthritis is a chronic painful condition affecting larger joints; most commonly knee joint. Pharmacological control of pain is the mainstay of management of osteoarthritis. Many patientsfail to achieve satisfactory reduction in pain with one of the most commonly prescribed drugs, diclofenac sodium, even after maximum daily allowed doses. Lornoxicam is a newer molecule in the Indian market promising better pain relief in context of low back pain and post knee replacement surgery pain as compared to standard therapies. As per profile of lornoxicam, if it is better than diclofenac sodium then it will be helpful in managing the patients of osteoarthritis more effectively. Till date no comparative clinical trial has been done to compare these two drugs for the management of osteoarthritis knee. So, to evaluate the same we carried out this study to compare safety, efficacy and cost effectiveness of lornoxicam and diclofenac sodium in relieving pain in patients of osteoarthritis knee. This study is a randomized, open labeled, controlled clinical trial having 40 newly diagnosed patients with osteoarthritis knee. After random allocation into two groups i.e. group D and group L (each having 20 patients); group D received diclofenac sodium 50 mg 12 hourly and group L received lornoxicam 4 mg 8 hourly for a period of 3 months. All patients were assessed with visual analogue scale and 100 meter walking test before starting of therapy, at 15 days and at 1, 2 and 3 months of therapy. Adverse drug reactions and cost of therapy was monitored during the study period. Mean decrease in visual analogue scale and time of 100 meter walking test was statistically significant in lornoxicam group as compared to diclofenac sodium. Gastric irritation was reported in one patient from group L and two patients from group D. Lornoxicam significantly relieves pain of osteoarthritis knee than diclofenac sodium without adversely affecting the tolerability to the patients.

Obtaining Optimal Solution by Using Very Good Non-Basic Feasible Solution of the Transportation and Linear Programming Problem  [PDF]

Abstract: For the transportation problem, Sharma and Sharma [1] have given a very computationally efficient heuristic (runs in O(c*n2) time) to give very good dual solution to transportation problem. Sharma and Prasad [2] have given an efficient heuristic (complexity O(n3) procedure to give a very good primal solution (that is generally non-basic feasible solution) to transportation problem by using the very good dual solution given by Sharma and Sharma [2]. In this paper we use the solution given by Sharma and Prasad [2] to get a very good Basic Feasible Solution to transportation problem, so that network simplex (worst case complexity (O(n3*(log(n))) can be used to reach the optimal solution to transportation problem. In the second part of this paper, we give a simple heuristic procedure to get a very good BFS to linear programming problem from the solution given by Karmarkar [3] (that generally produces a very good non-basic feasible solution in polynomial time (O(n5.5)). We give a procedure to obtain a good BFS for LP by starting from the solution given by Karmarkar [3]. We note that this procedure (given here) is significantly different from the procedure given in [4].

Abstract: Lattice parameter and corresponding total free energy have been computed for cubic SrMO3 perovskites (M = Ti, Zr, Mo, Rh, Ru) using the first principle approach within Density functional theory. The results have been calculated using local density approximation (LDA) method. It is found that the calculated lattice parameter for all transition metal oxides are in good agreement with the available experimental data. The total free energy corresponding to this lattice constant has been calculated along with different components of the total free energy. All these calculations have been carried out using ABINIT computer code.

Abstract: The impact of p-ratio i.e. ratio of carrier power to total received RF power at control office (CO) on Bit error rate (BER), Q- performance parameter and Optical signal noise ratio (OSNR) of RoF communication system is theoretically analyzed using angular full-linewidth at half maximum (FWHM) of Lorentzian shape for the RF oscillator in this paper. As reduction in Laser linewidth improves the performance of RoF system, the RF oscillator linewidth at FWHM also plays an important role in improving the performance of RoF system.
