Sirtuins: from metabolic regulation to brain aging

Abstract: Brain aging is characterized by progressive loss of neurophysiological functions that is often accompanied by age-associated neurodegeneration. Calorie restriction has been linked to extension of lifespan and reduction of the risk of neurodegenerative diseases in experimental model systems. Several signaling pathways have been indicated to underlie the beneficial effects of calorie restriction, among which the sirtuin family has been suggested to play a central role. In mammals, it has been established that sirtuins regulate physiological responses to metabolism and stress, two key factors that affect the process of aging. Sirtuins represent a promising new class of conserved deacetylases that play an important role in regulating metabolism and aging. This review focuses on current understanding of the relation between metabolic pathways involving sirtuins and the brain aging process, with focus on SIRT1 and SIRT3. Identification of therapeutic agents capable of modulating the expression and/or activity of sirtuins is expected to provide promising strategies for ameliorating neurodegeneration. Future investigations regarding the concerted interplay of the different sirtuins will help us understand more about the aging process, and potentially lead to the development of therapeutic approaches for the treatment of age-related neurodegenerative diseases and promotion of successful aging.
Heavy metal pollution in soils and characteristics of heavy metal accumulation of dominant plants in antimony mining area

Abstract: 通过野外调查采样,分析了冷水江锑矿区4个采样点土壤和优势植物中重金属含量,以及矿区生长的5种优势植物对Sb、As、Cd、Pb、Cu和Zn的的吸收与富集能力及其富集特性。结果表明,矿区土壤中6种重金属元素的平均含量均超出湖南省土壤背景值和全国土壤背景值,土壤受Sb污染最严重,其次是Cd、As的污染。5种优势植物淡竹叶、苎麻、芒草、狗尾草和白背叶体内Sb、As的含量都超过正常范围,具有修复矿区土壤Sb、As污染的潜力。其中苎麻对Sb的富集系数和转运系数均大于1,满足Sb超富集植物的基本特征,可作为生态恢复的先锋植物;芒草对Cd的富集系数和转运系数都大于1,对重金属有较强的耐性,作为重金属污染的修复植物具有较好的应用前景。
Growth responses and phytoremediation potential of Artemisia selengensis to Cd stress

Abstract: Artemisia selengensis grown in Dongting Lake wetland was recently found as a plant with good capacity in enriching Cd. A pot experiment was conducted to study the biological traits and the Cd accumulation characteristics of Artemisia selengensis to Cd stress during its growth period. The final results showed that the leaves were injured apparently in response to significant decrease of above-ground biomass when Cd concentrations in soil were higher than 40 mg·kg-1. Artemisia selengensis could complete its life cycle at a high Cd concentration (100 mg·kg-1) and showed strong resistence to soil Cd. The bioavailable Cd accounted for 15.3%~37.1% of total soil Cd. There were no significant differences of Cd concentrations in the plants during their different growth phases, but a lower Cd accumulation was observed in stems and leaves at the seedling stage than the other stages because of low biomass. During the adult stage of Artemisia selengensis, Cd accumulation was up to 492~588 mg·kg-1 under the Cd treatment of 40~60 mg·kg-1. These data suggested that Artemisia selengensis was an outstanding species that could be selected as a potential candidate to repair Cd pollution from lake soil.

In this paper, we analyze the effect on the ball-bat model of corking the bat, and investigate the relationship between the sweet spot and different materials. First and foremost, we develop a simple but effective theoretical model to give a rough estimate for the sweet spot of the bat. Second, we give a simplified abstract form of bat which facilitates the description and modeling study. Last but not least, according to different material caused rotary inertia and different recovery coefficient, researches on the different material hitting effect were made.

Abstract: Based on the entropy weight method and the gray relational analysis method, we first calculate the weight of each index and the correlation coefficient between the indicators, get the urban intelligent growth index, and then calculate the annual growth rate of the composite index. We find the following results. First, Suzhou to improve its environment, the success rate of 109.67%. Saint Louis to improve its economy, the growth rate of 57.4%. Second, the sensitivity of the data analysis, each of the indicators is increased by 10%, 20%, 30%, other indicators remain unchanged. Recalculate the city’s intelligent growth index, we find that the greater the volatility, the greater the potential. The total population of the city, built green area, the total length of the bus operating a greater potential, built-up area, the smallest regional GDP potential. Finally, we propose an improved model combining remote sensing with GIS to analyze urban expansion and farmland loss from time and space qualitatively and quantitatively.

Abstract: Based on the idea of infinitesimal analysis, we establish the basic model of relation between speed and flow. Since putting a certain amount of self-driving car will affect the average speed of mixed traffic flow, we choose the proportion of self-driving car to be a variable, denoted by k. Based on the least square method, we find two critical values of k that are 38.63% and 68.26%. When k < 38.63%, the self-driving cars have a negative influence to the traffic. When 38.63% < k < 68.26%, they have a positive influence to the traffic. When k > 68.26%, they have significant improvement to the traffic capacity of the road.

Abstract: This essay will enquire whether Turkey and Greece could remove their enduring controversies through confidence building measures, mediation and inter-governmental dialogues which were introduced in the post-1999 détente period. The paper will specifically focus on the recent nature of understanding between the two countries and will endeavour to answer the question of whether there is a divergence in the nature of recent cooperative arrangements from those which were concluded in the former periods of détente and each of which were disrupted by succeeding periods of either armed conflict or cold war. The paper contends that the recent nature of Greek-Turkish relations is not problem-free. Yet, the new cooperative environment facilitated by confidence building measures and growing mutual understanding could help resolve the disputes and dispel reservations in the Aegean and Cyprus which have been very central to national security considerations of both Turkey and Greece. From a security perspective, continuation of previous policies towards one another is counterproductive in the post-1999 period. Improvement of a bilateral dialogue under the EU umbrella is detrimental for the defence considerations of both Turkey and Greece.
An accurate solution of point kinetics equations of one-group delayed neutrons and an extraneous neutron source for step reactivity insertion

Abstract: The continuous indication of the neutron density and its rate of change are important for the safe startup and operation of reactors. The best way to achieve this is to obtain analytical solutions of the neutron kinetics equations because none of the developed numerical methods can well satisfy the need for real-time or even super-time computation for the safe startup and operation of reactors in practice. In this paper, an accurate analytical solution of point kinetics equations with one-group delayed neutrons and an extraneous neutron source is proposed to calculate the change in neutron density, where the whole process from the subcritical stage to critical and supercritical stages is considered for step reactivity insertions. The accurate analytical solution can also be used as a benchmark of all numerical methods employed to solve stiff neutron kinetics equations.
