Abstract: The development of a unified numerical framework based on the boundary element method(BEM) for modeling crack propagation behavior in anisotropic rock is presented. The BEM formulation combined with the maximum circumferential stress criterion is used to predict the crack initiation angles and to simulate the crack propagation paths. To demonstrate the proposed BEM procedure to predict crack propagation in anisotropic rock, the propagation path in cracked straight-through Brazilian disc(CSTBD) specimen is numerically predicted and compared with the actual laboratory observations. Good agreement is found between the two approaches. It is therefore concluded that the proposed BEM procedure can accurately simulate the process of crack propagation for anisotropic rock.
Transaction Cost, Specialization and Division of Labor
—A General Equilibrium Analysis of Entrepreneurship under Globalization
 [PDF]

Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2014.41006
Abstract:

This paper develops a Walrasian general equilibrium model based on transaction cost and specialization to investigate the evolution and role of entrepreneurship in a competitive market under globalization. The implication of our model is straightforward that if the entrepreneurship in a competitive market under globalization is efficient, it will ensure the network and effects of division of labor can be fully exploited when the gains from the division of labor outweigh the costs of exchange between individuals of different specialization patterns with the different fixed learning costs. Hence, the entrepreneurship service in a competitive market under globalization can promote aggregate productivity by enlarging the scope for trading off network effects of the division of labor on aggregate productivity against transaction costs. To business practitioners, this model suggests that the entrepreneurship service is a key element of business viability during which a major transition took place in human activity. Besides, the improvement of the level of globalization and the general transaction efficiency coefficient will increase the level of division of labor and the per capita real income level of participants.

Modern Economy (ME) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/me.2013.412090
Abstract:

Many urban communities in the United States faced deteriorating physical infrastructure and social environment in the second half of the 20th century. To restore such inner city neighborhoods, many neighborhoods have adopted historic preservation as a means to both aesthetically and fiscally improve the condition. This paper studies a historic district in the Tree Streets neighborhood, Johnson City, Tennessee in regard to its road toward historical preservation and neighborhood restoration. We find that through decades of a local civic organization’s efforts and government planning initiatives, the community has successfully turned from a university slum into a livable neighborhood. We also find that the benefits are not strictly nostalgic but there is a positive economic impact of historic preservation designation on property values. The making of the historic district in the Tree Streets neighborhood both socially and economically has provided a great example of smart growth for Johnson city and other American cities to revitalize urban residential neighborhoods in central cities.

The Effects of Parents’ Job Insecurity on the Subjective Well-Being of Adolescents  [PDF]

Open Journal of Business and Management (OJBM) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/ojbm.2018.62020
Abstract:
Administering Teenagers perceived Parents’ Job Insecurity Questionnaires and Subject Well-Being Questionnaires to the sample consisting of 281 teenagers, the paper is to explore the characteristics of teenagers’ perceived parents’ job insecurity and its effects on subject well-being. The results showed that: As the average score of the students in the high school and the university were both higher than the overall average, the one of the middle school students was lower. Additionally, the perceived qualitative job insecurity of fathers of the teenagers in the university was significantly higher than that of the high school and the middle school. Also, qualitative job insecurity of fathers was significant positive predictor of teenagers’ negative emotion, however, job insecurity of mothers showed no significance to teenagers’ emotion. Thus, there are two main conclusions: teenagers in the university worry about parents’ loss of jobs more often than others in the middle and high school. Secondly, it is the qualitative job insecurity of father that causes negative effects to teenagers’ subjective well-being while the effects from the job insecurity of mother is not obvious. The combination of job insecurity and subject well-being of teenagers is effective for human resource management and teenagers’ mental health.

Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2018.65011
Abstract: Our grassroots society exists some problems that it is hard to adapt new situation of interest entity diversification, prominent contradiction, governance system and modes, whose reasons lie in insufficient participation of residents and incomplete formation of society multi-governance to some large extent. With the analysis of “Wuzhen housekeeper” modes, we find that the modes of “Wuzhen housekeeper” realize the upgrade from “single rules and regulation” to “participation in the entire process” to ensure that the public can be got full participation. The practice shows that “internet+ social governance” is not only a direct and shortcut platform of participation in supervision, but also an important path to innovate grassroots social governance. In the process of grassroots social governance in future, “internet+ social governance” urgently needs to consummate channel of participation and incentive mechanism, pay more attention to change government ideas to expect to build new modes of grassroots social governance among society, resident and government and improve the levels of grassroots social governance.

Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological Sciences and Applications (JCDSA) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/jcdsa.2018.82008
Abstract: Background: The majority of studies published on rheology of hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers have focused on results from frequency sweeps within the linear viscoelastic region (LVR), i.e. at nearly static conditions. To study the properties and behavior of HA fillers at more dynamic conditions, it is necessary to go outside the LVR. Objective: Evaluation of the G’/G’’ cross-over point from the amplitude sweep is suggested as a manner to estimate the flexibility of HA fillers. Materials and methods: Rheological properties of 7 HA fillers were measured in an amplitude sweep from 0.1% to 10000% strain at 1 Hz, using an Anton Paar MCR 301, a PP-25 measuring system with a gap of 1 mm at 25 and a 30-min relaxation time. The cross-over point was evaluated for stress, strain and G (G’ and G’’ identical), the values denoted xStrain, xStress and xG. Results: The xStrain values spanned from below 1000% to above 2000% for the products based on the Optimal Balance Technology (OBT)? (in the US, XpresHAn Technology

Modern Economy (ME) , 2019, DOI: 10.4236/me.2019.101008
Abstract:

After the outbreak of the financial crisis, the problem of non-performing loans in the banking sector represented by European countries continued to attract attention. As the impact of the crisis weakened, the non-performing loan ratio declined, but it still faced severe challenges. The problem of non-performing loan ratio has improved in the context of the deepening of financial sector reform in China’s banking industry. However, in recent years, data show that non-performing loan ratios of commercial banks have increased. This paper focuses on the non-performing loans of commercial banks in Europe and China. By analyzing the influencing factors of non-performing loans of commercial banks, this paper analyzes the management problems of Chinese and foreign commercial banks and proposes policy recommendations.

A Real-Time Urban Traffic Detection Algorithm Based on Spatio-Temporal OD Matrix in Vehicular Sensor Network  [PDF]
Ke Zhang, Guangtao Xue
Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) , 2010, DOI: 10.4236/wsn.2010.29080
Abstract: Currently, there are kinds of algorithms in order to detect real-time urban traffic condition. Most of these approaches consider speed of vehicles as a main metric to describe traffic situation. In this paper, we find out two important observations through several experiments. (1) In urban city, the speed of vehicles is influenced significantly by some factors such as traffic lights delay and road condition. The actual situation rarely satisfy hypothesis required for these solutions. Therefore, these traditional algorithms do not work well in practical environment. (2) Traffic volume on a road segment shows strong pattern and changes smoothly at adjacent time. This feature of traffic volume inspires us to define a metric: traffic-rate, which is used to detect traffic condition in real time. In our solution, we develop a novel traffic-detection algorithm based on original- destination (OD) matrix. We illustrate our approach and measure its performance in real environment. The performance evaluations confirm the effectiveness of our algorithm.
